How to Solve the Champion Duck Syndrome

20% of what purse?

If they are injured, there is no fight and no purse. And who the fuck will sign that contract?
If they are scheduled that means training camp has already started. UFC should pay fighters who lost their opportunity because their opponents or champions got into an accident. Take 20% of their purse from their next fight.

Cormier and Miocic have been signed to fight in July since March. They didn't start a training camp.

What if there is no next fight? Why would anyone sign to fight if there is deficient in pay?

Would you go to work if you knew you would be docked pay for something out of your control?

Simple. Fork up the change. Was djs money demand really so outrageous?

Hit them in the pocket, force them to drink coors light, because they don’t deserve bud light.

this makes alot of sense. I like how you think.

this should just become the standard practice. Instead of interim belts. just do away with interim belts and let the 2 next best guys fight for the real title. if the champ ever nuts up and decides to come back they could fight whoever is the champ at the time.

this should also go for injuries as well because they could fake injuries just like what tyrone and might duck johnson are doing.
You must love paper champs.

DJ and Woodley aren't ducking people. DJ's objections to the TJ fight were perfectly reasonable and he has been a incredibly active champ. Woodley taking time to heal up after 3 defenses in a year and a half is also reasonable.

Stripping people and resetting the division would just lead to a bunch of situations like the LW division where you have 3 people with credible claims to the belt that makes it less accessible to casual fans.

The best way to solve his issue would be to remind fighters that the belt belongs to the UFC. It isn’t the champion’s belt, it’s the UFC’s. If you don’t want to fight the guy the UFC views as the next challenger, fine. You’re stripped of the belt. It isn’t the champion’s call on if a guy has “earned” a shot, it’s the UFC’s. Could you imagine an NFL Super Bowl team talking about refusing to play the other team because they were a 9-7 wildcard team? Fuck no. It’s utterly ridiculous.

it's surprising to read that with your av next to it.

DJ has the record for most consecutive title defences ffs, if you think he's a duck you're a moron

Easiest way is a fair & transparent ranking system where guys need to beat other ranked fighters to progress.

Champion only ever defends against No.1 Contender, unless there are injuries in which case the title fight goes to the next available ranked fighter.

No gifting title shots due to marketability, only based on merit. No more ducking dangerous challengers. Just champions defending against the best of their division.

Any champ refusing to defend is stripped. If injured after 6 months an Interim title, after a year the champion is stripped & the Interim becomes the World champion. No exceptions.

when you have 2 clear contenders ready to fight for the title and the champion isnt ready (whether its because he's ducking or injury) the 2 clear contenders should fight for the title and the previous champ stripped once you have a winner.

there should just be a clause for two title defenses per year. however, if a champion pulls out due to injury then they have 365days to get another fight or be stripped due to inactivity.
maybe always two challengers - one on retainer in case the first one gets injured (although this would make it harder for the champion to prepare as they would have to gameplan for two fighters potentially)
champion wouldn't be penalized for challenger dropping out.
honestly, just imposing a strict inactivity time limit regardless of reason would go a long way.
just thinking out loud.

aka: the Mighty Mouse Johnson, aka the Tyrone Woodley, etc...

CHampions want to hold onto the belt as long as they can so once they see a threat or bad stylistic matchup or an easier fight elsewhere they begin displaying symptoms of the "champion duck syndrome".

I say let's get rid of champions holding the belt and just have the 2 best guys available fight for the belt every so often. Just like what happens in every other sport.

The previous champ gets first right of refusal to fight for the belt the next time its scheduled to be up and if they cant make it they wait until the next time its up.

if DJ doesnt want to fight TJ then dillashaw can fight cejudo for the title.

in other words you're only champion the night you win the belt up to the night its up for grabs again.

I think this will eliminate the bullshit.

Lol that you named the two champs on the roster who have both fought in the last twelve months and have the most title defences.

Like some have suggested, a lot of these problems would be solved if the UFC actually grew a pair and simply enforced the old norms surrounding belts in MMA (at least within the UFC).

You don't need a bunch of fancy rules or a fancy system.

Simply enforce old rules more tightly, and you'll be fine.

Right now, the UFC is (at times) trying to have their cake (having big money fighters with the belt as long as possible) and eat it too (maximizing competition and true merit/prestige of the belt).

It just doesn't work that way.

THIS
fans bitch about ufc pay all the time until fighter tries to get paid themselves then they are a duck.

Also TJ is arguable more of an attempted duck then MM trying to drop a weight class temporarily to get out of a title Defense

Start a thread about ducking and pick the two black champions whonhave defended against the best of their weight class as and example and leave off McGregor, GSP, Bisping, and others....

Or just create an actual rankings system based on merit where champions fight the highest ranked contenders. Guys on win streaks themselves.

lmao

DJ has defended his OWN division just fine.

Focus on CHUMP champs like McGREGOR, who have NEVER defended their titles instead.
Agreed but the guy has 100 million reasons to not come back and get beat up for 5 million
