Is Sonnen subbing Shogun one of the greatest upsets of all time?

Shogun at the time of the fight was extremely far removed from the place where he made his name as a near-GOAT of the division.

Trevor Berbick didn't beat the greatest HW boxer of all-time...he beat a faded-faded shell of the greatest HW boxer of all-time.

Same basic idea here to a lesser extent. Still an upset, but not especially large.

Does anyone know what the lines were for that fight?

Not even the biggest upset of shoguns career, losing to Forrest was more shocking

Sonnen was the betting favorite on some sites.

Chael winning by sub was surprisingly but not that crazy. Bad strategy by Shogun as well.

Absolutely.

Not only was Chael levels below Shogun as a fighter, he was also subbed quite a few times.

I literally became a man when that happened. No more Santa.

He went for the submission earlier in the fight too. Chael was aware of the opening.

Beating him wasn't the surprise...subbing him was.

Sherdog has always underestimated how good Sonnen was on TRT and how shot Shogun was when his knees finally went and he lost any semblance of movement

Taken into context.. not one of the greatest but still big

The surprise for me wasn't that Chael won (although I was definitely picking Shogun) but how Chael won. Shogun diving for takedowns with his neck out like that? It was just weird

A guy that never did anything at 205 vs a Goat from the division... what u guys say?

Fairly certain Chael opened as the betting favorite (on fight night he closed as small underdog)
so,.... not even close.

Shogun wasn't "diving for takedowns" with his neck out though.
Sonnen had top control, baited Shogun with an opportunity to stand, then as Shogun postured up to get to his feet, Sonnen wrapped the neck and pulled guard.

Don't know if the greatest of all time.

But it was for sure one of the saddests of all time.
Shoguns face of disappointment was heart breaking.

The loss, not so much. The sub was quite ironic and unpredictable.

Chael was much better than people gave him credit for.

Considering the form Shogun had been in, it wasn't particularly surprising he lost to a competent wrestler. Getting submitted by Chael was fairly surprising, but again, Shogun wasn't particularly consistent in his prime. Expecting consistency when he's shot is just unrealistic.

This bout is only a big upset for those who underestimate Chael and overestimate Shogun.
