In order for a movie to eligible for a Best Picture Oscar consideration, it has to be screened at "a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County for at least seven consecutive days, during which period screenings must occur at least three times daily, with at least one screening beginning between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily."

    I don't think so.

IT Movie Sequel Plans Move Forward at New Line

Even as New Line prepares for the Friday opening of its much anticipated adaptation of Stephen King's It, the company is moving toward a second movie based on the massive horror novel.

Gary Dauberman, one of the screenwriters on the new It, has quietly closed a deal to pen the screenplay for its sequel, and Andy Muschietti, who directed the new film, is waiting in the wings to return, although no deal is in place.

Producers Barbara Muschietti, Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are expected to return as well.

A sequel, or, as its being called, a Chapter Two, was almost never in doubt even if the involvement of some of the creative players was.

King's opus tells of a group of friends who band together to defeat their small town's demon — first as kids and then a second time as adults. While the book toggles between the young and older characters, New Line structured its adaptation so that the first movie focuses on the kids and is set in the past, with the second movie to be set in the present and will focus on the adults. (In the book, the past was the 1950s; the movie's past is the 1980s.)

The new version of It has been building massive awareness ever since the first trailer exploded to 197 million views across all platforms in its first 24 hours. When the movie appeared on box-office tracking sites in mid-August, it looked as if it was heading for a debut of more than $50 million. Now some box-office observers predict it may open to more than $60 million, an excellent number for a movie that has a budget in the mid-$30 millions. Reviews have been generally strong, with the movie currently sitting at a 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But even as late as a few weeks ago, the creative team was not yet set to return.

On the writing front, the first movie is credited to Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga — who was only weeks from shouting "Action!" as director before leaving due to creative differences and Dauberman. The latter came in after Fukunaga to retool the project, bringing in a fresh perspective just after Muschietti was hired.

Dauberman has, in the last few years, become a New Line favorite, having written Annabelle and its hit sequel, this summer's Annabelle: Creation, as well as the upcoming The Conjuring spinoff, The Nun.

It is unknown if Chapter Two will call for the return of the first movie's young stars. Sources indicate that although the story will take place 27 years later, flashbacks may figure into the plot (just as they do in the book), and if those scenes are new, not repurposed ones from the first chapter, new deals may have to be struck with the rising stars. With no script in hand yet, New Line has not yet approached older actors.

New Line has not set a release date, although 2019 is likely, and if child actors are to be involved, the studio will have to move quickly before they grow out of the roles.

Spike Lee and Jordan Peele Teaming Up for KKK Thriller BLACK KLANSMAN

Spike Lee is teaming with Get Out filmmaker Jordan Peele for Black Klansman, the true story of an African-American police officer who infiltrated the KKK.

John David Washington, the son of Denzel Washington who is also one of the stars of HBO’s Ballers, is in negotiations to star in the dramatic crime thriller that is gearing up to shoot this fall with Focus Features distributing.

Lee will direct and produce the movie with Peele producing via his banner Monkeypaw Productions, along with Sean McKittrick, Shaun Redick and Raymond Mansfield of QC Entertainment and Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions. The latter group teamed up previously to produce Peele’s ground-breaking horror thriller Get Out, a box-office sensation of early 2017.

Klansman tells the story of Ron Stallworth, a detective in Colorado Springs, Colorado, who in 1978 answered an ad in the local newspaper seeking new Klan members. He not only gained membership, but rose through the ranks to become the head of the local chapter. Stallworth, who is black, was able to gather all sorts of intelligence by pretending to be a white supremacist on the phone or via other forms of correspondence but sent a white fellow officer in his place for any in-person meetings. During his undercover work, Stallworth managed to sabotage several cross-burnings and other activities of the notorious hate group.

Stallworth, who will be played by Washington, wrote about his experience in a 2014 book titled Black Klansman. The title is not connected to The Black Klansman, a Blaxploitation revenge thriller from 1966 that told of an African American man who goes deep into the KKK in order to seek vengeance for the death of his daughter.

The screenplay adapting Stallworth’s autobiography was penned by the writing team of Charlie Wachtel and David Rabinowitz as well as by Spike Lee and Kevin Willmont.

Even though he project sounds like it may be ripped from today’s headlines, Lee, Peele and the producers have been quietly working on the movie for at least two years. Redick brought book to QC, with QC then approaching Blumhouse and Monkeypaw following the companies’ successful partnership on Get Out.

Spike Lee and Jordan Peele, oh boy I can already feel the "evil white people" vibes seething from this project. Also, this concept has been ruined for over a decade now, thanks to Dave Chapell.

Indie Hit 47 METERS DOWN Returning for Shark-Infested Sequel

The most successful independent film in the U.S. this year is getting a sequel. 47 Meters Down, the Mandy Moore- and Claire Holt-starring shark thriller that took an unexpected $44 million bite out of the domestic box office this summer (and more than $53 million globally), is to be followed up with 48 Meters Down.

Johannes Roberts is set to return to write and direct the film, based on a script he co-wrote with his collaborator on 47 Meters Down, Ernest Riera. Rising U.K. banner Fyzz Facility is again producing and financing the project, which this time will move the deadly shark action from Mexico to Brazil and follow a group of girls looking for adventure in the coastal metropolis of Recife. Hoping to get off the well-worn tourist trail, they hear about some hidden underwater ruins only to find that the turquoise waves of their secret Atlantis aren’t completely uninhabited.

“We are so pleased by the huge success of 47 Meters Down; it totally exceeded all expectations," said James Harris of The Fyzz Facility. “48 Meters Down will take the claustrophobia of cave diving and the thrill of shark encounters and move everything to the next level.”

Dragon, do you want to speculate on this film's box office success?

It has an amazing cast and seems to be getting a real marketing push, but I can't escape the feeling that young people just aren't going to give a shit and that could really affect its earnings.

I am rooting for it though. It's easily one of my most anticipated films of 2017.

Maybe $25 million or below opening weekend in the U.S. and roughly $80 million total U.S. theatrical run.
