I am not aware of this so what happened? The whole situation in southern Philippines has been going on since the 70s I wont be surprised if certain Military officials and local politicians are arming and funding these militants to destabilize the region for different political reasons.

And the Military denied that they negotiated and paid ransom but was caught by the media carrying a briefcase field with cash near the battlezone. Then the AbuSalsal group was able to walk away just like that.

Isn't the Islamic insurgency in the Philippines a separatist movement though? As in, the grievance isn't foreign policy but an independence struggle? Do you think the Muslim areas of the Southern Philippines should be given autonomy like Aceh has in Indonesia? There are legit complaints about some of the laws in Aceh but ultimately that agreement on autonomy diffused the insurgency in that region so it accomplished what it set out to do.

Yeah that's the sort of thing I was thinking about. I bet this is not too different to how the scenario in the OP got "resolved".

Giving them more autonomy to do crazy stuff wont help the Philippines since there are large numbers of Non Muslims in the area they will just move to Manila and cause more problems here if we turn Mindanao into Aceh, besides there are significant numbers of Muslims there who don't like the Sharia style laws these bandits are trying to set up.

What ever their Motives for beheading and putting bombs on Schools and buses does not matter at this point they have been too radicalized to even try to negotiate peace deals with. It is not just at separatist movement it is Islamic supremacy they have this belief that the whole Archipelago is once united thru Islam and that all Filipinos should convert to Islam.
