Help remembering story: bare knuckle boxer freaked out of tournament

is there a story of a British bare knuckle boxer who was going to join a professional boxing tournament in America... but when he saw how hard these American heavyweights were hitting each other in sparring he opted out of joining it.

Possibly Joe Savage?

He was being touted back in the day as being this fearless bare knuckle fighter, he ended up fighting Bert Cooper and getting absolutely destroyed.

It took him quite a few years to get to the ring though



Yeah, it was this guy now thinking back, i think he was meant to be in a tournament but something happened, not sure he was really spooked though as he did go on to fight Cooper

Alas, earlier this week, Savage fell down some stairs at an airport and, as the event neared, was finding it difficult to turn his wrist. He is now back at home in the Midlands with his wife and daughter.

But I've also read stories of Bonecrusher Smith freaking Savage out
