Is Making Weight All Discipline?

This is what discipline looks like:

Stopped reading

But to address the thread title: you can have the same weight-cutting routine protocol that works for years, but then suddenly your kidneys give out. That's not really a discipline issue at that point

Can't blame you.

This. And if they didn't want to make such changes to their lifestyle to accomidate the weight class their in, they can always go up and eat whatever they want

Unless they're Hendricks of course

The girls don't all have that option. But I agree for the guys.

Amazing how much difference 10 pounds can make.

There is an important difference between weight cutting and weight management, and I'd say they represent two very different kinds of mental strength. Weight management is keeping in good shape in between camps – weight cutting is the dehydrating and extreme dieting that takes place during the week before the fight. Look at Hendricks: he's able to push his body really hard, hard enough to end up in the hospital at times. His problem is he baloons up between camps, forcing him to undergo extreme cutting. Someone like Bisping or Cerrone who stays in great shape year round has far less demanding weight cut. Then there are of course fighters who do both things, like Conor at 145 or Kenny Florian back when he did his best impression of Christian Bale in the Machinist.
