WASHINGTON — Members of Congress said they were deeply concerned following reports that the U.S. is planning to abandon a covert operation to train and equip Syria moderate rebels.

The program, run by the Central Intelligence Agency, is separate from the one run by the Department of Defense. The move to end the program was first reported by The Washington Post. Pentagon officials referred questions about that program’s potential termination to the White House.

The Defense Department’s program, which had a shaky start in 2015 after almost all of the original trainees fled, has now trained thousands of Kurdish and Arab Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State group. Those forces have been getting additional training and assistance at various U.S. bases throughout Syria in preparation for the fight to retake Raqqa. The Pentagon requested $500 million in the 2018 defense budget to continue the program.

However, that program also faces significant challenges. NATO ally Turkey opposes arming many of the Syrian rebel forces the U.S. has partnered with and earlier this year conducted airstrikes in northern Syria that killed several U.S.-partnered forces. In addition, Russia and the besieged government of Syrian president Bashar Assad have also targeted Syrian Kurds and Arabs trained by the U.S.
The U.S. has conducted airstrikes to protect the trained forces, downing a Syrian jet, two pro-regime drones and destroying pro-regime fighting positions that were attacking the trained fighters.

Still, the CIA’s program was seen as an integral part of securing a future for Syria that did not include Assad, whose regime has killed hundreds of thousands of its own civilian during its civil war, which began in 2011. Reports of the covert program’s demise were met with swift criticism on Capitol Hill.

"If these reports are true, the administration is playing right into the hands of Vladimir Putin," said Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

"Making any concession to Russia, absent a broader strategy for Syria, is irresponsible and short-sighted," McCain said.

This guy and a bunch of others really need to get out of office.

Mccain is a hawk, of course he want the US to keep throwing our money into the whirlpool known as the Middle East.

Even if you believe it's a noble winnable fight, the risk of them getting killed and conquered and our weapons falling into the wrong hands and used against us down the road isn't worth that risk.

He will be dead soon anyway so hopefully whoever replaces him isn't such a war monger.

It's a naive belief that a man in the twilight of his existence is going to reflect on the choices he has made and perhaps rethink his warmongering ways, at least when it comes to McCain.

If whougonnacall stops posting, we know that hes John McCain. Get better, buddy.

You can always count on McCain to tow the NeoCon , interventionist and anti-Iran line.

"Gop Senator apologizes for McCain Tantrum at Syrian Christian Leader meeting."

Hell-bent on arming opposition forces in Syria—despite strong evidence that they’re run by Islamic terrorists—John McCain displayed behavior unbecoming of a United States Senator during a recent meeting with Syrian Christian leaders touring Capitol Hill.

The delegation of Syrian clergy came to Washington to raise awareness among lawmakers of the growing crisis among the region’s minority Christian community. Christians make up about 10% of the Syrian population and they are being targeted and ruthlessly murdered by radical elements of the rebel forces, according to the visiting church officials. They say the media and human rights groups in the west have been largely silent on the ordeal of the Christians in Syria.

A number of churches have been destroyed or burned, children were killed when rebels fired mortar rockets at an Armenian Christian school in Damascus and countless others have been abducted by Islamic fighters, the Syrian delegation reveals in a statement published by the research group, Westminster Institute, that brought them to Washington. Eleven nuns have also been abducted and are still in captivity and two bishops are still missing after getting kidnapped during a humanitarian mission.

But Senator McCain, an Arizona Republican, evidently doesn’t want to hear negative stories about the rebels he’s working to arm. So he stormed out of a closed-door meeting with the Syrian clergy officials last week. Held in the Senate Arms Services Committee meeting room, the reunion also included senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Graham is a Republican and the rest are Democrats.

McCain marched into the committee room yelling, according to a high-level source that attended the meeting, and quickly stormed out. “He was incredibly rude,” the source told Judicial Watch “because he didn’t think the Syrian church leaders should even be allowed in the room.” Following the shameful tantrum McCain reentered the room and sat briefly but refused to make eye contact with the participants, instead ignoring them by looking down at what appeared to be random papers.

The outburst was so embarrassing that Senator Graham, also an advocate of U.S. military intervention in Syria, apologized for McCain’s disturbing outburst. “Graham actually apologized to the group for McCain’s behavior,” according to the source, who sat through the entire meeting. “It was truly unbelievable.”

Crazy that an American is mad at halting the support of terrorists. Wonder how much soros pays him.

McCaincer wants another war before he dies, what a surprise

John McCain as a senator had jump the shark as soon as the Cold War was over. He can't change his mentality to reflect on the modern world. The "moderate" rebels in Syria are basically Al-Qaeda affliates, and has been for several years.

It's a terrible thing to say, but I don't feel any sympathy for hI'm having brain cancer. He destroyed thousands of families around through his warmongering ways in the past two decades. Hard to feel sorry for a man with so much blood on his hands.

Yet, he's the kind of psychopath you guys call "presidential".

What are the numbers of these supposedly good rebels in that pocket of desert in the south near the border of Jordan and Iraq?
