This is just blatantly incorrect. You're wrong, it's much different now than it was then. Gay people were forced to hide the fact that they were gay, and they had pretend they were straight by dating women in public. Yes, they were victims. People like Ellen helped to change that, that is a fact, and it's not exactly a hard reality to grasp.

"Such things used to be private." Lol. Everyone's wife and family were public, it was only homosexuality that had to be hidden. Nobody keeps their sexuality private and never did, unless they were gay. "Privacy" was only for people who were forced to hide. Lots of Hollywood actors were gay, and they all married or dated women in public to hide it because you could not openly say you were gay or your career would be over.
