Michigan republicans circumventing

the will of the people.

Michigan Republicans pull dirty move on voters. They passed proposal made by Tracey Pease a waitress who makes just over 3 dollars and hour. Pease worked hard to successfully get hundreds of thousands of signatures to get a ballot referendum to increase tipped wages and minimum wage increase and paid sick leave.

Republicans saw this coming so they just signed the increase straight into law. They did this because Pease ballot referendum once passed into law would need a 3/4 majority vote to undo. By passing the ballot directly into law first they can now undo it with a simple majority vote.

That is pretty underhanded and manipulative and they did it so they can work directly against what the people want.

Sneaky underhanded and disgusting but it's nowhere in the same league as what the Republicans are doing in North Carolina. Read up on what they are doing, it will make you physically ill.

Make a thread please?

Assuming the republicans intent was underhanded, in what scenario would they use the simple majority to undo the new min wage law.

Typically when you give something to the little people its really unpopular to undo it later. Example more poor republicans now support the ACA.

It seems illogical that they would have done this now only to be able to shoot themselves in the foot later.

I was shocked you could not see the Republican reason for doing this. It should be really obvious that the republican party is only in support of businesses and business owners. They don't give a shit about people otherwise.

In Michigan, overturning a ballot referendum once it is approved by the voters requires a three-fourths majority of the legislature. By passing the measures now and scrapping the ballot referendum, Michigan lawmakers can instead undo them through a simple majority vote. Lawmakers have vowed to take up the proposals in the lame-duck session this fall, before they are scheduled to take effect.

Business groups opposed to both measures cheered the vote, saying they had pushed lawmakers in both parties to approve the measure they ultimately hoped to defeat. Charlie Owens, of the National Federation of Independent Business, said approving the plans were necessary to avoid “an impossible hurdle that would have left us stuck” with the proposals.

“It’s confusing, because we’re opposed to the proposals, so we asked the legislature to vote for them,” Owens said. Owens pointed to research he said showed servers make less money when the tipped wage is increased, a claim contested by liberal groups.

Michigan state lawmakers are not saying exactly how they plan to change either plan but acknowledge the purpose of their vote Wednesday was to stop the public from ratifying the proposed ballot initiatives. Attempts to change the laws before the end of the legislative session may throw the battle to the courts, as one group has already vowed to sue if the legislation heads to the courts.

Sounds like you guys need to get those fascist arseholes out of power.

$3 an hour? Wtf???

everyone is just assuming they will

Michigan, checking in.

Yup, we're red ATM.

For the first time in my life I'm gonna vote the straight Dem ticket. The Republicans are quickly losing any chance of getting my vote locally. They've already lost me nationally, there's nobody they could run I would vote for. They don't deserve a single vote because they elevated DJT which was just a huge middle finger to intelligence and morality.

The Republicans have taken any credibility they had and just threw it out the fucking window with that dick move.

They are literally saying they only support it because otherwise it would be impossible to repeal later on.

Does not mean they are for sure going to do it...

try to walk back a wage increase law, see how that rolls out.....

if anything I could see them just implementing it really slowly or not entirely as a way to stall

That doesnt makes it any less of a scumbag move.

no, no it doesn't

but in general people don't feel too sorry for grown adults that work as servers (or any minimum wage level job), and whatever wage problems they suffer as a result. This is the main reason we don't have a living wage in this country
