Pretty funny but true.

This technology is no joke. They can literally create any 'news' story they want with anyone they want saying anything they want them to.

Very true and this is a good way to present it sorta like President Trump declaring war on North Korea or announcing he is to begin nuclear bombing of Syria or some crazy like that causing huge ramifications.

Cliffs? Anyone?

Fucked up both ways because on one had, you can fake what people say and on the other people can claim that genuine speeches are fake. What a shitty invention.

Seriously.

There's gotta be some way of knowing though, right?

You can kind of see through this current version they're using, but in another 5 or 10 years, you'd imagine that they'd have it perfected.

Correct this is the very earliest version of the technology I hear that Google's Deepmind technology is a lot further along but Google not making it public. The other thing they are doing with Deepmind is taking 1 to 2 mins of audio and replicating it nearly perfectly to mimic any speech or song "Yes it can sing a song that person it's copying has never performed.".

Can't wait for that new corporate, robot Nirvana album, featuring Tupac.

It's not that close just yet. In 10 years we'll be laughing our asses off at what we think looks "close" today. It's still full on Uncanny Valley. If you'll pardon the tranalogy, it's like how Bailey Jay used to be scary-close to looking like a hot woman, but now she doesn't come close to passing. And all of us feel a little bit ashamed of that.

Good for porn though. Or so I hear.

Ian: Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.
