Opinion Lawrence Lessig on JRE. The only problem we should be talking about

Of course. But not the advertising component.

Media would report on the candidates that rise through the citizen voting site. You afraid they'll be even more bias than covering just the two parties they cover now?

I'm afraid that the media would drive who ascended on the citizen voting site, even more so than they already do.

That the candidates maintain at least some messege control through that advertising.

Something struck me the other day........I think it was a bullet!! Ayooooo!!!

Too soon

Lessig certainly hit the nail on the head about the necessity of coming at this with bipartisan support. Al Gore owning climate change set both parties into political ruts we won't get out of anytime soon.

Everybody wants to bitch but nobody wants to commit to a plan. Could be because they either like the money or like the influence they think theirs can buy.

I'd pass an Amendment that created a site for citizens to create voter accounts and political positions would be job offers posted. Folks could apply and all campaigning would be done there. News would cover what they cover. Still have elections at physical polling stations or ballots through the mail, but paid advertising would be illegal. I'd also have nationally funded wifi to help facilitate participation in the early selection process.

I’ve always felt when it came to issues like Citizen United or bills that benefitted people in government that it should be the people who vote on the issue and not their representative who would benefit directly from its passing. Just like states votes on props or bonds we should be able to vote on these types of measures.

I'm a huge fan of Lawrence Lessig. If people knew who he was, he might have been president in 2016.

Nothing in this country can be fixed until we fix this issue.

To paraphrase Lessig.

"We keep talking about what we are going to do when we get to Atlantic City. Go gambling, dancing, get something to eat, see a show. Meanwhile the car we need to get to Atlantic City has no engine, and 4 flat tires".

Money in politics is a greater threat to this nation than communism, fascism, Climate change, the rise of the machines, HC costs, our deficit, ect.

You can't begin to address any of these issues until we do something about money in politics.

Discuss.......

I gave him a chance, but this guy is a bleeding heart lib, and therefore not credible. For Christ sake, he gave John Mccain credit for trying to root out corruption when he was one of the most corrupt mother fuckers in the Senate. You should rename this thread to "How long can you last?" I made it 27 minutes.

"Remove money from politics" - go to slogan of every naive activist.

Removing money from politics is like removing money from charity. It's just a fallacy. Governments can't function without money. As long as you have government, you will also have moeny in politics.

TBH I don’t that that would be Lessig’s Slogan anyhow. Maybe something more like “tweak the flow of money to make it less corrupting”. Not very pithy but more accurate, I think

The people that make the laws are corrupted. Problem.

Globalism is the biggest threat to humanity.

So his brilliant idea is to get money and corruption out of politics? lol. Gee whiz, what a maverick this guy is. What a thinker lol

The system is FUBAR, but the ideas people come up with to fix it are always moronic.

Trouble is that both parties literally profit enormously from the status quo.

Not really. They're not like living off the money. It's all going to a zero-sum competition. It's hugely wasteful, but the beneficiaries of it are not the politicians, and I'd bet that 90%-plus of them would say that the part of the job they hate the most is fundraising. The people who sell ads and make ads are the ones you'd expect to like the system; not the people who buy ads.

The problems won’t be solved until mankind once again humbles himself. In other words, the people full of certainty and arrogance need step aside and let the humble and honest through.

What a bullshit socialist Berniebot delusion/lie.

Mick doesn't see the fossil fuel industry creating any political obstructions to the US addressing climate change and implementing correctives. The same way the NRA has no effect on gun law legislation.

I just listened to this on my drive to Vegas. Awesome interview, this dude is spot on even if he leans left.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.

How many states have ballot initiatives? Not sure what the line is when it comes to Constitutionally limiting spending, but that mechanism exists. It's why we're seeing what we're seeing with marijuana. People just started to go around their legislatures/representatives.

There's a bigger problem than corruption. The real problem in the US is that half the country hates the other half.

Lessig at 16 minutes talking about a anti-corruption bill, that of all people Nancy Pelosi is sponsoring. Sounded promising. No one has heard of it outside of the beltway. Thanks media.

I've heard it repeatedly mentioned in the media as the cornerstone of the Democrat platform when the new Representatives are sworn in for the House.
