If he had kept improving what was Cole Konrad's ceiling?

He was just starting to show his potential before he retired. I imagine that was a bummer loss for Bellator as he was such a bright prospect. I know he wasn't the most exciting fighter, akin to a heavyweight Askren maybe? (I'm not sure if that is apt or not)

I wish he would've kept going.

    Hard to say.

His striking was just awful and at HW that is the strength of a majority of the better HW's. I think he'd take some pretty bad beating to be honest unless he really took the time to develop his striking.

I honestly think he would have beat Volkov, Minakov, Kongo, Johnson, and Lashley in title defenses by now if he would have stayed (assuming he would have stayed in Bellator, of course). The Bellator Heavyweight division would be A LOT farther along due to not ducking the division for 2 years *cough* Vitaly Minakov *cough*.

Kongo would have given him the biggest challenge but you don't simply wall-n-stall a NCAA D1 wrestler the size of Konrad.

Sad part is, Coker probably would have let him go in exchange for Shamroid and Dada 500.

Even though he wasn't cut, Konrad was very, very strong. His submission game/mma grappling seemed to be getting better near the end of his run. He had excellent body control. His striking was obviously what was lacking. Who knows if he could have gotten it more respectable.

I do think he beats Volkov, Minakov, Kongo, Johnson, and Lashley. The question would be what he could do if he got signed by the UFC. Nobody knows. If there was a chance he would have came back, that probably would have been in 2015. Ship has sailed.

this. I think we probably saw what he was capable of, didn't really seem that suited to adding to his game. Kind of like Ishii

I don't think he would have been UFC champ by any means. I imagine his peak with a slightly better Cheick Kongo. Little worse striking, little better wrestling and probably a little less cardio. I would have liked to see though.

I honestly think if his striking improved that he would still be their champ right now

Ivanov never really got to a title shot in Bellator. He came the closest during the tournament final against Volkov that he lost in 2014. Ivanov could have earned a title shot after a win or two but Ivanov never fought in Bellator during the Coker era as he left for the WSOF. I left Ivanov out in my initial post because there would be no window for Konrad and Ivanov to fight.

Konrad would be too much for Ivanov, in my opinion. However, Cole Konrad's chin has never been tested so we'll never know for sure.

I think the sky was the limit. He did the bare minimum and still was head and shoulders against the rest of the Belaltor division. 100% dedicated? top 10 at the very least.

His heart was never in it though and he said he didn't like hurting people, i think he would've struggled making 265lbs as well.

    Konrad's wasn't either.

I don't know if he would have had to cut down to 265. Maybe if he were to have fought in the UFC, but when he arrived on the scene he was in PRIDE and may have had a career in Japan only or the UFC could have started a SHW division with Gardner being the ace of the division. It's all speculation though.

What he really didn't like was getting hit.
