many LL practitioners will hang this guy for this article.

but from a grappling point of view, LL its pretty much carlsons gracie jiu jitsu style, im not saying carlos launched anything, im saying their approach to grappling is the same.

they take much pride on leg lock though, and I think back in the days it was a big difference, now days, jiu jtsu guys probably have the best leg lock game in the grappling world.. its just a matter of numbers, there are more jiu jitsu guys training leg locks than any other style of grappling in the world, specially different entries etc.

Luta Livre's parentage is from catch wrestling, and the modern expression of the art and pure lineage is through Mestre Tatu. Carlson was friendly with the LL practitioners and invited them to cross train with them. Brazilian judoka and historian Elton Silva will soon release his book on Tatu which will be the most accurate account of Luta Livre history. Certainly much more so than Rorian or Roberto Leitao's claims.....

Also, the picture of the fighters in gi pants with belts and no tops depicts the standard style adopted in the 1980s when the LL belt standards were formally introduced across the board. The belt system was introduced by Carlis Brunocilla, heir to Tatu's lineage and gi pants were used for their practicality ie cheap and easy to source although some notable practitioners from this era wore short shorts anyway
