One of my gym mates who is judo black belt but white in BJJ, told me he has to compete in Blue belt (due to judo black belt) in upcoming bjj comp.

Is this common and does it applicable to other comps? What if you don't declare it, is that way they can find out?

he doesn't have to compete at blue, he's just not allowed to compete at white.

Good question. Does not seem fair to have a judo black belt competing against regular white belts though...

He shouldn't compete in white. Judo black is pretty advance grappler in terms of stand up and should be decent enough on the ground to beat a white easily. Remember a white belt has probably 1 year or less in most cases of training. A judo blackbelt probably has 3+ years of training. Though mainly stand up, I am sure he is proficient on the ground in back control, hon kesa, and mount that for a normal white belt it will be too much.

That's a good thing. It makes the white belt division more fair. Imagine if you were a white belt set for his first tournament and you had to go against a Judo black belt.

Hmm i think it's right.

It just happened to me actually, I'm a white belt, and there's this big guy (nicknamed the black bear), he's a white belt as well, and he doesn't practice too much nowadays because he just had 2 kids in the past 2 years.

but before that he was a very good judoka... we are going to a local competition next week, and he told him to sign up for blue belt because otherwise he wouldn't be fair for the others (and also wouldn't be useful for him).

now, i probably have more bjj experience than him... but he always kicks my ass, and not only because of his strenght, so i figure that blue belt makes sense. I also think that people with significant wrestling experience shouldn't compete in white belt.

That's the ibjjf rule. College wrestlers and judo black belts can't compete at white. Also pro mma fighters.

It's not a free pass to compete at blue, either. Just means you have to wait until you earn your blue. Which probably shouldn't take terribly long, given your previous grappling experience.

makes sense. Should be the other way in Judo as well. I made it clear i was a blue belt in BJJ at a judo torney but they put me with whitebelts anyways. It goes without saying i got first place and it was not even fun.

Judo really need to make it more challenging getting to brown/blackbelts. An average blue belt in BJJ is on the same level as most brownbelts and even some fresh blackbelts in Judo.

He should not, he could hurt someone.
I'm judo black and Brown in jiu jitsu.

Actually just started judo(blue belt in bjj) and was holding my own with one of the black belt instructors and tapped another guy who was a green belt(not sure how good a green belt is supposed to be). Note: we weren't trying to kill each other or anything so I'm sure he was better than that

Also havent grappled in a year due to moving and almost died from getting so hot in the gi so I kinda gassed

Same situation as my friend. He's a black belt at judo and competed one time in bjj and the staff said he should compete in Blue

It depending of what blacl belts you are talking about you go to Japan and try it.

Prior my initiation in jiu jitsu I fought many Brazilian jiu jitsu all ranks include in mma I learn how to respect their style but making statement that bjj blue will beating judo black well very hard.

I don't think it's right that he wants to sand bag and compete against white belts being a black belt in judo .

That's like a Mma fighter with 20 pro fights wanting to compete at white belt or beginner in no gi.

They may not officially be belted in bjj but come on

If it were up to me, I'd say a fresh Judo BB should be as good on the ground as a fresh BJJ blue. And his level standing should be akin to a BJJ fresh purple's level on the ground.

One of my teammates was a judo black belt and he didnt compete in BJJ tournaments until he was a blue belt. I don't know if it's because he wasnt allowed as a white belt, but it's possible. He destroyed mostly all the other white belts but it got more even once he went blue. That's in class where we mainly started on the ground.

I remember in his tournaments he would just throw everybody and let the back up and do it again. Nobody could take him down yet so many refused to pull guard, likely because they wanted on top. One of the tournaments i saw him in the guy he fought in the finals just pulled guard and eventually tapped him...but he's won a lot of tournaments at blue. Last i checked he still had a blue belt after almost 2 years. Our instructer is very stingy about promotions so im guessing his BJJ technique hasnt advanced above blue belt and he still relies heavily on his judo.

Disagree about making it harder to earn a black belt in judo.

The black belt in judo means that you have mastered the basics. The blue belt in jiu jitsu means the same thing.

sounds fair, i mean hes gonna at least know more than your average wb

Why would your friend want to compete against white belts? That's like Lebron James playing basketball against high school players.

He should have to. My first comp as a white belt, the winner of my division was a judo black belt. He waxed everyone.
