Even if we take the physical completely out of it, it'd be interesting to see which sex uses institutional power to sexually coerce subordinates more.

Obviously the total numbers are going to be skewed for men. Upper management and other positions of power have far more men than women. And then there's the old image of middle-aged businessmen hitting up strip clubs or escort services or something. Don't really hear a lot of middle-aged women doing the same. This kinda suggests that powerful men are more interested in sexual escapades than powerful women.

But I'd willing to wait to see some sort of formal study on the subject though.

Its going to be skewed because, as you yourself point out, they're over-represented in management positions in general but that's changing and within specific fields it may already be the case that the situation has reversed. I would bet that men would be more likely to abuse their power in that way but science has a way of uncovering counter-intuitive truths so I would exercise caution in speculation.

I understand the sentiment, but I don't want to get back to the point where some women feel too scared or ashamed to come forward about abuse or harassment. I'm reminded of the recent statement made by Denhollander at Larry Nassar's trial. She had to go through an awful lot of bullshit before people started taking her seriously, and I'm afraid that raking this woman over coals, regardless of shitty she is if these allegations are true, is going to make it even harder for women to come forward in the future than it has been in the past (and it was already pretty difficult).

If anything, I'd think the standard being applied to her would make it easier for women who've been harassed to come forward - a universal standard that applies equally to men and women makes it easier to come forward, because it become the norm to speak out when you've been harassed.

Basically, I think women who've been harassed will be on the side of the man who made the claim, not on Garcia's side, and will see another example of a harasser being dealt with as encouragement to come forward themselves.

My worry is the vindictive nature of the whole thing discouraging them. That this woman might deserve what she gets wouldn't result in a better atmosphere for everyone, I don't think. As the saying goes, an eye for an eye makes the world go blind. You might be right that women who have been harassed will side against Garcia, but I don't think they'd feel very comfortable with the reactions of all the men looking for members of the metoo movement to have their comeuppance.

If, following an investigation, it looks reasonably certain that she did this and the court of public opinion decides to hold her ruthlessly to account, you won't hear a peep out of me.

I had to do a doubletake when I first read the article because I actually know the guy's family (same hometown). My two cents. I don't see any reason to disbelieve the story. It's got a corroborating source (even though more would have been nice, but nothing you can do about that really).

The only aspect of the story that gave me pause is his old boss encouraging him to come forward. His boss comes from a pretty well known political family in California, one that happens to be notorious for sleaziness (the boss' dad and uncle both served in the legislature and both were indicted). So while I believe the story, I doubt his boss encouraged him to come forward out of the goodness of his heart.

cant remember exactly how they went but i saw 2 lately. one where a guy in a skit had his shirt off and and she made some comment about that and another where she was laying in bed and she made a comment about him in his underwear. i dont think its a big deal, but it certainly would in this day in age not have gone over the other way. sorry i cant describe them better but i forgot. i just remember thinking how that would totally be labelled "sexist"

An investigation of Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia is being reopened after a former legislative staffer appealed an earlier finding that failed to back up his claim that the Bell Gardens Democrat sexually harassed him.

Assembly officials announced May 17 that Daniel Fierro’s allegation that Garcia drunkenly groped him at an Assembly softball game in Sacramento in 2014 “could not be substantiated” but that Garcia was being removed from committee assignments for using “vulgar language.”

Two weeks later, Fierro appealed the finding, saying potentially key witnesses weren’t interviewed.

Unlike Chris Hardwick's girlfriend, he actually filed a formal complaint at the time, and has third-party witness support for his accusation.

Agreed , I think most of the time the " nobody will listen " is because of people that are close to the situations natural inclination to protect themselves rather than some omnipresent systemic conspiracy to throw vulnerable women under the bus.
