just to clarify something: Ali played himself in the biographical movie "The Greatest" from the late 70s.
And then I see this:

Does Joe really believe this is the actual footage or is he just playing dumb? You can clearly see this is not Sonny Liston, you can clearly see this is not young Ali.

Either way, Joe Rogan has a serios thing for spreading misinformation.

Dude, don't believe anything that comes out of his mouth. Then You learn more.

LOL... I always thougt that was real and not from a movie. I also never heard about that movie. It's not unreasonable to believe that video was is real either. That is clearly Ali and he is not known as an actor. Even when you do a Google search of this incident the video appears legit.

After doing a little digging this is what actually happened...

"However Liston did pull out a FAKE gun in real life on Ali in the build up to their first fight. Ali (then knows as Clay) was hassling Liston at a table in a casino and Liston pulled out the gun. Ali left and according to Liston he got a bit spooked"

It's unreasonable when you consider that the nationally televised fights were in black and white. Why would they have color footage from a casino?
And why did a camera guy stand there? Or was it just a random guy with an Iphone back in 1964?

I also remember a Rogan podcast from one year ago or so. Rogan said that Ken Norton is fucked up from a car accident. By the time of that podcast Norton had already been dead for years, LOL.

It's not unreasonable for somebody who wasn't alive back then. I follow boxing, but I don't necessarily watch old fights unless I stumble across them on ESPN Classics or watch old highlights on YouTube. Also The mid 1960's is when color television really started to take off and half of the major networks programming was produced in color.

Unless you're a boxing geek this is a totally reasonable mistake, especially for a guy like Rogan who has seen thousands of fights. He's also constantly spewing multiple hours of unscripted dialog over the internet 3 or 4 times a weeks so the guy is going to make mistakes.

I'm not a Rogan nut-hugger or anything and you are right for correcting his error, but I don't see a reason for you to be so cynical about it.

How was I cynical? Because of the iPhone remark? That's just one sentence you asshole.

Also I'm not sure why you don't consider Rogan a "boxing geek" as you put it. The guy has a collection of Willie Pep DVDs.

Calm down there pancakes. I get where you're coming from, I just see it as an honest mistake. I also didn't mean geek in a bad way either as I consider myself a combat sports geek. I guess "enthusiast" would be a better term. I'm pretty sure Rogan only watches the big boxing fights and is probably 90-10 for MMA. I did chuckle at the Willie Pep comment though :D

Sonny Liston is pretty big time with a well known face, I suspect Rogan knows him well, I suspect Rogan noticed it's an older Ali, and I suspect he was being deliberately ignorant. Not sure why he does it, but he does it a lot.

And as I said: A random guy standing there and recording it professionally. Another guy filming it from another angle when Ali rans out ...Rogan is an idiot, but he's not that stupid.

No idea why this thread decided to go down the tubes. Lighten up guys, when I was drinking very heavily I'd be a dickhead on any thread I felt like. Don't do the same. We is like bredren fan, or some such Jamaican ting.
