DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Lawsuit Settled; Movie Moving Forward

Dungeons-and-Dragons-Tyranny-Dragonlord.jpg

Nearly a year after a six-day trial was held on the past and future of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, Warner Bros., Hasbro and Sweetpea Entertainment have worked out a deal that will usher in a new film and avoid a judge's intervention. An announcement was made after parties filed papers in California federal court dismissing a lawsuit with prejudice.

The upcoming Warner Bros motion picture will be based on a script by David Leslie Johnson (Wrath of the Titans) and produced by Roy Lee (The Lego Movie, How To Train Your Dragon) with the involvement of Hasbro chief executive Brian Goldner and chief content officer Stephen Davis. It will take place in the popular D&D campaign setting of the Forgotten Realms.

"We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen," said Greg Silverman, president of creative development and worldwide production at Warner Bros. Pictures. "This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property."

"This is such an enormous opportunity to bring the rich fantasy setting of the Forgotten Realms to life and, together with the creative powerhouse of Warner Bros., use movies to tell the stories that have enchanted passionate D&D fans for decades," said Stephen Davis, Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer of Hasbro, Inc. "D&D is the role-playing game that started it all and now we have the opportunity to ignite a franchise for its legions of avid fans in a way never done before."

First Red-Band Trailer for DEADPOOL Officially Released

Deadpool-EW-080415-Dragonlord.jpg

The first Deadpool red band trailer is officially here, thanks to Fox and Conan. The first footage from the film debuted a few weeks ago at Comic Con and was quickly bootlegged, but following a brief trailer tease that went online yesterday, this is the real thing. Hit the jump to take in all the foul-mouthed and blood-spattered action from Marvel’s Merc With a Mouth as played by Ryan Reynolds and brought to the screen by director Tim Miller.

This is pretty much exactly what we saw at Comic-Con, but with a few edits made here and there, including cutting out Stan Lee’s great cameo, which is absolutely hilarious. They also took out a great exchange between Deadpool and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). But even with some cuts here and there, this looks like exactly the kind of Deadpool movie fans have wanted since he was ruined in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

From the action to Deadpool mouthing off at every turn, this looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun. And you can bet there’s at least a dozen more takes of T.J. Miller telling Wade Wilson what his disfigured face looks like. Deadpool opens on February 12th, 2016, with a cast that includes Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, T.J. Miller, Gina Carano, and Brianna Hildebrand.

BAD BOYS 3 and 4 Get a 2017 and 2019 Release Dates

Bad-Boys-2-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony Pictures has set a slew of release dates for a number of promising upcoming projects, most notably two Bad Boys sequels. After years of no commitments from Michael Bay, it was learned last month that Narc and The Grey director Joe Carnahan was in talks to write and possibly direct Bad Boys 3.

It appears Carnahan may have cracked the story for two sequels at once, as Sony has dated Bad Boys 3 for February 2017 and Bad Boys 4 for July 2019. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are expected to return.

Other notable dates: The Dark Tower may finally be getting off the ground with director Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) at the helm, as Sony has slated that picture for release on January 13, 2017. And Edgar Wright’s next movie, Baby Driver starring Ansel Elgort, gets a solid March 17, 2017 release date. Sony has also slated Resident Evil 6—the final installment of the franchise—for 2017, and Underworld 5 will drop in October 2016.

3rd Trailer for HITMAN: AGENT 47 Starring Rupert Friend

2alq39.jpg

What makes the assassin at the heart of video game adaptation Hitman: Agent 47 worthy of his own movie? The final trailer for the feature explains all — literally. "He's a genetically engineered human being," says Zachary Quinto as the preview begins, talking to Hannah Ware. "Stronger, faster, more intelligent than normal people. His name is 47. He's here to kill you."

Of course, that's not the full story — while Agent 47 (Rupert Friend, complete with a bar code on his neck to identify his artificial status) is, indeed, a genetically engineered superman, he's not out to kill Ware's character at all. Instead, he's trying to rescue her from Quinto's clutches because she's also a genetically engineered agent. Quinto, it turns out, is looking to unlock the secrets within Friend and Ware's manipulated DNA in order to add to his own skills, which are previewed in the clip. As Quinto says midway through, "Pretty crazy, huh?"

The movie is based on the Danish Hitman video game series and also stars Ciaran Hinds and Thomas Kretschmann. Directed by Aleksander Bach from a script by Michael Finch and A Good Day to Die Hard's Skip Woods, the film opens Aug. 21.

ABOUT RAY Trailer Stars Elle Fanning as a Transgender Teen

About-Ray-Fanning-Watts-Sarandon-Dragonlord.jpg

The Weinstein Company has released a new trailer for About Ray (formerly Three Generations) a family drama starring Elle Fanning as Ray, a teenager who realizes he was born in the body of the wrong gender and makes the decision to transition from female to male. The film also stars Naomi Watts as Ray’s supportive single mother, Susan Sarandon as Ray’s baffled grandmother, and Tate Donovan as his estranged father.

There concept is rife with potential for domestic drama, as three generations struggle with their sense of identity in the confines of a single home. The premise is intriguing, and certainly en vogue given how transgender issues have shot into the spotlight over the last couple years thanks to progressive programming like Orange is the New Black and Transparent, and of course due to Caitlyn Jenner's public transition.

First BY THE SEA Trailer Starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

BySea-Bandeau.jpg

The world’s most famous celebrity couple is back on the big screen together — and it doesn’t look like their characters are having that great of a time. The morose first trailer for By the Sea introduces us to Roland (Brad Pitt) and Vanessa (Angelina Jolie Pitt, billed for the first time with her husband’s surname), an American couple sulking through a vacation at a picturesque French resort in the 1970s.

Set to the ironic soundtrack of Harry Nilsson’s “Perfect Day,” there’s very little dialogue, but there is a lot of high melodrama — and enough smoking to make you cough. In other words, it all feels appropriately European.

By the Sea comes 10 years after Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the hit romantic thriller that lead to the stars’ coupling, and the only previous project on which they’ve collaborated. It’s the third film directed by Jolie Pitt, who also wrote the screenplay, after the acclaimed but little-seen In the Land of Blood and Honey (2011) and last year’s WWII epic Unbroken. Jolie Pitt has said she’ll likely move away entirely from acting in the coming years to focus more on filmmaking.

Samuel L. Jackson in Talks to Join KONG: SKULL ISLAND

Samuel-Jackson-Kong-Skull-Island-Dragonlord.jpg

While Legendary Pictures has been rounding out the cast for Kong: Skull Island–they recently added Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston and one of the standout young actors from Straight Outta Compton in Corey Hawkins, they still need to replace the male leads after Michael Keaton and JK Simmons exited.

Deadline is reporting that Legendary is in early talks with Samuel L. Jackson to bring his fire to the role that Simmons vacated. They have a small list of actors to play the one Keaton exited due to scheduling, with John C. Reilly atop it, though no offer has yet been made. Tom Wilkinson has also just been offered a lead role in the picture.

Jackson isn’t locked yet, but the actor has shown a liking for being part of blockbuster fare like the Star Wars and the Marvel superhero films. If he doesn’t have the greatest gross tally of any actor in film history, Skull Island sounds like the kind of film that could help get him there. Jackson will next be seen starring in Quentin Tarantino’s post-Civil War era The Hateful Eight, playing a bounty hunter with lines as lyrical as the ones in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

Legendary has Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing a script by John Gatins and Max Borenstein, and they are eyeing a production start of late year or early 2016. The film will be released by Universal Pictures on March 10, 2017, with a Imax 3D a big part of the release plan.
