He was the Ben Askren of his day. Stifling, otherworldly rasslin. Never needed to learn how to strike & didn't need to.

He shrugs off Hendos right hands like they're nothing & dumps him on his head.

Would've had to go on a raid if Hendo got the nod when the decision was being announced.

Although this is badass, it also makes me sad. I’m already tired of “money fights” and I have a feeling we’ve only just begun with this BS

Haha, this old PRIDE dawg has been successfully brainwashed by stupid US rules. When Hendo had Arona's head in sort of a neck crank and started kneeing away, I was like "hey WHAT THE FUCK, you can't do that!". Poor me.. may there be mercy on my soul.

Ok. I just watched the fight because i haven't seen it in like 10 years.

What a great fight between two great fighters!

Arona's takedowns, top control, pressure, guard passes were second to none.

Henderson's escapes were so beautiful in PRIDE. The man could still move so well at this time.

I love how Hendo tries to get fancy in the beginning with a butterfly hook but Arona immediately steps over his leg and into half guard. Then Arona tries to go from half guard to mount but as soon as his leg comes out, Hendo reverses him in that brief millisecond of being off balance with an amazing bridge! This was back when Hendo still had some of his Olympic wrestling skills. He also seems to be very comfortable on his back because he knows he will find a moment to escape or reverse. It was funny when Hendo tried an armbar from the bottom, and Arona easily stepped around him.

Arona ate a few bombs on the feet and a huge right hand on the ground right at the end of the round.

Arona had trouble maintaining the mount in the first two rounds but in the third he finally is able to hold Dan there.

Arona definitely won the grappling battle but this is such a sick throw by Dan

This Fight was often given es an example of how boring "decision Dan" was.... Back in the day, most people just wanted every fight to be a brawl...any fight that wasn't a brawl or was grappling heavy was called boring.

Goes to show just how much more knowledgeable the fan base here has become....

He’s also one of the worst strikers in mma history to be an elite fighter at one time.

Great analysis. I haven't seen it in a few years, but I always enjoyed this fight. I am one of the biggest Hendo fans ever, but even I was baffled by him getting the nod from one of the judges. Arona shut him down in Rd 3- just like he did to Mezger.

Arona was a beast of a takedown artist, too. He could've beaten anyone in the world when he was in his prime.

Check out Arona/Lister from Pride if you want to see another grappling clinic. Awesome fight.

What about Maia and Khabib in recent times? And WW and LW are supposed to be the top divisions nowadays? They stormed through their divisions on the way to title shots using only grappling.

At least Arona had good kicks

    Arona had better kicks.

Arona couldn't ever really be comfortable with his hands. Look at all the guys he fought that had dangerous striking: Overeem, Shogun, Wanderlei 2x, Rampage, Fedor, Dan Hendo.

He came in as a grappling God and outgrappled almost everybody.

Khabib and Maia only use punches to set up a takedown. Arona usually never had a problem taking anyone down except for Rampage and Sokodjou.

Brilliant fight. Proper MMA, full rules, so much more dynamic with knees and kicks on the ground, upkicks no matter if you're downed or not. Knees to the head from underneath to open space up and damage. Free flowing, a full 10 minute round is tough as hell. Great post. Reflecting on this, its just better than the MMA we see at the moment.

Oh and Arona was a grappling monster

And again, much like Khabib, Askren, Blaydes, etc, it really didn't matter. He still sat near the top of the sport because his wrestling was just that spectacular.
