McGeary looking to fight on Bellator London

Former Bellator light heavyweight champion Liam McGeary will return to competition on Friday in Belfast, Northern Ireland as he will meet Brett McDermott in the main event of Bellator 173.

McGeary (11-1) was initially scheduled to meet Chris Fields on this fight card, but Fields was forced to pull out of the event due to injury and Bellator announced that Vladimir Filipovic was stepping up on five days notice to face McGeary. However, Bellator announced today that Filipovic was removed from the fight card due to visa issues and McDermott is taking the fight on 48 hours notice.

During last week’s episode of “The MMA Report Podcast,” McGeary was a guest on the podcast to talk about returning at Bellator on Friday and how he is looking to fight at Bellator 179 in London later this year.

I wish Mcgreary had gotten an earlier start for his career. He has a lot of potential to be very good, but a very small window to try and accomplish it in. If he can work on remedying his major issues in his last few fights he could go a long way. Take down defense, sweeps, and being able to land damage from the bottom. He winds up on the bottom with good subs, but some guys can just play it safe enough to stay out of them, then he loses the round from being on the bottom. Strengthening any or all of those 3 areas can make him a much more diverse fighter to get by. Especially with his length, he could carve guys up from the bottom with the angles he could use his elbows from on the bottom. It's a hard trait to develop, but the guys who have real nasty bottom strikes it really deters guys from just trying to dive into the take down.

Edit: Yes I know he beat Tito, but it still shows good wrestlers more often than not are probably going to get top position on him.

Vassell would be a good fight, as long as its not another fight like the one tomorrow. Even with the injury replacement he's a former champ fighting Fields?

Honestly mcdermotts k.obof oli thomson is much better then anything chris fields has done at this point but with that being said i think this could have been a great time to see philpe lins vs mcgeary which was supposed to be tourny fina before philpe injured his leg in the anuderson fight , id also like to see sakara get more active in that division always loved the guy

Don't see sakara really stepping into the real lhw picture for a while. He is helping Bellator draw some sizable crowds in Italy. Keep in mind that sakara is basically fighter guys they knew he can beat. Why would Bellator risk a money guy like sakara, when they can keep feeding him sub par strikers for him to knock out infront of thousands of Italians?

Not saying I like it, but sakara and are probably happy with each others work. Sakara most likely getting healthy paychecks... and Bellator keeps penetrating Italy.

Sure i understand that but at the same time the bellator lhw division is an interesting one and i wouldnt mind seeing him fight someone such as vassel or newton had they not cut him alot of good young guys as wel like viana and lins
