How do other big affiliations promote in BJJ?

Just curious for those that train at other big BJJ affiliations like for example Atos or Checkmat or Gracie Humaita

I get why at somewhere like Gracie Barra, where an instructor can have dozens of students, it would be hard to keep track of who is due for a promotion without using an attendance card. Is it the same way at other big academies?

At Atos and Huamiata for example, if you come regularly, get enough days checked on your card, etc, you will get promoted with stripes and belts on specific predetermined dates? If so what are those years between belts etc?

A friend told me it was like this at Sauer's school too, where he trains. Something like 200 hours to blue, 500 on top of that to purple, etc. Presumably you're going to pick up some technique with all that time on the mat. But it's not a guaranteed thing, is it? People learn in different ways, some faster, some slower...
