Jake Shields has a better win list than GSP - not even close

Just goes to show how good GSP was, to beat a guy with that resume ...

I love watching posters try to snipe at GSPs record

This thread misses an important point: most of GSP's best wins happened when he was the WW king. That makes a huge difference. First, it means that he generally fought guys when they were at the best point in their careers; hence receiving a title shot. A number of Shields' wins were against guys who hadn't yet peaked in their careers or had already entered the back end of their careers.

Second, there is something inherently different about being the champion and defending the belt. More pointedly, continuing to win fights becomes much more difficult when you have the pressure of defending the belt (i.e., you have more to lose than the other guy. It takes its toll. There's a reason there have been so few long-reigning champions.

**Edited to better win list- better wins over quality of opposition

Shields

Sakurai
Yushin Okami (middleweight)
Carlos Condit (WEC champ)
Mike Pyle
Paul Daley
Robbie Lawler (UFC champ)
Mayhem Miller
Dan Henderson (light heavyweight P$P goat champ champ)
Martin Kampmann
Akiyama
Tyrone Woodley (UFC champ)
Damien Maia

GSP

Karo Parysian
Jay Heiron
Jason Miller
Frank Trigg
Sean Sherk
BJ x 2 (lighweight champ)
Hughes x 2 (welterweight champ)
Fitch

Condit
Diaz
Hendricks (didnt win)

GSP has the Shields win ill give him that BUT Shields has beaten better opponents imo. Discuss.
Shields beat Mayhem Miller, while GSP only beat Jason Miller o_O

Where the hell did all these Strikeforce fanboys come from all of a sudden?

TS credits Tyron and Robbie as being UFC champions under Jake's win list even though he beat them both years before they tasted gold

Whereas Hendricks doesn't get recognition as a champion (on GSP's list) despite winning the title 4 months later
This pretty much tells you all you need to know

of course jake shields does. he is one of the most underrated fighters in all mma. he has fought just about everyone in his division. it's really amazing.

Shields lost to GSP. End of thread.

gsp looked like shit against shields. gsp was so fearful of going to the ground with shields, it was pathetic. and that was before the eye-poking. no wonder the crowd booed that fight.

Shields looked scared shit of GSP to the point he starting poking and claw at GSP's eyes at every opportunity. GSP had one eye for majority of the fight and Shields did fuck all, that's pathetic

You're missing thiago alves. He was a beast back then

He doesn't and I'll explain. A ton of Shields' big wins were when guys were either on their way up or on their way down while GSP took on basically everyone at their peak because that was the golden era of the UFC giving title shots only when they were earned. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part it holds true with GSP's reign.
And there's the context that would paint a more accurate picture of the list...

Why did you list Jason "Mayhem" Miller on shields wins as Mayhem Miller and as Jason miller on GSP's Column?

Where you intentionally trying to make it sound better for shields? Or do you not know they are the same person LOL!!!!
I wondered the same...didn't know whether or not it was to be intentionally misleading or merely not being aware that they were the same fighter.
