Millennials and DIY

You're all sexually ambiguous girly men with no life skills and the first generation where we see the "Wall-E" human race step into the forefront.

Abortion isn't going to be a moral conundrum in 20 years. You'll all be so disgusted with yourselves that it will be the norm.

The only real men left in the world, third world shitholes, will steal your leaders' lunch money, impregnate your women and end Western global domination with nothing more than a stick and mean words. To appease them, the president of the US will sit down with one of the tribal warlords to talk about their feelings and offer them control of the country to improve Overlord Ralph Scipio Bubba Biakabutuka's self esteem.

You can't build closet shelves and the world as we know it is doomed. Do the world a favor and DIY into a napkin.
<{danawhoah}>

That's not true though. They can upload a selfie to social media like nobody's business.

I am 49 lest you think my response is coming from a whiny youngster. But It has always baffled me how every generation menstruates about what pussies their progeny are.

You are all basically just admitting you are dogshit parents, incapable of passing on skills to your offspring.

Successive generations are like fighters that come into a gym with backgrounds from different disciplines. They come in with different strengths and weaknesses.

We are the fucking coaches. It's our job to make sure they are well rounded fighters. If they are not, it's our fucking fault.

There a lot of areas where the societal environment that sharpened my skills no longer exists to do that for my kids. In those areas, I notice, step in, and fill the gaps.

Meanwhile though, my fucking 10 year old daughter is writing fucking code. Which to my great shock I learned is not that unusual for kids of that age. And my 5 year old daughter snuck on to my computer and sent me an email (to me-- from me) wishing me a happy birthday and telling me I am old.

The only millennials that are my gens kids are those that had them at age 16-20, they're usually that poor that you can't really blame their lack of abilities.

A man should have an understanding of how to do most mechanical or construction things.

Should only “outsource” once you understand what you’re outsourcing.

Diy fails to account for expertise. You’ll fix your toilet once every five to ten years? Plumber fix toilet every day or more. Who do you think is going to be better and more efficient?

Do you want a pilot who flies once or twice a year or pilot who flies weekly? Do you want a surgeon who does a procedure once a month or a surgeon who does a procedure weekly?

Do you want to wait for a plumber to turn up when your sink or toilet is leaking, causing your floor to get soaked and potentially damage the ceiling beneath paying for the privilege, or fix it yourself in minutes?

Just about anything. Growing up, I had family members in various trades that taught me a lot when I helped them out with various projects. I've been to school for a trade and a lot of aspects of it transfer over to plenty of other fields. I actually enjoy learning how to do new stuff.

Dude we're in a DIY thread. Of course we're going to talk about the positive effects of DIY. You started it out by talking about how oil changes are a waste of time and money and I explained to you that they aren't.

We waste a ton of time arguing with each other on a ninja forum so I can't take anyone here seriously when they act like their time is insanely valuable.

And a lot of people, including car guys like the one that posted in this thread, will disagree that it saves a bunch of time and money. If you google it, you'll see a ton of articles examining if it actually saves much time and money as well. It's extremely insignificant and one of the absolute worst returns in regards to DIY. You are only proving the point that I'm making. Car guys that decide to do their own oil changes are so die hard on the benefits when everything else points otherwise.

It just depends on who you are. I don't want to drive 10 min each way to an oil change spot and then wait a half hour for them to do it while trying to upsell me on fluids, brakes, blinker fluid etc. I'd rather just knock it out in my driveway in less time, while being able to be productive at the same time instead of sitting in a waiting room reading good housekeeping while some kid works on my shit. I don't know anyone who says its the biggest money saver in the world. Some of us just don't want to go and wait when we can do it ourselves.

In your situation, you don't have to wait. That's fine and dandy. I don't need to google anything about it because I know how much it costs for a shop to do it and I know how much it costs for me to do it. You think that a jack and jack stands is a bad investment so you're proving the threads point that millennials don't DIY enough.

Turning the valve to stop water flow is not fixing it. Anybody should know how to temporize the situation. Your comments show your stupidity. Fucking millenial. Don’t know what they don’t know.

You may need to run the #s again. If you think I'm a millenial, your time would be better spent working on math than tinkering with oil changes.

I was thinking earlier that I'm a millennial and I can't really DIY anything, feels bad man.
Fellow millennials, what can you DIY? Let's bring the much-reviled millennial generation back up a bit.
I know guitars pretty well. I can do most anything to a guitar. I build pedals too.

Next time you want to learn to do something, just watch a youtube vid and give it a try. I mean, start small obviously, but its that "I don't know how to do this shit" thing you have to get past. People learn from doing.

I don't have to run the numbers again because I'm not taking up front costs into account. I do more with my tools than just change oil so the up front costs don't apply to me because they were paid off years ago.

I have no idea how old you are but I had to at least touch you with a millennial jab on the way out lol

Please you can make a living masturbaitng on a camera hooked up to your laptop if you want to. Never even leave your house. Just know you are less successful than that guy if you’re still complaining. You just have to go to work and show up, then have a goal.
It's even easier than that, bro - the camera is built into the laptop.

<WellThere>

I would have thought it would be easier to do DIY projects now a days with the endless tutorials you can find on the net, hence I would think millennials are more likely to do them. It also depends on your upbrining/exposure. My dad was a carpenter/finisher and contractor when I grew up. I would actually help out and watch my dad work on many projects. My brother actually worked with him for a year. If you have the skills/abilities I think doing your own DIY projects come out better then most hired general contractors/specialist since time = money for them, but for you making things pefect rather then time is typically a priority. That's only assuming you have the compentent skills that meet expectations because if you don't sometimes it can result in a nightmare and a crappy end product. For example even the most simpliest project of people painting their own rooms that have paint bleeding to the ceilings and moldings with streaks showing in certain areas of the wall. I've seen DIY floor installation that end up with soft spots and gaps all over the place after months go by.

All about the DIY. Grew up with tools and what not so I feel comfortable doing myself. My wife is pretty good at it too.

As someone that builds houses for a living
You're better off just getting some dickhead in to do it for you and pay for it with your 'real'
Job

People talking of money saving or time saving ITT.

The main reason for being able to do things that are needed doing in your everyday life is the satisfaction of a job well done that you then see every day.

A roof that doesn't leak, a level floor, a perfectly glossed skirting board. Such things continue to give pleasure long after a purchased high fades.
