WONDER Screenwriter Jack Thorne to Rewrite STAR WARS: EPISODE IX

wAcplIs.jpg

Star Wars: Episode IX is getting a rewrite. Jack Thorne, the British scribe who wrote the upcoming Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder, has been tapped to work on the Star Wars installment that is to be directed by Colin Trevorrow.

Trevorrow and his writing partner, Derek Connolly, have been working on the script, but sources say a fresh set of eyes was needed. It is unclear how extensive the rewrites will be.

Rian Johnson wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the eighth installment of the sci-fi fantasy that opens Dec. 15. That movie, currently in post, may also need script changes.

Force Awakens stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac are expected to return — but you never know who a Star Wars movie may kill off, so don’t get too comfortable — with the ninth installment eyeing a production start in January 2018.

The movie has a scheduled release date of May 24, 2019.

Thorne is the creator or co-creator of several British television shows, dramas and thrillers, including The Fades, The Cast-Offs, The Last Panthers and National Treasure.

While those don’t sound like the Star Wars wheelhouse, his writing on two more recent programs brings him closer: His Dark Materials, BBC’s adaptation of the fantasy by Philip Pullman, and Philip K. Dick’s Electric Sheep for Channel 4.

Dave Bautista in Talks to Star in Valiant's ETERNAL WARRIOR

MaEFBPc.jpg

After two film installments of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Dave Bautista looks like he might move into another comic book universe, with a tweet teasing a previously unknown project featuring a character from Valiant Entertainment.

Responding to a fan question, Bautista — who plays Drax in the Marvel Studios franchise, with his next appearance due in next year's Avengers: Infinity Warsaid that he was "really excited" about Valiant's Eternal Warrior, adding, "We are currently working to get the script fan-worthy, and then we'll be full on from there."

If that wasn't enough confirmation, Valiant's chief executive officer and chief creative officer Dinesh Shamdasani chimed in, offering a half-joking non-confirmation of what Bautista seemed to be hinting at.

"I can neither confirm nor deny that @DaveBautista just revealed a giant secret lol!"

Sources tell Heat Vision that any Eternal Warrior project would likely be related to the Archer & Armstrong movie currently being developed by Terry Rossio and director Ruben Fleischer. In Valiant's comic book mythology, the Eternal Warrior — aka Gilad Anni-Padda — is the brother of the "Armstrong" from the latter project; a third brother, Ivar Anni-Padda, features in the comic book series Timewalker.

The concept behind Eternal Warrior is a simple one: Resurrected using a mysterious artifact after a battlefield death millennia ago, Gilad has become functionally immortal with two unexpected side effects. Firstly, he can be killed — it's just that he will come back to life afterwards, no matter how painful a process that might be. Secondly, across the centuries, he falls into the service of the Earth itself, defending the Geomancer, a being chosen by the planet to act as its champion in times of need. Needless to say, neither being the Geomancer nor their defender is an entirely easy — or un-dangerous — proposition.

Details on Clashing Visions and Poor Test Screenings for THE DARK TOWER

Lz1CJvn.png

With millions of loyal readers and a fantastical setting, Stephen King’s The Dark Tower book series has tantalized Hollywood. The movie business is always on the prowl for the next Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. King’s novels, about a mysterious gunslinger on a quest to save the universe, had the markings of a potential blockbuster.

However, getting the promising adaptation to the big screen took more than a decade and suffered several setbacks along the way, as one top director and screenwriter after another — including J.J. Abrams, who originally optioned the material — tried and failed to wrest the author’s eight-book opus into a workable film. After Universal Pictures scrapped plans to make a series of interconnected films and television shows with Ron Howard running point, Modi Wiczyk, co-founder of Media Rights Capital, set the project up under a co-financing deal with Sony Pictures.

In 2015, MRC and Sony jointly announced they had found a way into the story and tapped Nikolaj Arcel, the Oscar-nominated Danish filmmaker behind A Royal Affair, to direct the movie.

vODX77x.jpg

With The Dark Tower poised to debut this weekend, multiple sources told Variety that the creative process — particularly in post-production — was plagued with problems and clashing visions. Wiczyk and Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman downplay any suggestion that the movie faced major hurdles.

But when Arcel delivered an early cut of the picture that alarmed Wiczyk and Rothman, they considered bringing in a more experienced filmmaker to recut it. While the two men deny this and insist their joint contribution was limited to giving the director notes, one insider said that Rothman spent hours in the editing bay offering his input.

Arcel seemed the ideal director on paper — A Royal Affair had earned an Oscar nomination and proved he could handle lavish spectacle, while his screenwriting work on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo demonstrated he could adapt beloved novels. Also, he was a big fan of King’s, enlisting his books to improve his English.

Arcel, however, had never worked on this complicated a project, and he found himself in over his head on the $66 million fantasy film, say several sources.

ZdklYhD.png

Three blind screenings last October, shown before final effects work had been completed, confirmed fears that the picture was a mess. Audiences at the test screenings couldn’t understand the mythology and rated the film poorly. A classic tale of good and evil, The Dark Tower stars Idris Elba as the last Gunslinger, who is locked in an eternal battle with a sorcerer known as the Man in Black, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey.

Sources say the companies ultimately opted not to enlist another filmmaker (one explained it would have been too costly), but the executives from the studios remained heavily involved. Ron Howard, a Dark Tower producer, who had hoped to direct the film when it was set up at Universal, advised Arcel on the music, and co-writer and producer Akiva Goldsman helped wrangle the film into shape.

Arcel insists he wasn’t sidelined. “On a film with two studios and powerful producers, obviously there is much passionate creative debate on how to work certain ideas or beats,” he said. “But I felt supported throughout, and they all looked to me for answers. If someone had jumped into my editing room and taken over — I would have left instantly.”

oR30XET.jpg

Rothman and Wiczyk say they were impressed with Arcel’s work, with the Sony chief saying he “hopes to” collaborate with the director on future projects. Wiczyk also hit back at claims the film was troubled.

“We shot this on time and on budget,” he said. “We didn’t go over our schedule by even a day.” Calling his company “artist driven,” he added, “We would never marginalize or remove a director or dare to edit a film.”

Sources paint a more acrimonious picture of the production, one that was enabled by the unique nature of the deal that Sony struck with MRC — a pact that allowed competing power centers to emerge. The two companies split costs, and in return MRC was granted “kill rights” on everything from the marketing campaign to the final cut of the picture. If one company didn’t like a trailer or a cut of the film, it had to be scrapped, making it difficult to achieve consensus. It’s a rare type of partnership, with the kind of sign-off that few production companies enjoy. That led to a case of “too many cooks in the kitchen,” according to one insider. King also had a great deal of input. In return for the rights to his work, he retained veto approval of almost every aspect of the film.

Sony and MRC admit The Dark Tower defied easy translation. The books move forward and backward in time and reference multiple genres, from gangster films to Arthurian legends. It was a struggle to combine parts of several books into an 88-minute film that appeals to both King devotees and mainstream audiences.

khkk16U.png

Sony and MRC spent $6 million on reshoots to fill in more backstory about Elba’s character’s hatred for McConaughey’s Man in Black. In addition, to better familiarize audiences with Mid-World, the film’s magical setting, five minutes of exposition were cut and a new scene was shot to combine ideas that had been sprinkled throughout the picture.

Sony’s Rothman believes that the narrative complexity will ultimately help the film connect with audiences. “It’s a fantasy film and so yes, it’s complicated; it’s intricate and ambitious, but that’s a good thing because with the complexity of the stuff on television now, theater audiences want ambition,” he said.

On social media there’s been speculation about the quality of The Dark Tower given that the studio moved the picture premiere from February to July, only to push its release back by an additional week. Despite the mixed buzz, The Dark Tower is tracking to open in the mid-$20 million range. It also has the support of an important critic. In the novels, someone who acts dishonorably is said to have “forgotten the faces of his fathers.” After seeing the film, King sent Arcel an email praising him. “You have remembered the faces of your fathers,” he wrote.

Trailer for Angelina Jolie's FIRST THEY KILLED MY FATHER on Netflix

That trailer didn't do a ton for me but it's interesting to see Angelina Jolie transitioning from actor to director.

It seems that she's maybe gotten bored with acting or she realized she's no longer the draw she once was, I dunno. The last thing she starred in that I cared anything about was Salt, and that was seven years ago now.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was nominated for an Oscar for starring in 12 Years a Slave, is in talks to voice the role of Scar, the traitorous villain in Disney’s live-action re-imagining of its classic, The Lion King, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Jon Favreau, who directed the live-action remake of The Jungle Book, is sitting behind the camera for King, which already boasts a stellar voice cast of Donald Glover as Simba, the young lion who would be king and James Earl Jones as his father, Mufasa (Jones voiced the character in the 1994 original).

Also lending their pipes to the pride are Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and John Oliver. The new movie is currently shooting in Los Angeles.

PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING Release Pushed Back One Month

rxk31k8.png

The apocalypse is still being canceled, but just a little later than planned.

Universal has moved Pacific Rim: Uprising to a new release date of March 23, 2018. It previously was scheduled to open a month earlier on Feb. 23.

Uprising is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 film, which saw a group of Yaeger pilots played by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi use their giant robots to protect humanity from giant monsters (Kaiju).

In the new film, John Boyega plays the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba's character in the original). This time around, director Steven S. DeKnight is piloting the film.

No trailer has debuted yet, but last month during San Diego Comic-Con, Uprising released a short teaser that looks like a recruiting video for Yaeger pilots.

The film is a Universal/Legendary co-production.

March 2018 will be pretty busy in the blockbuster movie realm, with A Wrinkle in Time (March 9), Tomb Raider (March 16) and Ready Player One (March 30).

Alex Garland's Sci-Fi Thriller ANNIHILATION Gets Feb. 2018 Release Date

AnnihilationHeader.jpg

Paramount has set a February 23, 2018 release date for science-fiction thriller Annihilation, starring Natalie Portman.

The studio is placing the movie in the slot vacated by Legendary-Universal’s Pacific Rim Uprising.

The film, based on Jeff VanderMeer’s novel, is directed by Alex Garland from his own script. The story follows a biologist, played by Portman, who embarks on a four-person expedition into a territory cut off from civilization while searching for clues about her husband’s disappearance. While there, she must deal with a contamination, vanishing colleagues, a deadly animal, and a creature known as the Crawler.

Oscar Isaac plays Portman’s husband. Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Jennifer Jason Leigh portray the other members of the search party. Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich are the producers.

Garland received an Academy Award nomination in the best original screenplay category for 2014’s Ex Machina.

Annihilation will face competition from CBS Films’ horror entry Winchester, starring Helen Mirren as gun heiress Sarah Winchester dealing with a massive haunted house.

This comes after Universal and Legendary moved the sci-fi sequel Pacific Rim Uprising back a month to March 23. It was the fourth date given to the title, which was originally scheduled to open in 2017.

KARATE KID TV Sequel, Starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, a Go at YouTube Red

HDwKf1j.jpg

Three decades after The Karate Kid, original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are heading back to the dojo. The duo are set to reprise their roles as underdog Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and bully Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) in a 10-episode straight-to-series follow-up called Cobra Kai for subscription service YouTube Red.

The series, set to bow in 2018, is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and revolves around a down and out Johnny who, seeking redemption, reopens the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. It reignites his rivalry with a now-successful Daniel, who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). The half-hour comedy follows the duo addressing demons from their past and present frustrations — through (what else?) karate.

Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) as well as duo Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold and Kumar) will pen the script and exec produce alongside Macchio and Zabka. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will direct much of the series. Will Smith's Sony Pictures Television Studios-based Overbrook Entertainment will exec produce with James Lassiter and Caleeb Pinkett overseeing for the company.

Macchio and Zabka are expected to make an appearance Friday at YouTube's portion of the Television Critics Association's summer press tour in Beverly Hills.

"Like everyone who grew up in the 1980s, the three of us are enormous fans of The Karate Kid,” Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a joint statement. "Cobra Kai will be a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes. We can’t wait to reignite the LaRusso-Lawrence rivalry, and we’re thankful to our partners at YouTube Red, Sony Pictures Television and Overbrook for their shared enthusiasm in making our dream project a reality."

The series landed at YouTube Red following a competitive bidding process that sources say also included offers from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and AMC after Macchio and Zabka pitched the series all over town. Macchio appeared in all three original Karate Kid features, while Zabka had roles in the first two. "They were enthusiastic and fun," YouTube global head of originals Susanne Daniels tells THR of the pitch meeting. "I don’t know whether they had rehearsed it, but they played the parts of their characters well. More than anything, it was just amazing to see them together again."

Daniels, who said Karate Kid still resonates with YouTube users today, noted that the series comes as part of an effort to age up YouTube Red's demographic from 18-34 to the more advertiser-coveted 18-49 set. "It had all the elements you look for in a strong show. It had heart, it had laughs, it had drama, it had characters with strong points of view. All of it was there in the pitch," Daniels said.

Asked specifically why they were ditching the familiar Karate Kid title in favor of Cobra Kai, Daniels said it was driven by the story. "If The Karate Kid was Daniel’s story, Cobra Kai is equal parts Daniel and Johnny’s story. Also because this is a series and not a movie, we really wanted to reimagine how the story was told. Changing the name made sense as part of that."

Marwan Kenzari Cast as Jafar in ALADDIN; Nasim Pedrad Also Joins Cast

GvT2Emv.jpg

Marwan Kenzari, the actor who is poised to break through as part of the all-star cast of the upcoming Murder on the Orient Express, is in negotiations to star as the villain in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin.

At the same time, former Saturday Night Live comedienne Nasim Pedrad has landed a role created specifically for the new movie.

Will Smith is toplining as the wish-granting genie while Mena Massoud will play the title character, a street rat who ends up over his head when he pretends to be a prince in order to win the hand of Princess Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott.

The story, which aims to follow that of Disney’s 1992 animated classic while also taking cues from the folktales in One Thousand and One Nights, is set in Agrabah, a fictional cosmopolitan city inspired by locations and cultures from the Middle East to India and China.

If a deal makes, Kenzari will play Jafar, the grand vizier to the sultan of the Agrabah who wants to use the genie for his own nefarious plans. The character is in the pantheon of the most recognizable Disney villains and was voiced by Jonathan Freeman in the animated movie.

Pedrad will play Mara, the handmaiden and friend to Jasmine. The part is described as a comedic supporting role.

Guy Ritchie is directing the project from a script by John August (Big Fish, Corpse Bride). Dan Lin, who worked with Ritchie on Sherlock Holmes, is producing.

Kenzari also appeared in MGM's Ben-Hur, Universal's The Mummy, and opposite Noomi Rapace and Glenn Close in Netflix’s action thriller What Happened to Monday.

Netflix Acquires Millarworld to Develop Films, TV Series and Kids' Shows

millarworld.jpg

Netflix has acquired Millarworld, the comic book publisher from Wanted and Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar, marking the video streaming giant's first major acquisition.

Terms of the deal weren't announced. But Netflix and Millar will bring Millarworld’s character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to Netflix members globally. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix label.

The acquisition continues Netflix's efforts to work directly with prolific and skilled creators and to acquire IP and ownership of stories featuring popular characters and fictional worlds.

"As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said Monday in a statement.

Millar runs Millarworld with his wife, Lucy Millar, and is bringing Netflix into his superhero universe after working for eight years at Marvel developing comic books and story arcs that inspired the first Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War, and Logan (Wolverine).

Together, those Marvel properties have grossed over $3 billion in worldwide box office. Millarworld has to date spawned 18 published character worlds. Three of them, Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman have gross nearly $1 billion in global box office.

Alfre Woodard Joins the Cast of Disney's THE LION KING

zMCStuH.jpg

Alfre Woodard is the latest to join Jon Favreau's The Lion King, voicing Sarabi, Simba's mom. Woodard joins Donald Glover as Simba and James Earl Jones, who will be reprising his role as Mufasa. Madge Sinclair voiced Sarabi in the original 1994 Disney animated version.

Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner and John Oliver will also voice parts in the feature, which recently added Chiwetel Ejiofor to its roster to play the villain, Scar.

Jeff Nathanson (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) wrote the script for Disney, with Favreau and Jeffrey Silver producing. Lion King is currently shooting in Los Angeles.

Woodard was most recently seen in the Sundance standout Burning Sands and Netflix's Marvel series Luke Cage. Up next for the Oscar nominee is the indie Saint Judy, where she stars opposite Common and Michelle Monaghan, and Clark Johnson's Juanita, where she plays the title role.

Rebecca Thomas to Direct James Wan's Sci-Fi Action Thriller MALIGNANT

8kUc4lF.jpg

Becca Thomas has been tapped to direct Malignant, a sci-fi action-thriller that James Wan is producing for 20th Century Fox.

Malignant is based on a Boom! Studios comic titled Malignant Man that Wan co-created. Boom!’s Ross Richie and Stephen Christy are producing with Wan, who is working via his Atomic Monster label.

The story focuses on Alex Gates, a patient dying of a terminal disease who is resigned to his fate … until it’s discovered that his malignant tumor is actually a mysterious alien parasite. Now imbued with some incredible powers and a renewed purpose, Gates is tasked with fighting a secret army lurking behind the veils of society while also peeling back his own secrets.

Zak Olkewicz wrote the script for the adaptation. Adam Yoelin of Boom! is co-producing. Matt Reilly is overseeing for Fox. In June, Fox acquired a minority stake in Boom!, making it part owner of the comic publisher.

Brad Peyton was previously attached to direct but departed to work on New Line’s Rampage.

Thomas has the unique distinction of being one of only two people outside the Duffer brothers and Shawn Levy to direct an episode of Netflix’s Stranger Things, the other being Wall-E director Andrew Stanton.

Thomas' feature debut was 2012 indie Electrick Children, and she had been poised for a breakthrough since she nabbed the gig to direct a live-action retelling of The Little Mermaid for Universal as well as adapting the John Green book Looking for Alaska for Paramount. Both are still in development.
