How to practice BJJ alone?

I'm surprised at how often I hear people say to visualize and analyze the techniques in their head. Doesn't everyone do this? Or are you people doing something I'm not?

I can't imagine a BJJ'er who doesn't think about technique for a very large portion of their day.

Does anyone have a good method of making a grappling dummy?

Doing lots of crawling and climbing movements help my Bjj a lot when I don't have a partner. Shadow grappling is good too

I'll take a shot at this one.

I think BJJ can be supplemented with solo practice. Good examples of things to work on:

Rolling in all directions
Hip movement (shrimping, hipping up for triangles/armbars, etc.)
Bridging
Escaping to the knees
Certain basic sweep movements (hip bump, scissor, flower)

Also don't forget about takedowns. Doing shots in the air is very helpful for form. Also any other throw you want to do is good to practice in the air.

Just remember it's not a substitute for training with a partner. It's just a supplement. But to that end, I think training on your own is just fine and in fact very useful. I do it personally, for what it's worth.

Truth.

Ive put a gi on a body pillow before... Also, I put one on a statue. Butttttttt, i smoke crack, so dont listen to me.

You are going to get out of it about as much as you put in. If you can only spare one day a week, then you are only going to be that good. No amount of dvd's or sit ups on your kitchen floor are going to make up for practice unfortunately. I would trade 8 hours of DVD watching for 8 minutes of drilling.

Get yourself a heavy bag, and a Swiss ball. You can work quite a bit of stuff with those two things.

Haven't read the thread, but here's one man's opinion.

If you're not training/lifting, do that first. Most valuable thing you can do alone.

Follow it with an aggressive stretching/joint mobility routine.

Once those things are done, pick no more than two moves that you can effectively drill alone and do them thousands of times. For example; uchi mata and hipbump.

Uchi can be done with one hand on the wall as you switch back and forth on both legs.

Hip bump can be done alone.

Those moves will be black belt level very soon.

Lots of new responses for a 5.5 year old OP and a banned TS. FYI, the necropost was a white belt asking about how to make a homemade grappling dummy.

I grapple with myself all the time. Almost always while watching porn but sometimes while watching women's MMA:)

Try to practice with a friend... I don't think you are going to learn something alone...

Make a grappling dummy.. that helps with some techniques.. but NOTHING will replace a live, resisting, opponent.

grind your ears on anything hard so you are ready for the cameras come competition time. Saves all that work trying to get cauliflower ears with a partner. But seriously I tend to do long stretching sessions when I am alone, it really helps with injury/random pain prevention

The senario for this is that a live training partner isnt an option.

If you don't have friends, I'd recommend a bear as a grappling partner.
