First Critics' Reactions to THOR: RAGNAROK Hail It as One of Marvel's Most Fun Movie

For the third time this year, it looks like Marvel Studios has a winner on their hands as the first reactions for Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok have poured online and they are incredibly positive all-around, with high praise that describes it as "a movie that's Waititi-ish as hell."

While all of the Chris Hemsworth-led cast is praised for their performances, Tessa Thompson gets special mention several times for stealing the show with her portrayal of Valkyrie. Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum, and Cate Blanchett also get singled out for adding an extra layer of fun to the upcoming blockbuster.

Mark Mothersbaugh's score receives high marks as well, with many describing it as the best soundtrack the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever delivered. Also, it sounds like there are several secret cameos implanted throughout the film, including a few from frequent Waititi collaborators. However, there's no word on any post-credits sequence.

Adam McKay has set Tyler Perry to play Colin Powell in the untitled movie about former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney for Annapurna.

Powell is the four-star general who as Bush Administration Secretary of State pressed the case for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, based on intelligence that Saddam Hussein was manufacturing weapons of mass destruction. None of the weapons Powell cited in his presentation to the United Nations was recovered after Iraq was routed.

Perry will costar alongside Christian Bale, who plays Cheney, Amy Adams as his wife Lynne, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush and Steve Carell as Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.

The film, which is being produced by Annapurna Pictures, Plan B and Gary Sanchez, is in production. Perry wrote, directed and stars in Tyler Perry’s Boo 2: A Madea Halloween, which Lionsgate releases October 20.

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is in negotiations to star in the independent revenge thriller Ruin with Assassin’s Creed director Justin Kurzel attached to helm.

The project is set up at Marc Butan’s Mad River Pictures. The script is written by the team of Matthew and Ryan Firpo and centers on an ex-Nazi captain in post-World War II Germany. He seeks atonement for his crimes by tracking down the surviving members of his former SS Death Squad.

Gadot first appeared as Wonder Woman in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. This year’s Wonder Woman was a blockbuster for Warner Bros. with $821 million in worldwide box office. Gadot will be seen next as Wonder Woman in the studio’s Justice League, which opens Nov. 17.

Gadot is due to star in Wonder Woman 2 for Warner Bros. next year with Patty Jenkins returning to direct the sequel. The studio has already dated Wonder Woman 2 for a Dec. 13, 2019, release. She is also attached to star opposite Bradley Cooper in MGM’s supernatural thriller Deeper.

Josh Boone to Write and Possibly Direct Stephen King's THE TALISMAN

“Fault in Our Stars” and “New Mutants” director Josh Boone will write Amblin Entertainment’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “The Talisman.” Although he’s currently just set to pen the script, there is a possibility he could eventually direct as well.

Frank Marshall is producing the film with Michael Wright exec producing.

Based on the best-selling novel, the movie follows a boy, who in order to save his mother from certain death, enters a parallel world known as the Territories in search of a powerful talisman.

Amblin had initially been developing the project as a TV show, but has since decided to turn it into a film.

Boone has had a long-standing relationship with the author after being tapped to write and direct an adaptation of “The Stand.” When that project was put on hold, the iconic writer tasked Boone with penning an adaptation of “Revival,” which is currently in development.

Hollywood has been busy with King adaptations with “Dark Tower” and “It,” which recently became the biggest horror film of all time, grossing $606 million worldwide. His TV work is also heating up, with Audience Network renewing “Mr. Mercedes” for Season 2 while Hulu is currently shooting “Castle Rock,” which Bad Robot is producing.

Boone broke out as a helmer when he wrote and directed the box office hit “The Fault in Our Stars.” He recently helmed Fox’s “X-Men” spinoff “New Mutants” with Anya Taylor-Joy and also wrote “The Pretenders” from James Franco.

Sony Pictures is in negotiations to acquire the rights to adapt “Catan,” the influential board game also known as “The Settlers of Catan,” into a film.

Gail Katz, whose credits include “Pawn Sacrifice,” “The Perfect Storm,” and “Air Force One,” will produce. Variety first reported in 2015 that she had acquired the rights.

Dan Lin, whose credits include “It” and “The Lego Movie,” and Jonathan Eirich will join the producing team. Blaise Hemingway will write the screenplay.

The studio is fast-tracking the project toward production with the goal of launching a possible franchise. Andrea Giannetti will oversee the project for Columbia.

“We’re excited to be working with Sony to bring the iconic world of Catan to life,” Katz said. “As huge fans of the game, we’re struck by the endless possibilities of stories that it could inspire. It’s not every day that you have the opportunity to work in a world beloved by millions of people, and expand its story for the screen.”

The game, designed by Klaus Teuber, has sold more than 25 million copies in 38 languages and has sparked a renaissance of tabletop games worldwide, with hundreds of new games introduced every year from thousands of designers. Upon its original release in 1995, game critics in Germany honored Catan with its prestigious game of the year award.

The goal of the game is to create the dominant community on the ever-changing fictional island of Catan amid scarce resources.

BEETLEJUICE 2 Moving Forward at Warner Bros. with New Writer Mike Vukadinovich

NJyZNtn.jpg

Mike Vukadinovich will rewrite Beetlejuice 2 at Warner Brothers, a project that has been long gestating as a re-pairing of Tim Burton and Michael Keaton. No deals are anywhere near done with Burton or Keaton but Deadline hears that the two — who are currently working on Dumbo at Disney — have been excited at the thought of collaborating on a sequel. Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions would produce this one.

The original Beetlejuice was directed by Burton in 1988 and has become a cult favorite. In fact, it was recently re-released and is playing in two theaters in Los Angeles now. Released by Warner Bros., the fantasy comedy starred Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as ghosts who haunt their old home. When a little girl (Winona Ryder) accidentally unleashes a mischievous ghost (Keaton), the ghosts try to drive the homeowners (Catherine O’Hara and Jeffrey Jones) out of the house.

Vukadinovich’s most recent film work is Rememory, a science-fiction drama that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was acquired by Lionsgate. Based on his original screenplay, that project stars Peter Dinklage and Julie Ormond. He also wrote Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, based on the Disneyland ride, for Disney with Justin Springer producing and Pete Candeland attached to direct.

Vukadinovich also wrote for the upcoming season of Marvel’s Runaways for Hulu, ABC Studios, and Josh Schwartz, and co-wrote the pilot Horrorstory with Josh Schwartz at Fox, and Gail Berman and Charlie Kaufman executive producing.
