First Official Image of David Harbour as Hellboy in the HELLBOY Reboot

Filming is underway on the Hellboy reboot and the creator of the Hellboy universe Mike Mignola took to Twitter to share the first look at David Harbour as the titular character. He posted a picture with the caption, “Holy crap” — which probably means that he likes what he sees. Lionsgate has announced a January 11, 2019 release date for Hellboy.

HAWAII FIVE-O's Daniel Dae Kim to Replace Ed Skrein in HELLBOY Reboot

5bGWgVR.jpg

Daniel Dae Kim, who recently left CBS’ Hawaii Five-0, is in negotiations to join the cast of Lionsgate and Millennium’s Hellboy reboot.

Kim will step into the role recently left vacant by Ed Skrein after an outcry over whitewashing a Asian-American character.

Kim will play Major Ben Daimio, a rugged military member of the bureau for paranormal research and defense who, due to a supernatural encounter, can turn into a jaguar when angered or in pain. The character is Japanese-American in the Hellboy comics by creator Mike Mignola.

Skrein had nabbed the role in August but, after a social media protest, made the unprecedented move to step down later that month.

Kim is Korean-American. And the actor is no stranger to standing up for his beliefs. In June, Kim quit Hawaii Five-0 after a salary dispute with CBS; he had been seeking equal pay to the show’s stars, Alex O'Loughlin and Scott Caan. His quitting, along with co-star Grace Park, left the show temporarily without Asian regulars.

Kim has been acting since the early 1990s and appeared on shows such as ER and Angel. He became a known quantity and star thanks to his breakout work on ABC’s Lost, and co-starred on Five-O since it launched in 2010.

The folks over at Omega Underground spotted production details about Hellboy over at My Entertainment World. The latter site updated its film schedule to include Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen despite the reboot having dropped the subtitle.

According to My Entertainment World, Hellboy is expected to start filming in mid-September. The movie will shoot in both the United Kingdom as well as Bulgaria. The site lists the film as being a mix between action, adventure, and sci-fi fantasy. And, if you look at the film’s new synopsis, you will see why.

The production information included a short synopsis for Hellboy, and you can read up on it below:

“The film is about Hellboy going to England, where he must defeat Nimue, Merlin’s consort and the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.”

David Harbour has been cast to play Hellboy while Milla Jovovich signed on to bring Nimue to life. Hellboy has also tapped Ian McShane to play Trevor Bruttenholm, the adoptive father of Hellboy. The leads will be joined by Penelope Mitchell as the Hemlock Grove actress was recently brought on to play a witch. The Hellboy reboot is currently slated to hit theaters in 2018.

HEMLOCK GROVE's Penelope Mitchell Joins HELLBOY Reboot as Ganeida

ZbvroKi.jpg

Penelope Mitchell has joined the Neil Marshall-directed reboot Hellboy: Rise Of The Blood Queen from Lionsgate and Millennium Films. The film was written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, and Aron Coleite.

David Harbour stars as Hellboy who, along with his team of paranormal researchers, try to save the world from a medieval sorceress who wants to destroy humankind. Mitchell will play the role of Ganeida, an elder witch who has decided that Nimue’s wrath has gone on for too long and must be stopped.

The announcement of Mitchell’s casting comes shortly after actor Ed Skrein, who was initially cast in the movie as a Japanese character, made headlines for exiting the project following criticism of whitewashing.

Mitchell is known for her work in the films The Fear of Darkness and The Waiting Game, as well as the TV series Hemlock Grove and The Vampire Diaries. Mitchel was recently cast in Between Worlds opposite Nicolas Cage and previously appeared in producer Darren Aronofsky’s Zipper and the Blumhouse film Curve.

Ed Skrein Exits HELLBOY Reboot After Whitewashing Outcry

kgPv0ZI.jpg

Ed Skrein is leaving the Hellboy reboot after an outcry over his casting.

Skrein, who is known for playing the villain in last year's Deadpool, joined the cast of the Hellboy reboot last week, and he was to play rugged military member Major Ben Daimio, who in the comic books is Asian.

Some on social media objected to the casting, calling it another example of Hollywood whitewashing a character. And after a mounting outcry, he has decided to leave the project, sharing the news on Twitter Monday.

"It is clear that representing this character in a culturally accurate way holds significance for people, and that to neglect this responsibility would continue a worrying tendency to obscure ethnic minority stories and voice in the Arts. I feel it is important to honour and respect that. There I have decided to step down so the role can be cast appropriately," the actor wrote in a statement. "Representation of ethnic diversity is important, especially to me as I have a mixed heritage family. It is our responsibility to make more decisions in difficult times and to give voice to inclusivity. It is my hope that one day these discussions will become less necessary and that we can help make equal representation in the Arts a reality."

Conversations about whitewashing have come to the forefront over the past year after examples such as Ghost in the Shell and Doctor Strange cast white actors as characters who were Asian in the source material, but this is the first time an actor has exited such a high-profile project in response to a public criticism. Skrein swiftly began getting praise online after making his announcement.

Stranger Things' David Harbour is starring in the Hellboy reboot, which is based on the the demonic hero from comic book creator Mike Mignola. Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall is helming the project. Ian McShane is playing hero’s adoptive father, while Milla Jovovich is playing a medieval sorceress who wants to destroy humanity.

Producers Larry Gordon, Lloyd Levin, Millennium and Lionsgate also released a statement Monday in support of Skrein's decision: "Ed came to us and felt very strongly about this. We fully support his unselfish decision. It was not our intent to be insensitive to issues of authenticity and ethnicity, and we will look to recast the part with an actor more consistent with the character in the source material."

The project is heading toward a September start and will shoot in the U.K. and Bulgaria.

Skrein played the villain Ajax in Deadpool, the 2016 Ryan Reynolds hit that made $783 million worldwide. The Britain-born actor also headlined 2015’s The Transporter Refueled and will be seen in Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, due in theaters in summer 2018.

AMERICAN HONEY Star Sasha Lane Cast as Alice Monaghan in HELLBOY

7Kp8U7c.jpg

American Honey's breakout star Sasha Lane is in final negotiations to join the Hellboy reboot.

Lionsgate and Millennium’s project will star David Harbour as the demonic hero from the Mike Mignola comic books. Neil Marshall, the horror director who broke out with The Descent and won raves for his work on Game of Thrones, is on board to helm.

The new story sees the hero squaring off against a medieval sorceress who seeks to destroy humankind. Lane would play Alice Monaghan. In the comic books, Hellboy rescues Alice from the fairies that kidnapped her. She retains some supernatural gifts because of her time with the fairies.

Later on in the continuity of the series, however, Monaghan appeared again as a grown woman where the two are brought together by fate and thanks to her connection to the fairy world. The pair grow close as well, falling in love as they travel the country side together.

Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane also are attached to star.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing along with Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment. The project is eyeing a September shoot.

After her breakout performance in Andrea Arnold’s American Honey, Lane lined up a slew of projects that reflect her status as one of the indie world’s most in-demand actresses. She’s already shot Miseducation of Cameron Post with Chloe Moretz and Shotgun with Maika Monroe. She’s attached to Shoplifters of the World with Joe Manganiello and the sci-fi project Hunting Lila. Hellboy will be her first major studio project.

Milla Jovovich to Play the Blood Queen in Neil Marshall's HELLBOY Reboot

56HjH8Z.jpg

Director Neil Marshall has found his Blood Queen. Milla Jovovich is in final talks to join the Marshall-directed reboot of Hellboy, sources said. The plan is for her to join Stranger Things‘ David Harbour (playing the red-skinned creature originated by Ron Perlman in the Guillermo del Toro films), and Ian McShane, who’s also set to play Professor Broom.

Aron Coleite is working on the latest draft of a script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson are the producers. Millennium Films and Lionsgate are making the film.

Jovovich is no stranger to the sci-fi action genre, but she has almost exclusively worn the white hat in the Resident Evil films, The Fifth Element and Ultraviolet.

Marshall is now focusing on the reboot after coming off directing the pilot episode of Lost In Space for Netflix, with his producing partner Marc Helwig, who’s an executive producer of Hellboy. Based on the raw visual sensibilities he has shown in the films The Descent, Centurion and Dog Soldiers as well as several memorable Game of Thrones episodes, Marshall has the chops for this R-rated film.

HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN Was Originally Tied to Guillermo del Toro Movies

5ZLi90k.jpg

When Mike Mignola announced the new Hellboy film, he confirmed that the series was being rebooted by naming Stranger Things star David Harbour as the new Hellboy. However, this wasn't always the case.

Speaking to Nerdist, Mignola revealed that they came up with an idea to continue del Torro's story, but the director wasn't a fan. “I would’ve loved to see Guillermo do his third movie and finish that story," he explained. "But over the years it became very clear that wasn’t going to happen. About three years ago the producers, the screenwriter Andrew Cosby, and I all started working on this new story. Del Toro didn’t want to have anything to do with it, he wasn’t going to direct. He was offered to be a producer, and Ron [Perlman] wouldn’t do it without Guillermo.”

With del Torro out, Mignola and company came to an epiphany. "So we originally started trying to tie it to the del Toro universe and continue those movies," he continued. "But once we had Neil Marshall, we thought, ‘Why are we going to try and continue that universe?’ Because a del Toro movie is a del Toro movie, and you don’t want to try and hand a del Toro movie to someone else. Especially someone as great as Neil Marshall. So that’s when it went from being this continuation to being a reboot. It’s exciting to have another director. It’s exciting to take another path, to take that material and give it another leaning.”

Lionsgate in Talks to Pick Up HELLBOY: RISE OF THE BLOOD QUEEN

gRxWf5J.jpg

The Hellboy reboot that will star Stranger Things’ David Harbour as the title character may have found a home.

Lionsgate is in final negotiations to pick up the project, which is titled Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and has Neil Marshall on board to direct, THR has confirmed. Splash Report first reported the news.

Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are producing, as is Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment.

Hellboy is a unique franchise in that so far each installment has been released by a different studio. Adapting the works of comic creator Mike Mignola, the first movie was made by Revolution Studios and released by Sony in 2004. The sequel, Hellboy: The Golden Army, was made by Universal and released in 2008.

Both movies were directed by Guillermo del Toro and starred Ron Perlman as a demon raised by a kind, and human, professor, working to fight supernatural evildoers for an organization called Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Del Toro and Perlman tried to launch a third installment, but budgetary issues proved to be challenging and the producers decided to instead venture forward with a reboot. Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is eyeing a fall shoot.

Neil Marshall Says His HELLBOY Will Be Bloody, R-Rated and Light on CGI

Neil Marshall recently appeared on the Post Mortem podcast, where he spilled some details about what fans can expect from the Hellboy reboot.

Considering the storylines involve demons and monsters, Marshall revealed he aims to lean into the dark subject matter and adult-oriented content, explaining, "We’ve been granted permission to do it R-rated, which for me is just like taking the cuffs off. It’s like, okay, so now we can just make the movie we want to make."

This doesn't mean he will arbitrarily make the film graphic, however, as he pointed out, "It’s not like I’m going to force it to be R-rated, but if it happens to come out that way, just because of my own sensibilities, then fine. And nobody’s going to stop us. So, that’s the main [difference]. And I’m sure, obviously, the success of things like Deadpool and Logan have not hurt that cause. But, also, when you go back the original material, it is kind of bloody, so I’m going to embrace that."

"It’s definitely going to be as practical as we can possibly make it," Marshall confessed. "I love to do stuff in camera whenever I possibly can, and use CG as the amazing tool that it is, to enhance or expand upon the world, but not to use it to replace reality, when you can do it [for] real.”

HELLBOY Reboot Screenwriter Teases Darker, More Brutal Horror Film

WRyDHfj.jpg

News broke out yesterday that the Hellboy was getting an R-rated reboot, and now, the writer of the Hellboy reboot is giving fans a clue about what to expect. In an interview with Silver Screen Beat, Andrew Cosby shared a few details about Hellboy’s tone and direction.

“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy,” Cosby started.

“Neil [Marshall] said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”

“Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen,” Cosby finished. “The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”

R-Rated HELLBOY Reboot with Director Neil Marshall and David Harbour to Star

KrBrpcl.jpg

Hellboy, the demonic comic book hero-turned- Guillermo del Toro film franchise, is poised to return to the big-screen, this time without the filmmaker at the helm.

Millennium is in negotiations with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin for a new installment that would reboot and relaunch the property. Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment is also producing.

Neil Marshall, the horror director who broke out with The Descent and won raves for his work on Game of Thrones, is in talks to direct the project, which has a working title of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen and has a script by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

Del Toro is not involved nor is Ron Perlman, the actor who inhabited the red-skinned cigar-chomping devil in the two previous installments.

Rather, David Harbour, the Stranger Things star, is in talks play Hellboy.

Creator Mike Mignola announced on Facebook that the Hellboy reboot will be R-rated.

If a deal makes, Millennium would become the third company to make a Hellboy movie in as many releases.

Hellboy was created in 1993 by Mignola and became an indie comic hit as it told of a demon raised by a professor, working to fight supernatural evildoers for an organization called Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense.

Last year del Toro, Dark Horse Entertainment, Levin and Gordon, the latter who controls the rights, explored their options. However, the budget was a stumbling block, with del Toro wanting a bigger canvas for his vision. In the end, the producers decided a reboot and relaunch was the more feasible route.

Comments: Since Guillermo del Toro tried numerous times and unsuccessfully to make Hellboy 3, even declaring that the sequel is 100% not going to happen early this year, I'm fine with a reboot. Better to have a new series of Hellboy movies than nothing at all.

As for David Harbour casting, I think he's a terrific choice as Hellboy. He checks out in all the physical criteria. He's 6'3", a bit thick and 42 years old which is a great age to build a franchise on for many, many years (FYI Ron Perlman is 67 this year). He also has the gruffness, the voice and the attitude for the role.

was just about to post this then boom.

No Del Toro. No Pearlman. No interest.

Stoked for the film but sad the main players won't be returning.

Even less so, since it's a reboot of a cult classic with no one from the previous movies involved. Should've just thrown money at a new idea.
