After the disappointing games of the last generation (PS3, XB1, Wii), mainly due to the rapid rise of reskin American Videogames (Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, GTA).

Now, Japanese Gaming is coming back with this awesome Games.

It never really went anywhere, just not some peoples' cup of tea.

Just look at what happened to Final Fantasy, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid. Look at how much they try to "Americanized" the gameplay, they ruined it.

FF wasn't Americanized at all, if anything it went the opposite way... Anderson MGS 5 is like the best in the series barring the first one

Final Fantasy started going downhill a while back, pretty much when they started getting away from turn based combat. Luckily SE helped make the Bravely games, which are a throwback to the glory days of JRPGs.

Danganronpa is my shit

They sure know how to make elite graphic novels

If they start making fun games again, then we'll play them.

The reason western gamers abandoned their games is because they got weird as fuck. They became maudlin and forced you to play these metrosexual male protagonists who look and speak like girls and-- in every facet of behavior and mannerism-- seem more interested in posing for a magazine cover shoot than killing an evil king or somehow else restoring harmony to their world/people.

Also, enough with the fucking 15-foot swords. We've seen your porn. As hard as you've tried to scramble the truth you're not fooling anybody.

They try hard to be kakkoi for the japanese audience, which is already gone on mobile games, destroying green/yellow/pink bubbles with dragons and endless gundam crap.

Instead of helping struggling dev teams who try to make great Saint Seiya, Hokuto no Ken, Berserk, Attack on titans games but end up making meh games with ps3 graphics and animations.

While I agree with some of the points made about Japanese games main characters being too andogynous, I'm also just as sick of every single protangonist in western games being some scruffy old man that looks like he can barely get out of bed in the morning.

Theres nothing wrong with making attractive/youthful characters in games, western games seem to go out of their way to make everyone as unnattractive as possible while Japanese games try to take this to the opposite extreme, both serve different audiences, a middle gound would be preferable to me.

I mostly play western games besides the Souls series and fighting games, but right now I'm playing Nier Automata and it has reignited my interest in Japanese games.

Now at first glance you can look at vids/screens of this game and you will see an anime styled girl doing crazy physics defying moves against giant robots. At this point most will dismiss this game as typical 'weeb trash' but this is where they would be making a huge mistake. Any true gamer deserves to play this game and its 3 acts at least once in their life, thats seriously how good this game is. And the themes and storylines are more mature, darker and more thought provoking than 99% of all games out there, Western or Japanese.

You know what ruined Japanese gaming? It's fan base, to many autistics/weeabs.

The only "Japnese" games I have played really in the last 5 years has been:

And I only say "Japanese" because of the ties to Capcom.

Eh lots of series that I grew up with are gone or turned to shit ( FF, Breath of Fire, Suikoden, Star Ocean,Fire Emblem etc) but if you ask me what my favorite games of this or the last gen are they are probably still 80% Japanese.

Demon Souls/Dark Souls/Bloodborne are some of the most talked about games in the last decade and they are all Japanese. I don't think it went anywhere, it's always been around. 90% of my games are Japanse made. From last year I bought Disgaea 5 (incredible jrpg which people ignore because its not overrated final fantasy), Dark Souls III, Street Fighter V, Dragon quest heroes (like dynasty warriors but with more rpg elements, 7th Dragon III Code VFO, Pokemon Moon

Thanks for mentioning Nier: Automata. That game is a masterpiece in my opinion. They didn't even have a big budget and it's so much better than the mainstream stuff right now.

Metal Gear and RE are awesome. Final Fantasy would probably benefit from some Americanizing, it just got old playing as some kid in a boy band with spiky hair.

Yeah the soulsbourne series is one of the biggest in gaming right now so Japanese gaming never really left.

All the recent games and upcoming ones are nice though.

Just started playing it myself. I loved the first Nier and am enjoying Automata so far.

One of my favorite things about Japanese gaming is that they tend to stay away from first person. I hate that style and love third person, which most of the games are.

Yakuza 0 - dudes look like men.

Massive sleeper.

Last Metal Gear, you're also a mature scarred man.
