I live in Thailand ask me anything (Thailand brahs gtfih)

Hey @Oeshon I'm in Chiang Man now (here until Feb). Might sound strange, hah, but I'm looking for leather belts with metals studs, size 28, but can't find any here. Been to a couple malls and several markets. Not exactly the belt below, but that type of style.

Are these easy to find in Bangkok, as well as other rock/punk type of clothing and accessories?

I saw some belts like this in the market outside Bangkapi Mall in Bangkok. I guess there is a lot of punk fashion there as there are a lot of popular tattoo shops nearby.

My friend owns a bespoke belt company in Bangkok but I don't know if they do belts with studs.

Why and when did they start closing down the street markets?

Started when the army took in 2014 but has really ramped up in 2016/2017. The army runs things now and the new head of the BMA is obsessed with turning Bangkok into Singapore.

"Nearly two-thirds of Bangkok’s 30,000 street vendors have already been removed or relocated from pavements to open up space for pedestrians, according to city officials."

The ironic thing is the reason there are so many pedestrians is that they are walking around to shop and eat food. Once the street is cleared, there is nobody walking about.

What about drugs? Are they easy to find? And is the punishment harsh for a tourist if he gets busted
They are very easy to find there are so many African gangs selling shit all through Soi 19-21

Reading through this thread brought back some nostalgia. I lived there for about 2 years...did a study abroad program at Thammasat university.
Living life as a student and a tourist was quite different. I got Thai prices if I wore my uniform or showed my student ID card at certain places.

I do gotta say that i know a lot of people complain about the Farang price, but, i honestly have no problem with it. I feel like a lot of foreigners treat Thailand like their LITERAL cum dumpster. No hespect for the people, land, or culture. Ive got no problem with them paying a higher price for it, especially when that higher price is still dirt fucking cheap comparatively to back home.
It really is a shame that so many people's image of Thailand is just hookers, ladyboys, and Pattaya. It's a beautiful country with great culture, history, and kind people.

Child porn was brought up here earlier, and I did actually see it myself in the night market at Sanam luang...this was probably 7 years ago though.

My question, The King's birthday (King Bhumibol) was always my favorite holiday. It was something so uniquely Thai, and it was just really cool and different to see the festivities and the city lit up in his honor.
How was the atmosphere and set up like for the current King's bday?

I believe the King's birthday was in July but i don't remember doing anything that day. Not sure if I was in Bangkok at the time but I def. didn't see anything on social media about it.

The previous King's birthday is still a national holiday (December 5th) and they have also made his death a national holiday too (in October).

I'm guessing December 5th will still be a fairly huge event.

Chulalongkorn University is the best, though!

One of The best part of Thailand is the street food on Khoisan rd. It sucks that this is happening. Why does the army want to turn Thailand into Singapore? Singapore has a very uptight culture. I heard Most Singapore travel to escape it.

There is still street food in Chinatown and Khaosan Rd but it is now being managed by the BMA. The street food sucks in Khaosan though. Half of the street food vendors there are shitty chicken kebabs.

Hey @Oeshon , another question. I prefer to take caffeine pills/tablets instead of drinking coffee. I brought some with me from the states and am almost out. Can't find any in the Thai stores/pharmacies. And just now, I read some old articles (from like 2000) that say certain parts of Thailand were going to make caffeine pills illegal. Can't find anything definite though. I was thinking about ordering some from iHerb which delivers to Thailand no problem. But now I'm concerned that if I do that I'll be thrown in some Thai gulag for 20 years. Is it illegal to have/use caffeine pills in Thailand, Chiang Mai specifically?

Saw the other threads on Korea and China, so figured I'd chip in and handle the Thai side of things. Have at it.

Do Thais Love China? And what they think of Russia, India, Israel and USA? Oh and Colombia

They are not legal but like most things, you can still find them at dodgy pharmacies. I think the reason they are illegal might be related to Yaba, which is one of the biggest drugs over here and is a pill that is caffeine mixed with meth.

how come you spelled "ocean" the way you did?

I guess this depends on who you ask for a few.

A lot of Thai/Chinese don't love China, but speak Chinese and share a lot of the same culture/food etc. Thai/Chinese is more of it's own thing now after so many generations. Similar to African Americans being different to Africans from Africa or FOBS.

As for Chinese tourists, they are universally hated. They come in huge tour groups and have horrible manners. They don't line up, they (literally) shit in the streets, are loud, and don't support local businesses.

India is mostly universally hated too. Again, a lot of Indians travel here and behave poorly. Very bad spenders, very rude, smell, etc. Thais call them "kaek" which is a derogatory slang for them. The classic is 4 Indians going into a bar and sharing 1 beer.

For Russians, I would say it depends on if the Thais are from a touristy area or not. Russians tend to stick to a couple areas of Thailand, so there isn't a wide exposure to them for all Thais. In tourist areas there is typically frustration with communication as a lot of Russian tourists can't speak English well. On the flip side, they stick to their own little areas and because of this, a lot of businesses cater directly to them with Russian languages. You can go to areas in Pattaya and Phuket where all the signs are in English Thai and Russian. Overall they get treated fairly well and get by okay once language is worked out.

Israel is similar to Russians but they are more spread out as most are younger travelers out of army service, rather than Russian families. In the tourist areas they are hated for good reason. Some of the cheapest and rudest travelers there are. You will literally see signs hanging up outside guesthouses and hostels saying "no Israel" due to how shitty they can be.

USA doesn't have any problems. Most people love the US. Mostly good travelers and Thais love a lot of US culture too.

Shit, that sucks. Guess that explains the weird looks I got when I asked for caffeine pills at the pharmacies. Hah.
