He only "controls" it because the "B-Side" won't walk away from the table when its brought up in the negotiation. You'd be surprised how often those issues are brought up at almost every sit-down for a fight. They all do it and come to a mutual agreement. It's part of the deal of putting on a show.

Ok, throw all of the pre fight nonsense out of the window. This is a man who took the middleweight championship after refusing to actually fight at the middleweight limit, before losing the title to another man who had never fought at middleweight, in a fight that was not contested at middleweight either. In my eyes, that behavior suuuuuuucks

Too many times the mistake is made around here that guys have to fight at the upper limit of the samctioned weight class for it to be legit. You cant be further from the truth. The definition as stated by all boxing commissions is, (in MW for this discussion), Middleweight is a fight between two boxers that must be at the minimum 155lbs and UNDER 161lbs. Anything in between is classified and conidered a Middleweight bout. I dont see what the problem is. If both guys agree to what their limit should be within that range, its still a MW bout, and theres no complaining to be made.

Weird, because all the mw champions before him came in, and were contracted to fight at 160 lbs. Cotto insisted upon a catchweight at 155. 155 was the LIMIT for the middleweight title bout. This is not coming under weight, this is guys fighting for the middleweight belt at a pound higher than the junior mw limit.

Its still a MW bout. Whats the problem? Are you saying Cotto's belt wasnt legit? He won the belt at the MW limit. I really dont see why this "sucks" so badly, its 5-6 fucking pounds, and it didnt diminish his opponent any less who actually beat him anyways.
Whats your point? Boxing is a competitive sport and in competitive sport the whole idea of taking advantage of any advantage you can get or have, is paramount to being successful in any competitive sport. Doesnt make Cotto a pussy because he chose to exercise a perceived advantage.

He took the belt in a 155 catcheweight. If it's only 5 lbs, why is it so hard to for him to actually fight at 160?

Again....in competitive sports one must attack any perceived advantage they can get.

I dont think that should allow someone to dictate all terms because of a goddamn bargaining position. Cotto used to talk about the legacy of boxing, then wins the MW title without ever fighting at middleweight. I would call that horseshit, not tactics.

At that range? a pound from superwelter? Why fight for the middleweight title a single pound north of 154?

Youre pretty salty, why does it matter so much to you? Whats the message youre trying to convey? Cotto won his title at the 160 lb limit from Martinez...
