Lmao at Tony subbing Khabib. Tony was taken down at will and full mounted by staph Lee. He was dominated on the ground until Lee gassed due to his illness. Moreover, Lee has shown exceptionally poor posture and submission defense while staying in Tony's guard. Khabib is not going to gas and his sub defense is on another level and is actually proven against world level grapplers. Most of the fight will take place on the ground due to Tony having sub par TDD, which also favors Khabib as he will be able to fight at his own pace from the top. People keep parroting how Tony has endless Cardio, but cardio is not going to be the deciding factor in this fight, because even though Khabib expends a lot of energy on his takedowns and can slow down in the championship rounds, he will still be on top of Tony. You cannot push the pace off your back, so Tony's ability to drive an impressive pace against his opponents in later rounds on the feet is not going to help him.
It is a good indicator of potential ability and success on the ground. Obviously, I don't really care for the standup part in this discussion. Securing takedowns is also a problem pure BJJ specialists can and usually do face, but Khabib has good enoguh wrestling to get pretty much anyone to the ground in the LW division. You've also said that Khabib is not a pure BJJ adept and that's a good point, because he does not suffer from the common "no takedowns" weakness of pure BJJ adepts, but Khabib has rolled with world level brown and blackbelts while Tony was still a purple belt, IIRC, and the most valuable takeaways here are the facts that Khabib has stellar sub defense and is capable of passing the guard of high level grapplers.
IMO, after considering all of this one more time I'm more confident than ever in my previous assessment that Tony has absolutely nothing on the ground for Khabib.
We see different things I guess. I've seen Khabib slow noticeably in both of his last 2 fights. I'm not parroting anyone, I mostly have posted in the MMA betting sub forum over the last couple years and I was among the first to point out Tony's cardio advantage. You simply saying "Cardio won't be a factor" doesn't make that true. If Khabib slows like he did vs Iaquinta or like he did in rd 3 vs Conor he is going to get carved up. Neither of those guys have Tony's cardio so couldn't make Khabib pay for being tired (they were exhausted themselves). Tony can do serious damage off his back and even if you believe Khabib will avoid it early by passing to half guard, etc. that doesn't mean Khabib will have the energy to do those things later on (again, as evidenced by how we've seen him slow down). If he's way more tired than Tony but in Tony's guard, its gonna look like the end of Tony's fight with Lee.
