So the Mayor of Tangier , a small island off the coast of Virginia, expressed his concern to Trump on erosion threatening the island , and wanted the federal gov. to do something fast.

Trump's reply: " He said we shouldn’t worry about rising sea levels "

" your island has been there for hundreds of years, and I believe your island will be there for hundreds more
"

This Mayor is very pro Trump and about 87% of the inhabitants voted for Trump.

Every year the island is losing about 16 feet of shoreline.

This reminds of when the right was making a huge fuss about that Dem congressman Hank Johnson wondering if Guam could tip over. I am not seeing the right making a big deal here....

How is the government supposed to do anything when the relevant departments are not even staffed?

I'd be surprised if Trump knew what erosion was

fake news. erosion only happens at golf courses. everyone knows that.

While 391 votes doesn't sound like many, he'd have a lot of wealthy benefactors who own shore line property everywhere. A property once worth a lot of money will be good for mooring to if we're not careful.

In trumps defence he may have meant the settlement had been there for hundreds of years that and erosion isn't necessarily climate change related.

How can you even stop that from happening?
Giant rocks, least that's what's used around here to prevent the water from bashing into the shoreline and causing further erosion. It was threatening a bunch of rich people homes so of course government stepped in

The Army Corps of engineers is working on it.

I'd imagine , as the poster above me mentioned: large rocks. Also artifical berms and dikes like Holland has.

I think I would move the fuck off that island.

Depends on the cost of building barriers . I can't imagine it would be cheaper to hold the sea back than just having people move.

Just wait until a real hurricane sweeps through that place. It will be costly.

Here's an interesting little tidbit from theweek article

During his CNN interview, Eskridge said he loved Trump like he was family, and Tangier Island is a "Trump island" that values "the military, and Israel, and religious liberties."

What has Israel got to do with anything. Soo many conservatives are tripping over themselves to be first in line to please the Israel lobby/Israel supporters.

According to Trump : because this island has survived for centuries, it is going to be fine for hundreds of yearts to come so no need to worry. As if things staing the same is a given.
