I had this discussion at work, and some jimmies got rustled, so it seemed like a good WR topic.

Simple question. Proxy war in Syria escalates, traditional lines are drawn. Bric nations vs EU, US.

    Draft is reinstated.

    Do you show up?

Me personally, my answer is fuck no.

Not because I am a coward, but because I refuse to go fight for a government that is not of the people, by the people, and for the people. You will never find me spilling blood for oligarch interests in the south China sea, ukraine, or Syria.

    If you wouldn't, why?

    If you would, why?

    Discuss.........

If the draft came back? I wouldn't wait for my number, I'll go fucking enlist myself so I can at least choose my branch, if not try and get into the portion of the branch I want.

To rip a quote away from Band of Brothers for why so many of them volunteered for the Airborne:
"We got paid $50 more, AND we knew we would be there with people that wanted to be there and not next to some English teacher that is shitting themselves."

I have a friend that is a single dad that said if he wasn't a widower with a toddler and a like 8 year old daughter he'd have never left the military in like 2010.

Imagine all the people that died in Vietnam over some bullshit ass theory. No thank you. I'll wait until we're actually attacked.

I doubt even the draft would even succeed these days -- their would be massive riots on the home front. It would need a massive scale attack on american soil to get people on board -- scary party, the US knows thats what it would take.

You posted this without even considering whether burning your draft card, and not going was an option.

In band of brothers, they were fighting a just war, for a government with legitimacy.

I contend that in no situation where our proxy war in Syria turned into WWIII, could that war be just, or could our government be legitimate.

I refuse to burn my draft card. My dad could have done that with Vietnam and he didn't, I won't fucking do it. I refuse to do it.

My (currently) fat ass would get denied plus with my eyesight and need for glasses I KIND of doubt I'd get put in a front line unit (bbbooo) but still, if I were in ok shape and heard the draft was re-instated I am putting in my two weeks notice at work and going to the recruiters office.

That's what my dad did before he went to Vietnam.

He was from a poor, small town with 12 boys in his graduating class and most of them had gotten their draft notices, so he went and enlisted beforehand so he could have a choice of what he wanted to do.

Out of the 12 boys he graduated with, 8 of them died in Vietnam.

My dad took the test for Annapolis and missed by one point so he went to King's Point and was from Minneapolis. Of him and his 15-16 friends that went to Vietnam, only 5 came back whole (physically, and only a total of 7 came back at all.

Regardless of how it starts if it is WWIII the scenario ends up being your countries survival. The people occupied during WWII didn't exactly have a good time.

If I was a coward, I'd join. Guess I'd find out if I was a coward if presented with the situation.

I believe in WWII that the US didn't need the draft for numbers it was just much easier to organize a draft than open enrollment

Ahhh, and you hit the nail on the head.

If we fight WWIII, it won't be in defence of the mother land. In modern history, we have been attacked twice, and no one has ever even made a serious attempt at occupying US territory.

Which begs the question, what are we fighting for if not oligarch interests?

When did American interests become code word for oligarch interests?

When did our Department of Defense, become the Department of Offense.

Tough question. While I'm against the idea of being forced off to fight in a foreign war, I've got a family; so committing crimes and facing jail time is pretty low on my priority list. I think I'd be low on the list due to my age, as well.

If it looked like my number was up, though, I'd probably enlist, work with wounded vets, and enjoy my military benefits.
