PADDINGTON 2 Sets Rotten Tomatoes Record as Best-Reviewed Movie Ever

agtawHs.jpg

Blowing the lid off the critical marmalade jar, Paddington 2 has set a new benchmark as the best-reviewed film ever on Rotten Tomatoes. The little bear from darkest Peru has now notched the most consecutive Fresh reviews without a single Rotten.

Directed by Paul King, the Heyday Films/Studiocanal family sequel began offshore rollout in November, and was released in North America by Warner Bros last Friday. Its worldwide box office is $163M through Thursday.

Over at aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has 167 Fresh reviews and no naysayers, overtaking Toy Story 2‘s 163 Fresh and 0 negative critiques. There’s a codicil that should be added here: in November 2017, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird surpassed Toy Story 2 on the Fresh side, but was later knocked down a percentage point by one negative review, landing it at 99% Fresh. Paddington 2 has a 100% Fresh score.

The multi BAFTA-nominated sequel sees the return of Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Peter Capaldi and Jim Broadbent, and has Hugh Grant and Brendan Gleeson joining the CGI bear’s adventures — he’s voiced again by Ben Whishaw. King and Simon Farnaby wrote the movie that’s based on the Michael Bond creation.

The success is extra sweet given the bear of a situation the movie had to deal with domestically. The Weinstein Co had released the first movie and had an option on this one. In the wake of the mountain of sexual harassment and assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, the North American distribution fate of Paddington 2 was ultimately resolved when Warner Bros beat out Sony, Lionsgate and Global Road to take over the movie in a bidding war that reached $30M.

In North America, P2 was somewhat soft at open. But in a crowded market it finished its first week at $16.8M with strong mid-weeks. Says WB’s Jeff Goldstein, “The key for us is the hold this coming weekend. Given the rare 100% Certified Fresh on RT as well as the A CinemaScore, we are encouraged for strong holds and a long play.”

Pixar's INCREDIBLES 2 Reveals New Cast, Character Details and Concept Art

Incredibles 2 has a recruited a few more stars. Disney started the week by sharing a cast list that includes a few more names, as well as character details for previously announced stars.

HELEN PARR (voice of Holly Hunter), known in the Superworld as Elastigirl, hung up her Supersuit to raise the family with husband Bob, leaving their crime-fighting days behind them. But when she’s tapped to lead a campaign to bring the Supers back into the spotlight, she finds she can still bend, stretch and twist herself into any shape needed to solve the trickiest of mysteries. In short, she’s still got it. That’s good news, too, because a new villain is emerging—unlike any they’ve ever seen before.

BOB PARR (voice of Craig T. Nelson) cherishes his days as Mr. Incredible—a popular Super with mega-strength and the power to singlehandedly take out the bad guys. Ever since Supers were outlawed, Bob’s been mostly lying low, raising the family alongside his wife Helen. But when she’s called on to stretch her Super skills and hopefully change the public perception of Supers for the better, Bob must manage the household on his own, which calls for a completely different set of super powers.

VIOLET PARR (voice of Sarah Vowell), the firstborn of the Parr clan, is an introverted and intelligent 14-year-old teen that doesn’t quite fit in with the normal crowd. Socially awkward, outspoken and sarcastic, Violet plays her teenager role to perfection—all while secretly mastering her superpowers of invisibility and creating force fields. A Super at heart, Violet can’t help her urge to fight crime alongside her family.

DASHIELL PARR (voice of Huckleberry “Huck” Milner) is a 10-year-old boy—restless, relentless, curious—though his remarkable power of Super speed certainly sets him apart. Dash sports a hearty sense of adventure and a boundless supply of energy. He’d love nothing more than to show off his special skills and fight a few bad guys along the way—and doesn’t understand why he has to keep his powers a secret.

JACK-JACK PARR, the baby of the family, likes to sit back with a bottle and a good story. Well-versed in gibberish with a penchant for throwing food, Jack-Jack may seem like a typical toddler, but he just might turn out to be the most powerful Parr in the household—if only his family had a clue of what this kid can really do.

LUCIUS BEST (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) is not only Bob’s best friend, he’s a fellow-former Super who’s so chill, he can make ice with the point of a finger. But even when he’s not fighting crime as Frozone, Lucius is all about style. He has a quick wit and a cool, can-do attitude—and he wouldn’t think twice about breaking out his Supersuit if it could help bring Supers out of hiding.

EDNA “E” MODE (voice of Brad Bird) possesses impeccable design sense, a keen understanding of cutting-edge technology and an unmatched skillset. A creative visionary, she longs for the return of Supers so she can once again create functional yet edgy Supersuits. The petite and powerful fashionista treats her clients like family, dahling, but sticks firmly to her long-held assertion: No capes!

WINSTON DEAVOR (voice of Bob Odenkirk) leads a world-class telecommunications company alongside his genius sister, Evelyn. Ultra-wealthy, savvy and suave, Winston goes big in everything he does—including his infatuation with Supers. He has been a supporter of Supers returning—all he needs is a hero (or three) to help him change public perception and bring them back into the sunlight.

26904058_10156109999731055_1846215829597839960_n.jpg

EVELYN DEAVOR (voice of Catherine Keener), the brilliant brainchild behind her brother Winston’s telecommunications company, knows her way around tech. She loves tinkering with tech, and has never met a problem she can’t solve.

RICK DICKER (voice of Jonathan Banks) heads up the official Super Relocation Program, helping the Parr family keep their Super identities secret—that’s no easy feat with this family. But Rick takes his job very seriously—at least until his division is shuttered, leaving the Parrs all on their own.

VOYD (voice of Sophia Bush) is a young, overeager “wannabe” Super and a mega-fan of Elastigirl. Her superpower is the ability to divert and manipulate objects around her by creating voids that allow the objects to appear and disappear, and shift in space.

26814780_10156110001371055_3845051774500015504_n.jpg

The Supers find an advocate in a dignified foreign AMBASSADOR (voice of Isabella Rossellini) who is committed to the support and legalization of Superheroes.

Ryan Reynolds to Star in Live-Action CLUE Reboot with DEADPOOL Scribes

o9JhgUq.jpg

While questions abound over how Twentieth Century Fox’s feature assets will integrate into Disney, the studio has sent a clue that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds will be big part of the mix. Fox has made a three-year first look deal with Reynolds’ Maximum Effort to hatch projects for the studio. They’ve got the first picture that Reynolds will produce under the new deal.

It is a live action film based on the Hasbro board game Clue, with Maximum Effort producing along with Allspark Pictures, the film division of Hasbro. Fox is in the process of reteaming Reynolds with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first Deadpool film. The writers are in talks.

The film will be developed as a star vehicle for Reynolds, based on the mythology of the venerable board game.

This is a big deal for Fox chairman/CEO Stacey Snider and vice chairman Emma Watts. Deadpool became the highest grossing Fox film since Avatar, as its $783 million worldwide gross establishing itself as the highest global grossing R-rated film of all time. The studio will release the untitled Deadpool sequel, which David Leitch directed, on May 18.

Qvylglh.jpg

John Cena is in talks to star in Paramount’s Duke Nukem movie, a big-screen version of the long-running video game franchise.

The project is set up at Paramount-based Platinum Dunes, which is operated by Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller. No director or writer is attached yet.

Duke Nukem first appeared in the 1991 eponymous video game, developed by Apogee Software, as a muscular cigar-chomping man who always wears Ray-Bans and sports a flat-top haircut as he fights aliens to save planet Earth by using enormous physical strength and his expertise in firearms. He’s appeared in 19 video games as the title character, most recently in Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour.

Platinum Dunes franchises include The Purge, Ouija, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s a producer on John Krasinski’s horror movie A Quiet Place, opening April 6.

Cena made his name as a WWE star before starting another career as a movie actor more than a decade ago with The Marine in 2006. His credits include 12 Rounds, Legendary, The Reunion, Trainwreck, Sisters, Daddy’s Home, Daddy’s Home 2, and The Wall, along with voicing the lead character in the animated comedy Ferdinand.

Cena is starring with Hailee Steinfeld in Paramount’s upcoming Transformers prequel Bumblebee: The Movie, with Bay producing.

Netflix in Talks to Acquire J.J. Abrams' CLOVERFIELD Sequel from Paramount

Netflix is in talks to acquire God Particle from Paramount, the studio that made the latest thriller from J.J. Abrams’ Cloverfield movie series.

Sources say it is unclear if a deal will be made, but if the ink does dry, it will come on the heels of Paramount’s December deal with Netflix in which it unloaded the new Alex Garland-directed movie, Annihilation, on the digital streamer, which picked up all international territories except domestic from the studio. Paramount was set to release God Particle on April 20.

The culling of Paramount’s release slate is being spearheaded by chairman Jim Gianopulos, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The exec took over the reins last spring, watching the movies he had inherited and making some hard choices.

“He sat down and looked at what is theatrical, what is not in this day and age,” says one source. Certain movies were not making the cut.

Paramount has produced and released two Cloverfield films to great profitability. The pics took unique perspectives on what were traditionally big-budget movies. Cloverfield, released in 2008 and directed by Matt Reeves, was a found-footage monster movie made for $25 million that grossed $80 domestically. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) was a contained alien invasion movie that cost even less and made $72 million domestically.

However, God Particle, which was also known as Cloverfield Station, seemed to eschew the model from the get-go. Its budget was in the $40 million-plus range, and its cast was more established, boasting David Oyelowo, Ziyi Zhang, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

Sources say the movie needed some work, and while Abrams expressed an intent to get down to business in postproduction, it was too little, too late. Several sources suggested that Abrams’ attention may be taken up by his unexpected new assignment, the final installment of the Star Wars Skywalker episodes, which he signed on to in September after the firing of director Colin Trevorrow.

I Kill Giants looks very similar to J.A. Bayona's A Monster Calls but less depressing and more action-packed.

So what's the deal with this? Is it metaphorical? Real? Is the kid just schizo?

I'm guessing it's just her imagination. But I would really love it if it turned out to be true and there are real monsters.

A Monster Calls, I think, left the door open but certainly hinted one way over another.
Havent read this comic, but I may have to. I'm methodologically down with such uses of fantasy, but much prefer fantasy worlds where the two are distinct. This is why Bright was dull to me; the fantasy elements didnt really change the world at all, it just conscripted new categories into the blandness of our primary world.
