I've heard you should keep your lead hand flexed and your rear loose. anyone know the reason for this? I assume its for the jab and parrying. But are there any other reasons? Does anyone disagree with this principle?

keep it loose, Its a fight you don't have to look ripped. Its faster to keep it loose and tense your fist at the last moment. try punching 10 times with a tense arm and 10 times with a loose arm ( like throwing a rock) and you'll see that its way faster with a loose arm and it also generates more power.

Not to mention keeping muscles tense the entire time will drain your gas tank unnecessarily early.

Never heard of this. Even good (not shitty) Karate teaches you to be relaxed but hard on contact.

Both loose when they aren't doing anything.

Keeping the arms tense is objectively wrong.
