With actual figures now in, Universal Pictures‘ The Fate of the Furious has now officially set the record as the biggest opening of all time with $532 million in global box office, including $98.8 million from the U.S. and Canada and $433.2 million from 63 international territories this weekend.

The record was previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $529 million. This is also the all-time biggest international weekend by a large margin, beating the previous record holder Jurassic World ($316.7 million).

The Fate of the Furious elevated Universal’s international box office past $1 billion on Friday. Universal is the second studio to reach this milestone in 2017. It is Universal’s 11th year in a row grossing $1 billion in international box office and this is the second fastest getting there after 2015.

The film opened No. 1 in every territory and scored all-time opening weekend records in 19 territories. They are Argentina, Colombia, Egypt, Estonia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia, Middle East, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, U.A.E., Uruguay, and Venezuela.

China grossed an amazing $192.1 million, making The Fate of the Furious the biggest three-day opening weekend of all-time and the biggest Hollywood opening of all-time there. It is the second-biggest opening weekend of all films, all-time behind local title The Mermaid (which included four full days of previews over Chinese New Year).

An 8th entry with the main attraction being cars driving in ice.. Well, people here were giving Kong 9/10, so I guess the forced retardation is nearly complete. Impressive execution of the process, really.

GOTG 2 could not have been expected to be as good as the first, but I'll be seeing it, and I think it's going to be fun.

Jude Law to Play Young Dumbledore in FANTASTIC BEASTS Sequel

Jude-Law-Dumbledore-Fantastic-Beasts-Sequel-Dragonlord.jpg

Jude Law has been tapped to play young Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel starring Eddie Redmayne.

David Yates is returning to direct and Johnny Depp is also on board to star. Albus Dumbledore is one of the most iconic characters in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World.

The two-time Academy Award nominee will portray Dumbledore long before the iconic wizard became the Headmaster at Hogwarts. We meet him decades earlier, when Dumbledore is still serving as the wizarding school’s Transfiguration professor. He is also a contemporary of Gellert Grindelwald, the charismatic dark wizard who believes wizards are superior to Muggles and No-Majs.

Rowling, who made her screenwriting debut on the global hit Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, has also written the screenplay for the second installment, which story moves deeper into an increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where Newt Scamander and company have to decide on their allegiances.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Turned Down Cameo Offer in Shane Black's THE PREDATOR

Arnold-Schwarzenegger-The-Predator-040617-Dragonlord.jpg

It has already taken out human mercenaries, alien warriors and even Topher Grace — but there's one person that the Predator can't intimidate. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he's had a chance to read the screenplay for the upcoming relaunch of the sci-fi monster franchise, and he's not impressed.

Asked by Yahoo! Movies if he was involved with Shane Black's revival of the series, Schwarzenegger revealed that he'd already been approached — but had turned down the opportunity.

"They asked me, and I read it, and I didn’t like it — whatever they offered," he said. "So I’m not going to do that, no. Except if there’s a chance that they rewrite it, or make it a more significant role. But the way it is now, no, I won’t do that."

The actor had starred in the original Predator in 1987 as Dutch Schaefer, the sole human survivor of a Predator attack — indeed, he defeated the Predator in hand-to-hand combat — but it's unclear if he would have been reprising that role or appearing in a different capacity in Black's project, The Predator, which takes place after the first two movies in the series but before 2010's Predators.

The chances for Schwarzenegger to get his wish and have the role expanded are getting smaller by the day: Production on the movie started in February.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Rejected 'The Predator' Role After Reading the Script

The first Predator was a serious movie. When one of the characters in Kong died, you absolutely could not care, at all. Impossible. Predator had real characters in it. It was meant to be a popcorn flick, but at least the characters mattered a little. That's what the series has lost. What movies have lost. Can they make a damn serious feeling movie or not?? Look at the last terminator compared to the first.. How can an entire industry regress that far?

MISSISSIPPI GRIND's Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to Direct CAPTAIN MARVEL

Ryan-Fleck-Anna-Boden-Captain-Marvel-Dragonlord.jpg

Mississippi Grind Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have been tapped to direct Marvel’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson.

Since announcing the Oscar winner would be playing the titular superhero, the studio has taken its time in finding the film’s director. Marvel made it clear they wanted a female guiding the ship on this film’s voyage.

The studio had met with several contenders and sources say the studio not only wanted to make sure that the search was thorough but that the script was in the right shape before tapping who would direct it.

Kevin Feige has an eye for tapping talent that is ready to break out with James Gunn and the Russo Brothers as prime examples and it looks to be the case again with this duo.

The studio was looking for a unique point of view and they are heading into a new era films where they want to grow and change in a certain way that fits that new environment.

Execs met with the duo many times before the studio decided to go with them and time and time agan the pair impressed the studio with what they wanted to do with this character.

The two have the advantage of navigating the TV and film world and Marvel does see that as a strength when it comes to developing and shooting their films.

Best known for their character study dramas like Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind, Boden and Fleck have spent a lot of time directing episodes for such popular TV shows as The Affair and Billions.

Inside Out scribe Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are currently writing the script, which follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. The resulting alteration imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy project, and flight.

Will Smith in Talks to Play the Genie in Guy Ritchie's Live-Action ALADDIN Movie

Will-Smith-Genie-Aladdin-041917-Dragonlord.jpg

Will Smith is in talks to take on the genie role made famous by the late Robin Williams in Disney’s live-action Aladdin from Guy Ritchie, Deadline reports.

The adaptation of the animated feature follows the studio’s strategy of bringing its classic animated titles to life and so far it has been a goldmine, most recently with Beauty and the Beast which has already grossed over $1B worldwide.

Smith had previously been in talks with Tim Burton about Dumbo but that did not materialize and sources say these talks are also early.

Like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin will be a live-action musical and that would fit well with Smith who is not only an actor but was known to the world for his musical prowess as The Fresh Prince rapper before he hit the little or big screen. The production is gearing up for a long, six-month shoot, so that is one consideration. It is supposed to start in the U.K. in July and wrap early next year.

John August (Big Fish) scripted the story based on the 1992 animated classic and follows the story of Aladdin and Princess Jasmine after the commoner Aladdin finds a magic lamp and, upon shining it up, a genie is released from being trapped inside. The bigger-than-life genie then grants Aladdin three wishes.

3 New Images from ALIEN: COVENANT Including the Gruesome-Looking Neomorph

jTMUZFX.jpg

The first image shows the gruesome-looking “Neomorph”, chowing down on a hearty meal. The Neomorph was inspired by Scott’s fondness for nature documentaries on living nightmares, like goblin sharks. “Some of those nature videos are so stomach-churning that they don’t pay me enough to watch them,” shudders Covenant screenwriter John Logan. “But Ridley will see something to do with insects swarming, for example, which eventually finds its way into a movie. Usually there’s some sort of grotesqueness we find interesting.”

The second image shows Michael Fassbender, returning in one of his dual roles as the android David (“My first question was, ‘Do I get paid double?’” Fassbender quips in the issue), in what appears to be a flashback with Weyland Industries CEO Peter Weyland.

Colin Salmon, Patrick Malahide and Rege-Jean Page Join MORTAL ENGINES

Colin-Salmon-Mortal-Engines-Dragonlord.jpg

Game of Thrones actor Patrick Malahide, Arrow actor Colin Salmon and Rege-Jean Page (Roots) have joined the cast of Mortal Engines, the Peter Jackson-produced adaptation of the YA book series by Philip Reeve.

Jackson's protege Christian Rivers is directing the project, which is being co-financed by MRC and Universal.

Robert Sheehan (Misfits) leads a cast of rising actors (with Hugo Weaving and Stephen Lang thrown in for good measure). The story is set in a future world devastated ecologically and technologically, where certain cities such as London are run by engines and move about Earth, giving them the ability to prey on other smaller towns for resources.

The plot centers on a teen named Tom Natsworthy who, along with a young woman from a territory known as the Outlands, uncovers a mystery that could change the world order.

Production is under way in New Zealand. Character details for the British actors were not revealed.

Malahide may be best known for playing Balon Greyjoy in HBO's hit fantasy.

Salmon co-starred on the recent Limitless TV show and 24: Live Another Day and appeared in movies such as 2016's Criminal and London Has Fallen.

In addition to appearing in Roots, Page was in Brit show Waterloo Road.

Universal Revs FAST & FURIOUS Spinoff Starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham

Fate-Furious-Jason-Statham-Dwayne-Johnson-042117-Dragonlord.png

Universal is huddling on a spinoff that will focus on the characters originated by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and most recently seen in The Fate of the Furious, sources said. The franchise architects have said they might broaden the universe with spinoffs, and source said this is the one they are pursuing.

This is in early stages, but they’ve met on the concept, which sources said will be scripted by Chris Morgan, the chief writer of the series that is hitting new heights with the eighth installment. The idea is for Johnson’s U.S. Diplomatic Security Agent Luke Hobbs to form an unlikely alliance with Statham’s Decker Shaw for a movie that conceivably could be made while they are figuring the next Fast film.

Johnson stepped into the franchise in Fast Five, and Statham established his in Fast & Furious 6. Each began as an antagonist to the core street-racing family but grudgingly earned their way into the circle of trust.

There’s not much more to say right now; Morgan hasn’t begun writing, but they are talking. Johnson and Statham certainly showed good chemistry in the new film, which going into its second weekend has grossed $685 million worldwide. The two-hander spinoff seems a clever way to extend a franchise, which has shown little signs of running out of gas.
