It wasn't even a level playing field. He paid UCI to cover up his positives. Iban Mayo set the record on the ventoux and was climbing on another level than lance in 2004. Lance turned in Mayo to the UCI. The UCI protected Lance and hunted down anyone who could compete with him.

It wasn't level. Late 90s riders were doped to the gills. Some records are nearly untouchable. There is doping just enough to not get flagged and allowed to dope without limits. Lance was given much more freedom to dope than other riders and was allowed to pay a bribe to UCI president Verbruggen to make the positive go away. Lance tested positive in 2001 at the Tour of Switzerland and paid $100,000 to make it go away. The ramifications of something like that would have been a loss of sponsors, a suspension and increased testing result scrunitity due to race organizers hating their races being won by an obvious known doper. No one comes back from a suspension as strong as they were before the suspension, even if it is known that they still continued to dope.

But it wasn't level ever. This is what a level doping play field looks like. Don't buy the he wasn't trying angle. All them go all out and Lance was known and same with other top riders to stamp a stage to show everyone how strong he is or was to discourage people from attacking him at the Tour de France.
