ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Adds Michelle Rodriguez as Filming Wraps

Filming has just wrapped on Alita: Battle Angel, yet there’s one more cast member that had been kept secret — until now.

Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and the Furious franchise, Avatar) signed onto the adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s famed manga, EW has exclusively learned. The film is directed by Robert Rodriguez and written and produced by James Cameron.

She joins the previously announced cast that includes Rosa Salazar, Jennifer Connelly, Jackie Earle Haley, Christoph Waltz, Ed Skrein, Mahershala Ali, and Keean Johnson.

Rodriguez will play Gelda in the film. In the comics, the character was a slim cyborg warrior.

Alita tells the future-set story of a cyborg girl (Salazar) rescued from a junkyard by a scientist (Waltz) who rebuilds her and together they explore her mysterious past.

Even though the Alita has finished shooting, the native-3D movie isn’t expected to hit theaters until July 20, 2018, to give production time to build the film’s extensive visual effects. Alita is live-action yet will also use plenty of CG for its backgrounds, cyber body modifications and, in certain cases, actor’s faces.

The movie is currently in production in Texas with Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar playing the title character. Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali and Ed Skrein are also among those on the call sheet for the Fox franchise hopeful.

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

Connelly will play one of the villains.

The actress, who won an Oscar for her performance in 2001’s A Beautiful Mind, is currently shooting Granite Mountain, the true-life tale of the elite firefighters who perished while fighting a wild blaze in Arizona.

NASHVILLE's Keean Johnson Nabs Key Role in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

After an intense search, Fox has found the love interest for Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of the popular manga graphic novels.

Keean Johnson, best known for his work on ABC’s Nashville, has nabbed the highly coveted part opposite Rosa Salazar, the actress who is playing the titular character in 20tth Century Fox’s big-budget sci-fi project.

Christoph Waltz, Jackie Earl Haley and Ed Skrein are already on the call sheet. Rodriguez is directing and Cameron producing with his partner Jon Landau.

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrap yard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.

Johnson will play Hugo, a young man who teaches Alita how to play a gladiator-style game called Motorball but who also has a secret side job stealing robot parts.

The studio did at least two rounds of testing for the part, all of them taking place in Rodriguez’s studio facility in Austin. Among those who tested were Tut star Avan Jogia, Douglas Booth (Jupiter Ascending), Jack Lowden (who will be seen in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming war drama Dunkirk), and Noah Silver, one of the stars of TVs Tyrant.

In the end, the filmmakers and studio went with a route that called for an “ethnically ambiguous” actor and the fresh-faced Johnson fit the bill.

Deadpool bad guy Ed Skrein will suit for Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s ambitious adaptation of the popular manga graphic novels.

Skrein will once again play a heavy, closing a deal to join the cast that already includes Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz and Jackie Earl Haley.

Rodriguez is directing while Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau are producing for Twentieth Century Fox.

Set in the 26th century, Alita tells of a female cyborg (Salazar) that is discovered in a scrapyard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial-arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals.

Skrein will play a character named Zapan, a villainous cyborg who is in possession of a weapon called the Damascus blade.

Jackie Earle Haley Joins James Cameron's ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

Jackie Earle Haley has signed on to join the cast of Alita: Battle Angel, James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez’s ambitious adaptation of the popular manga graphic novels.

Fox is moving toward a fall start and is casting up the large-budget sci-fi project, which has Maze Runner actress Rosa Salazar on board to play the title character, as well as Christoph Waltz.

Rodriguez is directing, while Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau are producing.

Sources were light on character information, but it is believed Haley will play a monstrous cyborg in a villain role that will call for plenty of CG and greenscreen.

An October production start in Austin is being targeted.

Haley is coming off a notable run on AMC’s Preacher and recently wrapped Sony’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower with Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. He next will be seen in the much-talked about race drama The Birth of a Nation.

Rosa Salazar Cast as the Lead in James Cameron's ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL

James Cameron handed over Alita: Battle Angel directing duties to Robert Rodriguez last year and the filmmakers set out to find the right young woman to lead the film. Last month, news broke that the search had narrowed down to three candidates — including It Follows star Maika Monroe, Disney sensation Zendaya, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials standout Rosa Salazar. Today, Collider is reporting that Salazar has landed the coveted role.

Based on the manga series by Yukito Kishiro, Battle Angel takes place in the 26th century and tells the story of an amnesiac female cyborg who is rescued from a scrapyard by a doctor, rebuilt with no memory of her previous life excepting her kickass martial arts skills, and becomes a bounty hunter tracking down vicious criminals.

Salazar has a pretty impressive resume for an up-and-coming actress, especially for only having been on the scene for the last five years, and after a notable turns in Insurgent, The Scorch Trials, and the wonderful FX comedy Man Seeking Woman she’s become a name to watch. Now, she’s landed what could be her breakout role.

Cameron hand-picked Rodriguez for to take over at the helm of his long-time passion project, and Rodriguez is said to be working from Cameron’s script, though he’s likely to take a pass at it and punch it up with his own style. No word yet on a production timeline for the long-developed adaptation.

Zendaya, Maika Monroe, Rosa Salazar Finalists for BATTLE ANGEL Lead

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez are zeroing in on their female actor to star in Alita: Battle Angel, Fox’s ambitious adaptation of the popular manga graphic novels.

Rodriguez is on board to direct what is envisioned as a big-budget tentpole, while Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau are producing.

The movie has not been greenlit as budgetary issues are still being worked out while the studio seeks to bring it down from the $175-$200 million range.

The following trio tested for the film, The Hollywood Reporter has learned: Maika Monroe, who starred in It Follows and will appear in this summer's Independence Day: Resurgence; Rosa Salazar, who appeared in Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and recently wrapped shooting Warner Bros.’s big-screen take of CHiPs; and Zendaya, the Disney Channel star of K.C. Undercover who is one of the female leads of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Sources say that Cameron and Rodriguez want to create a star-making vehicle akin to Cameron’s Dark Angel, the TV series that ran from 2000 to 2002 and became a platform for Jessica Alba. Sources also say that Zendaya could be the frontrunner for the role. A decision on the actresses is expected in the coming weeks.

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez Making BATTLE ANGEL ALITA

James Cameron’s more than 15-year journey to bring manga comic Battle Angel Alita to the big screen may be nearing an end. Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations to direct the live action adaptation of the manga graphic novels that will be produced by Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau.

Titled Alita: Battle Angel, the project tells of a female cyborg that is discovered in a trash yard by a scientist. With no memory of her previous life except her deadly martial arts training, the woman becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The action-adventure story is meant to serve as a backdrop to themes of self-discovery and the search for love.

"Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel," stated Cameron. "He's very collaborative and we're already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there's nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We're looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic."

Added Rodriguez: "Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron's spectacular, character-driven films. Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It's an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades."

Cameron for years intended to direct Alita but other projects kept getting in the way, notably Avatar, which took his attention further when he decided he was going to make three sequels back to back to back. The project had a script by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) but it is unclear whether it had undergone further work.

Both of those directors are cans. Blomkamp seems to be a 1 trick pony.

This movie will bomb, James Cameron only makes hits when he directs.

I was worried Cameron would finish his Avatar trilogy (?) tetralogy ? before tackling Alita. Would have loved for him to direct, as it seems right up his alley, but I'm not gonna complain. And now SFX is at the point where it could do this film justice.

The franchise has huge potential but Rodriguez is awful ...just awful. I can't believe that he will do a decent job of it.
