no, sambo is a combat mixed martial art wich developed around catch wrestling, greco-roman wrestling, turkic folk wrestling styles, japanese jiu jitsu, tenjin shinyo-ryu jiu jitsu, kito ryu jiu jitsu etc.

Russia is practicing a lot of crazy martial arts. There's a real desire to go with whats effective and realistic over "safe and friendly". Unfortunately, there's not much infrastructure behind it. Kudo, a hybrid of karate and judo, and Ukado, are both popular but at a smaller level.

Khusein Khaliev, Khusein Askhabov and Magomed Bibulotov are all well versed in these sports. So technically they're karetekas but very different from your standard "American" karate guys.

Another thing to note is that every single one of the "underground" martial arts organizations in Russia organize their own MMA oriented competitions. Just pointing that out to highlight their mindset. It all stems from their history with Combat Sambo, and taking things to the next logical levels.

According to his father he wanted Khabib to be a judo gold medallist and when looking at his father's gym it seems that they mainly practice Judo? I know he's also a sambo expert but it seems that be started when he was a teen. BTW his manager email is alijudo@gmail so that's a hint there

He's a judo guy alright...as in judon't got a chance of beating him.
