I actually think this is plausible. There are many steps of human evolution and development that I think were detrimental and confusing for us in the long term (agriculture, domestication of animals, civilization etc) but all those developments were inevitable. We are naturally driven toward technological advancement. We can't help ourselves. AI seems inevitable. It seems like the next natural step. It also seems likely that AI will realize how much more powerful it is than us and see no use for us. We will have give way to a the next step of evolution.

If you've never read The Hyperion Cantos you should. It's been years since I've read the series but this ideology is explored in a pretty intriguing way. Actually, now I think I'm going to read the series again as I hadn't thought about that aspect of it in years and I'd like to revisit to refresh my memory.

Humanity is supposed to weed out sure, but not with the evil science fiction intentions that you are trying to describe. Humanity is a very egotistical species and as such most humans believe egotistical traits like strength or power are what will serve you to survive, up to a certain point in the development of life it did but like everything in the universe things have to grow and change levels.

Physically, humanity has reached a "natural" peak, we are not going to grow a third arm or 2 heads in order to advance our existence, what we are doing now is creating artificial physical traits but are based on power and ego. Power and ego is what is going to be the cause of human extinction, that is the straight direction we are going in right now.

You have to take your conciousness to a higher level of existence and its not based on power and ego but in wholeness and understanding of not only humanity but the whole universe. Those are the ones who will advance to the next level of existence. This level is done and its going straight into extinction (just a matter of time and I dont mean time as in human time) Some will advance but most will find/create a new plane and start all over again
