It's so obvious that Conor is leaving UFC for boxing

McGregor doesn't need to garner interest from the "boxing fans" to make a lot of money in boxing even if Floyd wipes the floor with him. All he has to do is maintain the majority of his own current fanbase who are likely to support him regardless of what sport he competes in.
Not really

He ran from defending his belt knowing if he'd lose, his stock would drop

The Same with this and same with when he returns to the ufc

He should thank floyd post fight for when he carries him for a few rounds so the publiv don't feel scammed for falling into this farce of a fight and i say that as a big fan of Floyd

Only Floyd and his team could cash an easy fight and payday and damage the ufc

After Conor KO's Floyd, there are just so many options for him:-

-Boxing
-UFC
-Movies
-Fashion
-Politics

The last one doesn't seem too far fetched having seen who's the president right now

He is gone win or lose (and it will be a loss) but it won't matter. He can make more boxing Malignaggi than he could make in five UFC fights.
Haha and people day floyd ducked opponents. Fight someone NOT retired for goodness sake!!!

Unless Conor either wins or has an outstanding showing in defeat, you're absolutely right.

The only reason people are shelling out 100 bucks a pop for this spectacle is because they believe there is a chance... a slight chance... that Conor might just be that rare, athletic superman capable of doing the impossible.

If he ends up getting pinged around the ring like a punching bag, swinging at air, no one in their right mind is going to pay a cent to see him box another pro boxer.
I would.!!! Against GGG or Cotto.

I don't think it is realistic to expect many people to be willing to shell out $100 to watch Malignaggi come out of retirement for one last fight. The reason for his last fight against Sam Eggington was so that Sky Sports could get him to commentate on Joshua - Klitschko. It was a case of "Hey, fight on our undercard. Umm...seing as your here, would you mind commentating on the main event?"
Why would you want your amazing athletic hero to fight someone who is retired? It makes no sense. You/they believe he is better than all boxers but yet only choosing retired ones? Crazy shit.meh

McGregor has already lost in the UFC and lost emphatically, and yet it did nothing to hurt him as far as his drawing power went. In fact it has very likely grown significantly since then. A loss in MMA didn't hurt him much if at all when it came to his fanbase and that was in his own sport. A loss in boxing isn't going to hurt him much if at all when it comes to his fanbase either. It's rare that a fighter who's reached the status and popularity he has is ever hurt much by a loss. Their fanbases stick with him for the most part.

McGregor will have plenty of options to make some eight figure paydays in boxing even if he should lose badly to Floyd (which is very likely to happen). He's got the fight with Malignaggi in his back pocket that will sell well and allow Conor the lion's share of the split. There's fights to be made made with some UK fighters around 154-160 if he chose to do that, which would sell well at the gate and on UK PPV in which is can command a 90/10 split with his opponent. He's got options in boxing if he so chooses that route. His fanbase isn't going to all of sudden abandon him after only one loss in boxing. Maybe after a few losses. But not after only one in a fight that he's very unlikely to win anyways.

ITT people still thinking Paulie Malignaggi fight would be a big seller.

No it wouldn't. First, if Conor wins or look great against Floyd, nobody will think a retired boxer that was nowhere near Floyd's level even in his prime is going to be a challenge for Conor. Second, if Conor loses and looks bad, nobody is going to be interested in seeing him box again. "Well he looked like shit, but maybe he can beat some bum in boxing.... or maybe we could watch him actually compete at the highest level in MMA."

And third, Conor and Paulie already went a full 12 rounds. The only one saying Paulie was competitive is Paulie himself, and Conor has footage of the spar that he's already released, making Paulie look awful.

Conor will never box Malignaggi.

It's become crystal clear that both McGregor AND Dana are cashing out on the UFC with this fight. I expect Dana to resign by winter and McGregor to never step in the Octagon again.

Notice today how he completely dodged the question about whether this would mark a career change for him or whether he would return to UFC.

Compare that to early in the press tour, when he said his next fight would definitely be in the Octagon.

Now that he's gotten a taste of the money he can make in boxing, there's no chance he goes back. Just by boxing Malignaggi (no doubt his next fight) and one or two other guys, he can make five times more than he'd make doing another decade of UFC.

Your whole post assumes conor will look decent.

If Conor gets starched quickly, who is gonna wanna watch him box again?

nah. I don't think he'll leave the ufc for good. he'll get smoked by Floyd. fight paulie in a few months and lose. he'll be filthy rich, but his ego wouldn't let him retire. he'll then go back to the ufc.

No. You're acting like there will be some residual interest based on how much money this fight has generated. This fight is a curiosity fight and nothing more. When he loses badly, the curiosity will be gone and he'll either go back to the UFC or retire.

There could be a quarter of the interest and Conor would still bank a ton more than he ever would returning to the UFC.

The only two fights casuals care to see Conor take part in next are Malignaggi or Diaz. There's no doubt he'll make triple boxing Malignaggi than he would fighting Diaz in UFC.

Who said anything about $100?

He could do a million buys against Malignaggi at $50 clip and still make a ton more based off PPV, gate, sponsors than he'd ever be able to make in UFC.

Note that I'm not saying he'll ever make anything comparable to what he's making for this fight, but he'll still make a hell of a lot more than he can ever make in UFC.

And third, Conor and Paulie already went a full 12 rounds. The only one saying Paulie was competitive is Paulie himself, and Conor has footage of the spar that he's already released, making Paulie look awful.

Which is exactly what they will use to sell that fight.

How is this so hard to understand?

Conor couldn't hang with TBE, but he's got a real chance of beating a former world champion boxer. They're already shaping this narrative and that's what will sell the fight.

He doesn't even have to look decent for there to be interest to see him box again. As has been pointed out, he's been beaten in UFC and it didn't kill interest in seeing him come back. The fact that he's already allegedly gotten the best of Malignaggi in sparring is what will sell that fight.

Talent doesn't always = box office. Charisma is what = box office and McGregor has enough of it, in a sport of boxing that needs big box office names, especially with Floyd retiring. Boxing promoters and sponsors will shell out cash to get Conor in a boxing ring again, win or lose.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see McGregor-Malignaggi happen under the Mayweather Promotions banner. Floyd has some really talented young fighters, but nobody who is truly a big box office name yet.

You are way too optimistic. Most of his fans will abandon him the second he loses decisively. Plus, he has an MMA fandom who aren't interested in boxing to begin with.
