Marvel Might Get X-MEN, FANTASTIC FOUR Back as Talks of Disney Buying Fox

dGfiS3k.jpg

Disney has spoken to 21st Century Fox about acquiring most of its assets in a move that, should it come to fruition, would allow the Rupert Murdoch-controlled company to focus almost exclusively on sports and news, according to CNBC.

The negotiations come at a pivotal time, as Disney is readying a streaming product to rival Netflix and could use movie and TV content from 21st Century Fox to do so. As for 21st Century Fox, it is trying to purchase European satellite TV service Sky, which would help it distribute both news and sports, along with all other content.

Executives at Disney and Fox spoke for the past few weeks but are no longer negotiating, David Faber of CNBC reported Monday. He added that negotiations could begin again but that there's no guarantee a deal will get done.

The potential purchase would finally bring the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and all ancillary characters under the Disney-owned Marvel umbrella.

For Fox, a deal to unload its TV and movie studio on Disney would mean partially exiting a rapidly changing space where competition suddenly includes richly funded digital companies like Amazon.com, Facebook, Google and Netflix. News and sports, on the other hand, remain slightly more predictable businesses.

Disney's need for content, meanwhile, has never been greater, given the streaming business it is creating with its acquisition of BAMTech in August is meant to go head-to-head with Netflix.

Disney, in fact, is pulling its Pixar and Disney-branded content from Netflix so that consumers desiring those shows and movies will have incentive to subscribe to Disney's upcoming service, which will also include Marvel and Star Wars product and could conceivably add movies and shows from Fox at a later date.

Disney already owns one broadcast TV network in ABC, so it couldn't also purchase Fox's broadcast network without violating current FCC rules. But it would like to get its hands on the rival conglomerate's cable channels, such as National Geographic and FX, although Fox News Channel is presumably off the table.

Universal's DARK UNIVERSE in Peril as Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan Exit

nayJvOw.jpg

Universal's cinematic Dark Universe is in danger of being mummified.

Just five months after Universal released a much-discussed cast photo promising a slew of movies starring the likes of Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe and Javier Bardem — all drawn on characters like the Invisible Man, Wolf Man and Frankenstein in its stable of classic horror films — none of the projects appears to have a pulse.

Writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, who were hired as the monster universe architects, have departed the franchise, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Kurtzman, whose deal with Universal lapsed in September, is focusing on television (he's an executive producer on CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery, and his overall deal with CBS involves more than a half-dozen shows), while Morgan has returned to the Fast and Furious franchise and is writing a spinoff for Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.

In early October, Universal pulled the plug on preproduction that had started in London for Bride of Frankenstein — which was to have followed The Mummy as the second entry in the series — partly because execs felt the script by David Koepp and overseen by director Bill Condon wasn't ready. Angelina Jolie had been courted for the lead but is now not attached. Insiders insist Condon (Beauty and the Beast) remains attached, but no date has been set to resume work, and a Feb. 14, 2019, release has been shelved.

All this comes in the wake of Mummy's poor performance. Released in June, the Tom Cruise picture grossed a relatively paltry $409 million worldwide on a budget of $125 million-plus (some insiders place it considerably higher). That doesn't include marketing costs of at least $100 million.

Emblematic of Dark Universe's problems is the tony office building on the Universal lot that was revamped at considerable expense for the new venture. After being decked out in monster regalia, it now sits mostly empty.

Universal is exploring its options. One road involves offering the IP to high-profile filmmakers or producers (Jason Blum has been mentioned) with ideas for one-off movies not connected to a larger universe. And the studio could find a new architect who could overhaul the concept.

"We've learned many lessons throughout the creative process on Dark Universe so far, and we are viewing these titles as filmmaker-driven vehicles, each with their own distinct vision," says Universal president of production Peter Cramer. "We are not rushing to meet a release date and will move forward with these films when we feel they are the best versions of themselves."

The Mummy aside, the studio has had big wins in 2017. It boasts two $1 billion grossers (April's Fate of the Furious and July's Despicable Me 3), while sleeper hits like M. Night Shyamalan's Split ($278 million on a $9 million budget) and Jordan Peele's Get Out ($253 million on a $4.5 million budget) earned critical and commercial praise.

For Morgan and Kurtzman, it makes sense to move away from Dark Universe and back to Fast and Star Trek, note observers.

"This affords Alex Kurtzman more time for a project that is really working well: Star Trek Discovery," says New York-based freelance critic Jordan Hoffman, host of the official Star Trek podcast, who was in attendance of a Mummy screening that elicited unintended laughter from the crowd.

Is there hope for the Dark Universe? Yes, says comScore box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, pointing to Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man: Homecoming success after the franchise had lost its footing with 2014's Amazing Spider-Man 2 or Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, which had an opening weekend that outperformed the two previous Chris Hemsworth-led solo outings. "It's never too late to course-correct," he says, "because with each movie, you get another shot."

"There's no way to give up on this. This is Universal's legacy," he adds.

First Look at Samuel L. Jackson's Mr. Glass on the Set of GLASS

Samuel L. Jackson suited up in a snazzy purple metallic trench coat outside shuttered Allentown State Hospital on the Pennsylvania set of M. Night Shyamalan's 2019 sequel Glass on Tuesday. It was the first sighting of the 68-year-old Oscar nominee reprising his role as comic book art gallery owner-turned-arch villain Elijah Price aka Mr. Glass. Elijah's hair has greyed since audiences last saw him in the 2000 superhero origin flick Unbreakable, which ended with his brittle-boned character hospitalized after orchestrating three acts of terrorism.

On Monday, James McAvoy shared a behind-the-scenes snap of himself wigging out as his Split character Kevin Wendell Crumb aka The Horde, who possesses 24 personalities including one called The Beast.

Thomas Jane Reveals New Plot Details from Shane Black's THE PREDATOR

P37S5TL.jpg

The Predator is headed to the suburbs in Shane Black’s upcoming reboot of the popular franchise. Star Thomas Jane spoke to Shadow Nation and revealed some new details about the highly anticipated film.

“We play these veterans from like Afghanistan, Iraq war or whatever,” Jane says. “But we’re all f---ing crazy so we go to the VA hospital to get our meds. We’re all like shellshocked, PTSD… soldiers. We’re at the VA hospital and we’re in group therapy and of course, somebody flips out…this is backstory, I don’t think we really see this…somebody flips out and we all get arrested and get thrown onto the bus to go down to the hospital and they throw this other guy on the bus too.”

“And he’s a guy they’ve actually marked to kill him because he’s seen a UFO, he’s seen the Predator ships come down so they lock him up and throw him in with us lunatics,” he said. “They’re going to take that bus, drive it down to a ditch and shoot us all just to get rid of this one guy. But, of course, we take the bus over and we’re all like ‘f--k that man, let’s go kill these f--king Predators ourselves’ and we’re just crazy enough to believe that this guy really did see a UFO and there’s these aliens out there.”

Jane will be joined in the new film by co-stars Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Boyd Holbrook, Edward James-Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, and Yvonne Strahovski, with Jake Bousey playing the role of the son of Gary Busey's character from Predator 2. Shane Black will direct. The Predator opens in theaters on August 3, 2018.

Thomas Jane Reveals New Plot Details from Shane Black's The Predator

First it's the suburbs, then it isn't the suburbs, and now it's back to the suburbs.

And that plot... For real???

Suburbs? Unarmed PSTD soldiers in a bus? Predator wanting to kill a man has to wait for that man to be thrown into a bus?

Are we dealing with some kind of feminine Predator? Some new age sensitive Predator fad going on in Predator planet?

I've never been less excited with a Predator movie. Even the plots for the AvP movies sounded more promising.

New STAR WARS Trilogy Announced with Rian Johnson to Write, Direct First Movie

wKdM3ws.jpg

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is expanding a galaxy far, far away.

The writer-director will create a new trilogy set in the Star Wars universe and will write and direct the first installment, Lucasfilm announced Thursday. Ram Bergman, Johnson's longtime producer partner, will produce.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

The new movies will be separate from the continuing Skywalker saga and "Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored," according to the announcement.

The move is a strong vote of confidence by Disney and Lucasfilm on Johnson's work in the upcoming Last Jedi, which opens Dec. 15.

During an earnings call Thursday, Disney CEO Bob Iger said in addition to the new trilogy, the Star Wars universe would be expanding with a live-action TV show, which would be available on a Disney streaming service, set to launch in 2019.

The new trilogy comes as Lucasfilm also has Solo: A Star Wars Story out May 25, 2018 and director J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX out Dec. 20, 2019.

I don't get this.

Shouldn't the focus be on the NYT? They had the Pentagon Papers first. The WAPO simply decided to be one of several newspapers that published them after the NYTs was told they couldn't.

WONDER WOMAN 2: GAL GADOT REPORTEDLY WON'T RETURN UNLESS STUDIO BUYS OUT PRODUCER BRETT RATNER

The actress allegedly wants him completely removed from the franchise.
BY ALEX OSBORN Gal Gadot reportedly won't return to star in Wonder Woman 2 if producer Brett Ratner—who has been accused of sexual misconduct—remains involved with the film franchise.

According to Page Six, a source from Hollywood claims "Gadot is saying she won't sign for the sequel unless Warner Bros. buys Brett out [of his financing deal] and gets rid of him."

Ratner helped producer the first Wonder Woman movie as part of a co-financing deal with Warner Bros. through his production company RatPac-Dune Entertainment, which will reap a fair chunk of the profits thanks to the film's success.

The aforementioned source told Page Six that Gadot "knows that Warner Bros. has to side with her on this issue as it develops" because the studio "can't have a movie rooted in women's empowerment being part-financed by a man accused of sexual misconduct against women."

In the wake of sexual harassment allegations against Ratner from actresses including Natasha Henstridge and Olivia Munn, Warner Bros. announced it was cutting ties with the producer. Last month, Gadot is said to have backed out of going to a dinner during which she was set to present Ratner with an award.

Good. I hope Hollywood continues to eat itself so that it can stop trying to sell itself and morally superior. Also, go Gadot (though I hate penchant for nationalism)

Looks awesome. Wes Studi is a boss.

Cool Bale and Foster again after 3:10 to Yuma. If this movie is remotely as good as that, it will be something to see.
