Heading into the final stretch of the holiday season, I was wondering how gamers felt about 2017. Gamers seem to have been highly satisfied with 2015 and 2016 after being ostensibly disappointed with 2014. The biggest surprise this year has been the smash success of the Nintendo Switch, not just a novelty item in a year without competition, but also in the game department (where the Wii U was always lacking, and what ultimately doomed the console, most likely). The Switch owns 5 of the Top 20 games on Metacritic for the year so far; including the hands down most celebrated title of the year in Breath of the Wild.

Another thing that caught me off-guard, despite that I'm aware of how Microsoft is pivoting its XB1 strategy by dissolving the wall between its exclusives and the PC platform, was how poorly its showing has been in 2017 across the board-- not just for these increasingly rare exclusives. For example, VGChartz only tracks physical sales, but Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands is the bestselling title in 2017 on the platform, and yet it's only #55 overall  They only have four games published in 2017 in the platform's bestselling 100:

My 2017 has basically been PUBG... and it's been glorious.

Even if I still suck at it after 300+ hours.

Another garbage year for Xbox fans. We're getting a new system with no good exclusives and the ones we were going to get have either been cancelled or pushed back till next year. Crackdown 3 was announced when the ONE came out in 2013! While Sea of Thieves has been already shown in 3 E3's.. They don't even look fun to begin with.

    2017 Exclusives:

    • Halo Wars 2
    • Cuphead
    • Super Lucky Tale
    • Forza 7

What a joke! Their strategy seems to be feeding us Halo/Forza/Gears over and over while hoping to hit the lottery with one of their first party games. They're not willing to take chances and spend the money on some legit exclusives and that's extremely disappointing.

But hi, we get a new system upgrade o_O All these actions lately have caused me to say fuck the One X and wait for the PS5.

Yea they had the same strategy at the end of the xbox 360 era which is why I decided to leave. I could see where things were going.

2017 has been amazing for me. Nioh, Persona 5, and Horizon zero dawn. All amazing games. Replaying pillars of eternity on PS4 right now too which has been great as well.

Good start, then the usual summer/early fall slump, and a fairly good years end coming up. Worse than the last 2 years, but I feel like there's a decent Indie game coming up on PS4 every other week (like KONA, Absolver, Observer). Those were more on the crap side before.

Bloodborne and Nioh being exclusive to Sony really pissed me off. I might get the PS4 just for that.

    I'm pretty satisfied overall :

-Finally, some kind of "closure" in the Half-Life saga
    -Destiny 2 is fucking awesome!
-Dishonored 2 : Death of the Outsider drops next week

All in I'm pretty happy with the Xbone. I was initially interested in BOTW and the Switch, but I really have no desire to play any of the other games. I'm really not interested in buying an entire console for one game. We'll see what happens but overall its been a good year and especially a very good 2nd half for me.

Forza 7 and Cuphead aren't out, yet, and neither is an Xbox exclusive-- both will also be on Windows (PC). Like I said, the era of Xbox exclusives is pretty much over, but still, this thread isn't about upcoming games. Super Lucky Tale is an indie, and if I listed all of the notable or acclaimed indie releases, then there would be like 40-50 games in the PC column.

But yeah, they're doing horribly. When the bestselling physical game on your platform for the year is only your platform's #55 best physical seller for the console lifespan (going back to the only two months it saw in 2013)...sales are probably not going terribly well.

Ya you're right, console exclusive would be the better term.

I'm looking forward to Player Unknown Battlegrounds which could be coming out on Xbox later this year. I haven't played it but it looks fun. The company who created it seemed to have made a console exclusive deal with Microsoft for the time being. They aren't mentioning Playstation by name in interviews. I'm thinking maybe Microsoft is going to buy them out due to it's major success on PC but it could just be a one year deal like Tomb Raider was..

I stay a year or two behind to maximize my enjoyment. I seldom get to play despite a pretty strong rig.

Games this year I have put time into:

    1) Mafia 3 - 7.5 / 10
    2) Far Cry 4 - 9 / 10
    3) Southpark Stick of Truth - 7 / 10
    4) SF5 - 6 /10

On deck (i.e. paid, but not played):
    Dishonered
    Wolfenstein
    Deus Ex
    Shadow of Mordor

I'd really like to see Super Lucky Tale to come to PC, the VR Lucky's Tale on the Rift is a blast. I'd love to see more platformers like that for VR.

As an RPG guy, this year has been great and I can't keep with all the games I want to play. Zelda, Horizon, and Persona 5 were huge launches for me. Just finished up the FFXII remaster which I loved, and just now getting into Mass Effect. I still haven't gotten around NiOh and Nier, which were both really well received by fans and critics.

Agree that the Xbox is really lagging this year on the game front. Not much of a shooter guy so games like Halo and Gears just don't interest me that much. After cutting cable my Xbox One has been really great as my streaming device and actually going to pick up a second one so I can put it in my other room. All my gaming from here on out will probably be on the PS4 and Switch with oddball game every once in a while on the XB1.

No, Divinity 2 was a 2016 release, while Wolfenstein 2 and EW2 are both still unreleased.

Which means people won't have an opinion on it yet as they haven't played it. Again, this isn't a hype thread. This is a review thread.

Definitely a down year and one of the worst in recent memory. The only new game I picked up was Andromeda and it was a disappointment.

Looking forward to Sea of Thieves but nothing grabs me for the remainder of the year.
