Just make eye pokes an automatic deduction or DQ already.

This problem is solved by making the 1st poke, accidental or not, a point deduction and a repeat offense an automatic DQ. Then you will almost never see an eye poke because fighters will train not to do them.

In judo, hand attacks to the lower body (aka, double legs, single legs, etc) a legal form of attack and feint and a huge part of many people's game from a legitimate part of the game to instant DQ on the first incident.

A lot of people thought there would be a lot of DQs from accidental and incidental movement, but at the highest levels of competition, it never happened because competitors started training specifically not to do these things they used to do all the time.

Make eye pokes an instant DQ offense and you won't ever see another eye poke again
because no one will shoving their hands into their opponents' faces with their fingers splayed out.

Just make this rule for repeat offenders/abusers. So basically just use this rule for Jones.

Warning>> Point>>>DQ

Regardless if it's accidental or intentional.

Why?

Don't see how it makes any difference whether it's accidental or not. It's a foul, and does the same damage intentional or not.

you need to watch more mma then. hes nowhere near the only guy with repeated eyepokes.

this is why the commission wont take this kind of thought process seriously.

or, just allow eye pokes. I would love to see jbj finished by LEGAL eye pokes!

Two free eye-gouges seems to be the custom. Definitely should have been a point on the second one. Props to Matt for trying to fight through it.

no shit, chuck lidell lived off of them in the UFC for years.

Mitrione should've just poked Browne back. If the refs are so hesitant about taking points away for fouls, then fighters have no choice but to return the fouls.

You are not making any point by saying "It's a Foul", there are many types of fouls, and those don't get automatic deductions either.

Regardless if it's accidental or intentional.

Warnings should happen in the locker room prior to the fight. It's not like they only find out what's a foul when they occur.

Again, why a warning? They already know the rules

I think if its a one time thing give a warning then take a point, if its a true accidental eye poke caused by change of levels or such.
Otherwise take a point especially If the guy is pawing with open hands or punching with open hands
Hell I think that distance guaging with hands open should be disallowed if they cant stop this.

They need to roll out those gloves that Rogan is always advertising. It's only a matter of time before someone gets Winkeljohn'd in the octagon.

No. No warnings. Automatic point deduction, period.

Eyepokes will disappear overnight.

Same with fence grabbing. Make it an automatic point deduction and you will never see another fence grab again.

Competitors in sports push boundaries with fouls all of the time because they know that there are grey areas.

A warning is a complete non-consequence to a foul, which allows unethical fighters 1-2 fouls before there is a real consequence if at all.

Yeah, no thanks.

Like communism, it sounds good in theory, but it would not be very practical.

Something like that would be abused terribly.

There are already cases of fighters pretending to be eye poked.

You would see soccer flopping shenanigans.

Also, does anyone have a picture? I was working during this fight, so I didn't get to see the eye.

His eye looked OK (not bleeding or obvious swelling) after the eyepokes, which doesn't mean much other than it not being the worst ever. Postfight, after eating a right...
