Dragonlord's Review of JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2
(No Spoilers)

Bottom Line: Offers the same stylish gun-fu gunplay, gleefully brutal car carnage and opulent criminal underworld setting that made the first film so fun to watch.

eR7lAh6.jpg

John Wick: Chapter 2 doesn't waste time and opens immediately in the middle of a high-octane car chase scene. John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on a mission to retrieve his Mustang from the first film which is now in the possession of Russian mob boss Abram Tasarov (Peter Stormare). What follows is a series of incredible car stunts which culminates in a crazy action sequence that literally throws John out of the car.

It isn't long before John is approached by an old associate Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio) who collects on John's marker for one last job. John goes to Rome and squares off against some of the world's deadliest killers.

Chad Stahelski returns as the sole director for the sequel and even without his partner David Leitch, he doesn't seem to have lost a beat. There is a misstep though during the early fight scene when the camera focused on a wide shot of the action with little to no cuts. Though it's appreciated they're trying out something new, it didn't quite work well in this instance as the hand-to-hand combat seemed a little clunky. Thankfully it was just this one instance and everything was back to top form afterwards.

The first John Wick was a revenge film with righteous intentions and a surprisingly romantic undertone. In this sequel, John's motivation, aside from self-preservation, is less than noble which makes it a bit harder to fully root for his cause. John wrecks havoc against his enemies but it just lacks the same gusto the audience feel, not unlike the first film where you cheer when the deplorable villains get their comeuppance.

Keanu Reeves gives an exemplary action performance where his extensive tactical firearms and martial arts training paid off big time to transform him into a believable bad-ass action hero. His line delivery is still wooden though.

Two characters that stood out the most in this sequel are Ares (Ruby Rose) and Cassian (Common). Ares is Santino's mute security enforcer. Ruby just has this compelling screen presence and has a great subdued chemistry with John. Common plays Cassian, an assassin seeking vengeance upon John. Cassian has a lot of great action showdown scenes with John including a very comical exchange in the subway station.

Reuniting with Keanu for the first time since the Matrix trilogy, Laurence Fishburne plays the Bowery King (sort of like the head of the hobo assassins guild). Though the reunion is amusing, Laurence's role was not that memorable, preferring to ham it up than playing it cool.

Returning for the sequel are fan-favorites Charon (Lance Reddick), Winston (Ian McShane) and Aurelio (John Leguizamo) who were all enjoyable here. Special mention to Peter Serafinowicz who was very entertaining as the refined arms dealer.

A few negatives: John not honoring his marker when Santino calls him on it seems disreputable on the character. And having Winston remind him of his obligation is another minus on John. Another complaint was John easily gets inside Gianna's coronation party and into her room but doesn't retrace his steps and goes out the more riskier route.

Fans of the first film will not be disappointed with John Wick: Chapter 2. The sequel offers the same stylish gun-fu gunplay, beautifully brutal automotive action and more of the allurig, opulent criminal underworld that made the original film such a success.

Ian McShane Reveals New Details for JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2

John-Wick-Keanu-Reeves-041416-Dragonlord.jpg

In the 2014 sleeper hit John Wick, Ian McShane (Deadwood) played the mysterious and enigmatic owner of the Continental Hotel, a boutique hotel that caters to assassins. He didn't have a lot of screen time in first film, but he made quite an impression. Will we see more of him in the upcoming sequel, John Wick: Chapter 2?

"Well, I’m kind of the only one left from the first one," McShane told Entertainment Weekly. "This is same kind of premise. It’s not like two years later, but pretty soon after the first one. Keanu [Reeves] is a great guy. They got this terrific Italian kid, Riccardo Scamarcio, who plays the chief villain, who’s excellent, and we have a lot of stuff together."

"And the guy who directs it, Chad Stahelski, is really smart," McShane said. "He’s been Keanu’s stunt guy for [nearly] 20 years and he’s studied muay-thai. He’s got every stunt man who’s available for [this film]. The action looks like it was done by somebody out of Hong Kong instead of Hollywood which I always think is a great sight."

"Keanu gets a new dog. But yes, it’s about what comes on him after that," he offered. "It’s all about the assassin’s code, if you like. He’s killed a Russian gangster and now there’s a contract out on him, so it’s a continuation. I loved the first one. This could be even better than the first."

Keanu Reeves Reveals Details on Laurence Fishburne's Character for JOHN WICK 2

John-Wick-2-Set-Reeves-Fishburne-030116-Dragonlord.jpg

“For us it was just what is the next chapter? What is the continuation of this story?" Keanu Reeves explains. "Opening up the world – the underground world. The world behind the world in terms of the assassins. Kind of evolving the action – if the first one was a black belt, then this one is third degree black belt. It’s such a fun project and a great character.”

Reeves is joined by fellow Matrix alumni, Laurence Fishburne for John Wick: Chapter Two. The reunion might get ugly, though, seeing as Reeves' description of the new character sounds like a possible new foe.

“Laurence has this fantastic role as a character in the Underworld called The Bowery King” Reeves says. “He plays such a great character in the piece and he brings of course humour, intelligence, charisma and fascination – he’s such an incredible actor and it was a pleasure to work with him again."

"[Peter] Stormare has more of a cameo in it but again he brings such fun and mystery and this mixture of groundedness and the surreal," Reeves says of the other franchise newcomer

Ruby Rose and Common round out the cast with returning cast members Bridget Moynahan and Ian McShane. John Wick 2 is set to hit theaters on February 10, 2017.

Ian McShane to Reprise His Role as Winston in JOHN WICK 2

Ian-McShane-John-Wick-102615a-Dragonlord.jpg

The Continental, the hotel for assassins, will be open for business in Lionsgate's John Wick 2. Ian McShane is set to reprise his role as Winston, the owner of the boutique hotel that caters to hit-person community with its discretion, on-call doctors and no-killing rule. The hotel and its steely-eyed owner, who lethally enforces the rules, proved popular with geek audiences.

Keanu Reeves is back as Wick, the hitman who in the first movie was brought back from retirement when his dog, a gift from his recently deceased wife, was killed by lowlifes - he went on a vengeance-fueled journey back to his old employer. Common just joined the sequel as one of the chief antagonists. Chad Stahelski is directing the movie, which will shoot in New York and Italy. Basil Iwanyk is producing.

McShane appeared on the most recent season of Showtime's Ray Donovan and recently wrapped shooting season six of Game of Thrones. He also stars in Dr. Thorne, a period drama from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes and ITV that will air in 2016.

Common to Play Villain Hitman in JOHN WICK 2 Starring Keanu Reeves

Common-John-Wick-102615-Dragonlord.jpg

Common will star opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick 2, Lionsgate's sequel to its surprise 2014 action hit. The first Wick saw Reeves as an ex-hitman who is forced to dole out some retribution when gangsters break into his home, beat him up and kill his dog. He re-enters the tangled underworld of assassins he left behind and shows everyone that' he's still not to be trifled with.

Plot details for the new one are being kept muzzled but Common will be the movies' chief villain, a head of security for a female crime lord. Chad Stahelski is directing the movie, which is due to begin shooting this week. (The first one was co-directed by Stahelski and David Leitch but Leitch is now prepping to shooting spy thriller Coldest City with Charlize Theron and James McAvoy.)

Common, who appeared in Entourage and Liam Neeson action movie Run All Night, will next be seen in Warner Bros.'s high-profile comic book movie, Suicide Squad, with Will Smith and Jared Leto. He recently wrapped Barbershop 3 and is prepping for The Wiz Live!, a live television production of the 1975 musical The Wiz that counts Queen Latifah, Ne-yo and Mary J. Blige among its cast members.

David Leitch Leaves JOHN WICK 2 to Direct Charlize Theron in THE COLDEST CITY

David-Leitch-John-Wick-100315-Dragonlord.jpg

After leaving John Wick 2 to focus on another project, sources have confirmed that director David Leitch has picked the Focus spy thriller The Coldest City, starring Charlize Theron, as his next film. Kurt Johnstad penned the pic about a spy in the late 1980s dealing with the aftermath of the murder of an underground MI6 officer.

Leitch was co-directing John Wick 2 with Chad Stahelski, but after production was set for a November shoot in Budapest and Berlin, Leitch decided it best to let Stahelski direct John Wick 2 on his own so that he could focus on The Coldest City. Focus acquired the film at the Cannes Film Festival and at the time Leitch and Stahelski were on board to direct, but now Leitch will helm on his own.

The two directors burst onto the scene after last year's John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, exceeded expectations at the box office. The two are also attached to direct Cowboy Ninja Viking for Universal starring Chris Pratt.

Chad Stahelski to Direct JOHN WICK 2 Without David Leitch

Chad-Stahelski-John-Wick-092415-Dragonlord.jpg

Since production started on a second installment of Lionsgate's fan-favorite John Wick franchise, here's what they've been saying about the creative team: "John Wick starred Keanu Reeves, directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and written by Derek Kolstad, all of whom will return for the sequel."

Today, Collider reveals that while it's true they'll all be back, the configuration is somewhat different; with Leitch apparently directing an unrelated project on his own, Stahelski will take on John Wick 2 while Leitch consults and serves as an executive producer.

While you might not know their names except as the people behind John Wick, you've definitely seen their work in films like Speed Racer, The Bourne Legacy, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, and tons of others. On some the films mentioned they did the stunts, and on some they directed second unit (which means they directed a lot of the action). In addition, they run 87eleven, which is the premiere action design team in Hollywood. When an actor needs to be trained for an action role, they get sent to 87eleven.

JOHN WICK 2 Begins Filming This Fall with Keanu Reeves

John-Wick-Reeves-Leitch-Stahelski-Dragonlord.jpg

Keanu Reeves is back! Or, at least he will be back this fall when filming starts on John Wick 2, the sequel to the indie action flick that quickly achieved cult status. Thunder Road Pictures confirmed that Reeves and company would be shooting the sequel this fall, with directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski returning, as well as screenwriter Derek Kolstad.

As for what we can expect from John Wick 2, according to Stahelski and Leitch, they were in development on the second film as far back as February. Here's Stahelski's take on it:

"We have ideas for days and without blinking twice we know we can outdo the action from the original. It's the matter of story and how much you like the character. That's always the most important. If there's great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn't have charisma you're not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it's Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name, you love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we'll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome."

Lionsgate on Monday made it official: John Wick 2 is in the works, with Summit Entertainment to release the Keanu Reeves revenge pic and Lionsgate International to start shopping the sequel at Cannes. John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch are developing a follow-up to the 2014 breakout hit, with Reeves and screenwriter Derek Kolstad also returning for the sequel.

The film will be produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk, who produced the first film. "With such tremendous fan and critical support for John Wick, we knew that there was still so much more of this story to tell," said Jason Constantine, president acquisitions and co-productions at Lionsgate, in a statement.

The original movie grossed $43 million domestically and $35 million internationally following its October launch. John Wick also starred Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo and Willem Dafoe. Dragonlord's Review of JOHN WICK
(No Spoilers)

Bottom Line: Keanu Reeves returns triumphantly to the action genre in this lean, stylish, revenge thriller brimming with slick action choreography, precise balletic gunplay and a rich, enthralling criminal underworld the characters inhabit in.

John-Wick-Keanu-Reeves-110214-Dragonlord.jpg

This simple revenge tale about a retired hitman (Keanu Reeves) going on a bloody warpath after Russian mobsters killed his dog, a parting gift from his dying wife, would have been your typical humdrum B-movie schlock but in the hands of directors and famed stunt coordinators David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, John Wick is transformed into the year's most surprisingly wickedly bad-ass action flick. After a marked absence from the genre, Reeves is in excellent form and the character fits perfectly with his reticent demeanor.

The action is a nice mix of martial arts and gunplay - you have the grace of martial arts, but then the bang of the gun. It's a great throwback to John Woo's signature gun-fu combat. Praise goes to the filmmakers for wanting to do long takes, not a lot of cuts and have the action happen in front of you. With a steady blend of gun-fu, judo, jiu-jitsu and, even introducing a new combat style, gun-drifting, Leitch and Stahelski expertly deliver one action highlight after another in a near-nonstop thrill ride.

The film's criminal underworld is so layered and colorful and governed with their own unique set of rules and codes. Services are paid in gold coins, eerily reminiscent of the Hades ferryman from Greek mythology. New York's Continental Hotel provides safe haven for assassins with the rule that no business can be conducted on premises. A big part of the charm in John Wick is the eclectic supporting cast and spotting some of the recognizable actors in small but distinguishable roles. Alfie Allen, who plays a simpering, spoiled brat, is as despicable here as he is in Game of Thrones. Adrianne Palicki plays a sexy contract killer and provides a good case why the actress should headline a solo action movie.

The techno music used in the club scene was great but the inclusion of KALEIDA's song "Think" in was just sublime.

"People keep asking if I'm back - yeah, I'm thinking I'm back," Wick at one point says. And coupled with the action drama John Rain TV series on the way, Reeves certainly is back with a vengeance.

Rating: 8/10

I am so hyped for this. I hope it's as minimal in terms of plot as the last one. I just want John Wick kicking ass non stop.

John's new dog is killed by the Yakuza.

It would be cool if the new setting is something exotic or East Asian related and the bad guys are Yakuzas, Chinese Triads, or something alone those lines.

I'd like to see a new, young assassin make a name for himself by killing off the old ones. John is forced to return after his friends start dying. The order of the underground crime could be further explored by a new guy with no regard for it. We could see why there are rules and respect between assassin's/criminals.

John Wick didn't want to be dragged into another jitterbug contest....

Glad to hear this. But also, I hope Marvel can find a film for Keanu to play the lead in.

I'm sure there'll be a part in the sequel where John's new, giant dog rips a baddie to shreds.

Finally got around to watching John Wick, awesome movie for pure entertainment!

One thing I love to do when watching movies is look for those little things, directors love to hide little gems for their audiences to pick up on.

One such gem was the scene where John Wick is getting let into a secured zone and a security guard who lets him in is reading a book:
