Michael Shannon Frontrunner to Play Cable in DEADPOOL 2

Michael-Shannon-Cable-032217-Dragonlord.jpg

Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner for the much-buzzed about Deadpool 2 role of Cable opposite Ryan Reynolds, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Sources say that Shannon isn't the only one on the studio’s list but is leading the pack as the top choice at this stage. Stranger Things actor David Harbour is also on the shortlist. Kyle Chandler's name surfaced last summer but sources say he was never in contention for the role.

David Leitch is directing the sequel to Fox's surprise blockbuster that grossed $783 million worldwide.

Reynolds is reprising his role as the wisecracking mercenary with the story expanding to include other characters from Deadpool's corner of Marvel’s X-Men universe.

Atlanta breakout Zazie Beetz is already cast as the super-powered merc named Domino.

The character Shannon would potentially play, Cable, was co-created by Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld and writer Louise Simonson, and is described as in many ways being the opposite of Deadpool: a man who is a leader and used to being obeyed, who is very controlled but with an aura of simmering violence. In the comics, Cable was from the future and was the adult of Scott Summers, also known as the X-Man Cyclops.

Deadpool 2 is scheduled to shoot from this summer in Vancouver.

One factor that could prevent Shannon from taking on the role is scheduling. The in-demand Oscar nominee just signed on for the indie What They Had, which shoots this spring.

Shannon, who was nominated for his work in Nocturnal Animals, already has made two comic book movies: He appeared in Jonah Hex and played villain General Zod in Man of Steel.

Sony Developing Spider-Man Spinoff Starring SILVER SABLE and BLACK CAT with Writer Chris Yost

Silver-Sable-Black-Cat-032217-Dragonlord.jpg

Sony’s Spider-Man universe is getting a little bigger. The studio, already in deep development on villain offshoot Venom, is now developing a feature project centered on the female characters Silver Sable and the Black Cat.

Chris Yost, who worked on the upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok, is writing the script, building on a previous version written by Lisa Joy, the co-creator of HBO’s Westworld.

The studio is hoping to go to directors soon with an eye toward a fall start date. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing the project, which was previously known as the "secret female spinoff project."

Silver Sable, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1985, is a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. The character has been both antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.

Black Cat, an acrobatic cat burglar whose real name is Felicia Hardy, has a long and tangled romantic history with Spider-Man in the comics. The character was cut from scripts for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, and a "Felicia Hardy" (played by Felicity Jones) briefly appeared in Amazing Spider-Man 2, though no Black Cat connection was ever made explicit.

Sony has a new and rebooted Spider-Man movie coming this summer, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the superhero and his universe of characters are seen as a bright spot on a rather meager slate. But the problem with having rights to the character and universe is that, while Spider-Man is the most popular Marvel character, the other standouts tend to be the villains from his rogue’s gallery.

Hence, Sony is developing Venom, based on the popular character who already appeared onscreen in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and who has sometimes acted as an antihero in the Marvel comics. The studio has penciled in an October 2018 release and is meeting directors on the project.

Black Cat is a major supporting character in the Spider-Man universe, though Sable is less known.

(The spinoffs are not offshoots from the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming but rather projects spun from the overall franchise and based on Sony's Marvel's Spider-Man universe.)

Yost has deep Marvel ties, having worked on not only two Thor movies, but also having gotten his start writing on Marvel animated series such as Wolverine and the X-Men. He is also known for comic book work on X-23, better known as Wolverine’s cloned daughter who is a headliner in the hit Wolverine movie Logan.

Yasuke-Black-Samurai-Dragonlord.png

Yasuke is one step closer to the big screen. Lionsgate has tapped Highlander creator Gregory Widen to script Black Samurai, THR has confirmed.

The period action drama is based on the historical tale of Yasuke, who is known to be the first black samurai to serve a warlord in Japan. Under a warlord named Oda Nobunaga in the mid-1500s, he is known to be the only known African to reach that ranking in feudal Japan.

Michael De Luca and Stephen L’Heureux are producing the film as a co-production between Solipsist Films and De Luca Productions.

Widen co-wrote Highlander, the 1986 film about the adventures of the ageless immortal Scottish swordsman. It spurred a series of films and a syndicated television series.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN Producer Brett Ratner Slams Rotten Tomatoes Over Film's Low Score

Brett-Ratner-Batman-v-Superman-Dragonlord.jpg

Director and producing mogul Brett Ratner says film critic aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes is a destructive force in Hollywood.

Speaking at the Sun Valley Film Festival last weekend, the X-Men: The Last Stand director wanted to make it clear he has plenty respect for traditional film critics. But he says reducing hundreds of reviews culled from print and online sources into a popularized aggregate score has become a toxic and often inaccurate label.

“The worst thing that we have in today’s movie culture is Rotten Tomatoes,” said Ratner, whose company RatPac Entertainment co-financed Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (among dozens of other Warner Bros. titles). “I think it’s the destruction of our business. I have such respect and admiration for film criticism. When I was growing up film criticism was a real art. And there was intellect that went into that. And you would read Pauline’s Kael’s reviews, or some others, and that doesn’t exist anymore. Now it’s about a number. A compounded number of how many positives vs. negatives. Now it’s about, ‘What’s your Rotten Tomatoes score?’ And that’s sad, because the Rotten Tomatoes score was so low on Batman v Superman I think it put a cloud over a movie that was incredibly successful.”

Directed by Zack Snyder, Batman v Superman cost about $250 million to make and grossed nearly $900 million worldwide — despite being considered a disappointment (with a 27 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes).

“People don’t realize what goes into making a movie like that,” Ratner continued. “It’s mind-blowing. It’s just insane, it’s hurting the business, it’s getting people to not see a movie. In Middle America it’s, ‘Oh, it’s a low Rotten Tomatoes score so I’m not going to go see it because it must suck.’ But that number is an aggregate and one that nobody can figure out exactly what it means, and it’s not always correct. I’ve seen some great movies with really abysmal Rotten Tomatoes scores. What’s sad is film criticism has disappeared. It’s really sad.”

EW reached out to Rotten Tomatoes about Ratner’s thoughts, and Jeff Voris gave us a statement in reply — and it’s not as contrarian to the director’s stance as you might expect. “At Rotten Tomatoes, we completely agree that film criticism is valuable and important, and we’re making it easier than it has ever been for fans to access potentially hundreds of professional reviews for a given film or TV show in one place,” Voris wrote. “The Tomatometer score, which is the percentage of positive reviews published by professional critics, has become a useful decision-making tool for fans, but we believe it’s just a starting point for them to begin discussing, debating and sharing their own opinions.”

Steve Carell, Amy Schumer, Nicole Kidman to Star in Comedy Drama SHE CAME TO ME

Steve Carell, Amy Schumer and Nicole Kidman have signed on to star in She Came to Me, the latest film project from writer-director Rebecca Miller.

Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane are producing via OddLot Entertainment, which was one of the companies behind last year's surprise hit Hell or High Water. Miller, the daughter of playwright Arthur Miller and who has written directed such movies as The Many Lives of Pippa Lee and Maggie’s Plan, is also producing with Damon Cardasis via their banner Round Films.

Plot details were not revealed, but the project is described as a sweeping comedic drama, a multigenerational story about family and the complexities of modern life with a through line of two intertwining love sagas.

OddLot is readying to unveil its first-ever scripted series, Genius, on National Geographic in April. Ron Howard directed the first episode of the show, which focuses on Albert Einstein (played by Geoffrey Rush).

Unfit Holly Holm Amy Schumer Exits Sony's BARBIE Movie Due to Scheduling Conflcts

Amy-Schumer-032317-Dragonlord.png

Amy Schumer won't play Barbie after all. The actress has dropped out of Sony's Barbie, in which she was supposed to play the character that inspired the iconic doll.

“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts," Schumer said Thursday in a statement. "The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

Schumer, who had joined the project in December, recently did a polish on the script by Hilary Winston. Schumer's schedule has become quite busy: Her latest comedy Snatched is due out in May, and on Thursday it also was announced that she is joining the cast of Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me with Steve Carell.

Mattel and producers Walter F. Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal are teaming on the Barbie project, which will try to put a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.

The pic also is currently without a director. In December, Sony pushed its release from May 12, 2017, to June 29, 2018.

Brie Larson to Star as First Female Presidential Candidate in VICTORIA WOODHULL

Brie-Larson-032317-Dragonlord.png

Brie Larson, the star of Room and Kong: Skull Island, will play the first female presidential candidate in Victoria Woodhull.

Amazon has bought the package that sees Ben Kopit writing the script for the story about Woodhull, who was the first woman to be nominated for the U.S. presidency in 1872. She was a women's rights activist and suffragist who could not even vote for herself on Election Day (women were not able to vote until 1920).

Woodhull also was a published author, creating the radical publication Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly in 1870 with her sister. She and her sister also started the first woman-run stock brokerage company.

Larson won a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her starring role in 2015’s Room. She can currently be seen in Warner Bros.' Kong: Skull Island with Tom Hiddleston, and will soon be seen in Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, which will hit theaters in April. The actress also is set to take on the role of Captain Marvel in Disney and Marvel's stand-alone film slated for 2019.

Kopit wrote the script for The Libertine, which has Brett Ratner attached to direct.
