This misconception pops up in every thread related to Conor tapping to Khabib.

Yes, it was a choke. The chin down is no defense against a choke. The majority of high level competition RNCs are over the chin. Proof:

Starting with the most relevant one, talking about the fight (timestamped):

A spinal lock is a multiple joint lock applied to the spinal column, which is performed by forcing the spine beyond its normal ranges of motion. This is typically done by bending or twisting the head or upper body into abnormal positions. Commonly, spinal locks might strain the spinal musculature or result in a mild spinal sprain, while a forcefully and/or suddenly applied spinal lock may cause severe ligament damage or damage to the vertebrae, and possibly result in serious spinal cord injury, strokes, or death.[citation needed] Spinal locks and cervical locks are forbidden in IBJJF Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitions,[1] amateur MMA,[2][3] multiple forms of no Gi Jiu Jitsu,[4] Judo,[5] and other martial arts.[6] However, professional MMA and some Brazilian jiu-jitsu competitions[7] do permit spinal locks and, particularly, neck cranks, and such moves are trained in various MMA and Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools. The move was used by Khabib Nurmagomedov to tap out Conor McGregor at UFC 229.

Was there like, a lost AV bet involved here?

The submission was from extreme pressure on the jaw. Op has never rolled a day in his snowflake life.

I know many people have said that it's a legit blood choke, but it really looks like Ginger tapped to a face squeeze, looking at this. And did not even defend. Like not even tried.

Yes, Conor tapped without even trying to hand fight, and it looked like he just gave up. But the technique IS a choke, whether Conor tapped because he was given an excuse to do so or because he didn't want to go to sleep.
