How solid is the theory of General Relativity?

"The word proof in science can only mean: confirmed to such a degree that to withhold provisional assent is absurd".

the evolution thread really triggered a lot of people and now we have a bunch of parody threads.

Ultimately, we know its wrong somewhere as it is incompatible with quantum mechanics. But your car gps wouldn't work without GR.

Still waiting for ODB an CBK to englighten us all on science again.

Can't wait to hear their take on it

Good thread on an interesting subject!

The Jesus gang will arrive soon to deny the the B theory of time and affirm absolute simultaneity and temporal becoming is real because Jesus.

Interesting how folks got triggered discussing evolution but there doesn't seem to be much dissent on GR.

@StickAndMove

I find both issues pretty fascinating.
. How Einstein in 1916 came up with the theory by thinking it through in his head. No laboratory work.
.The Atom bomb in 1945. Pencil, paper, sliding ruler and your head.

I would think both would not come up until at least the 1950s, but no. Some humans are extremely bright and can think through amazing things. Thinking 'outside the box'.

Einsten didn't develop relativity in a box. He piggybacked off of work that was being done in the 1800s by people such as Lorentz, Poincaré, and Larmor. They gave him the foundation in which to think. He just applied it far more universally .

Its provisionally true... so it's as sound as you can get.

Exactly. There are only three categories in science. False, not false, or provisionally true.
