Hearts of Iron IV: World War II Grand Strategy (UPDATE March 2018 - New DLC)

Played last night. Drag & Drop/collapsable production lines are a gift from Heaven (ability to add 150 factories per line is also awesome).

Game is very different. Definitely starting to feel more like EU as far as "lol how does all of this work?" goes. I'm glad I'm getting introduced to the extra complexity after getting a good understanding of the original complexity. Coming into the game now would be pretty difficult.

This is in the humble bundle this month so you can get it plus two other games for just $12.

Been playing the Old War Blues Fallout mod, wow it's incredible.

Picked up the expansions through the Summer Sale. Tempted to get back in action. Have a couple other games I need to finish and if I have time I might try to get another playthrough going. Such a great game and I still get the itch from time to time. I need to do an ironman playthrough but I need to put all my energy and focus into that and don't have the time right now.

Part of me is tempted to do the CK, EU, Victoria, HOI crucible but man that seems hard core.

This game is so good with all the mods out now.

Kaiserreich, Old World Blues, Millennium Dawn, Road to 56.

Can play this game for months and not get bored.

Playing a USA game today. Wanted to start it on Wednesday but didn’t get a chance. Rushing medium tanks; trying to have army ready by 1940 with all armor/armored infantry.

Millennium Dawn is really good. When I first started up the US and got the Elian Gonzalez popup I lold.

La Resistance came out yesterday. Just installed; I'm excited for this one. Spain is my favorite country to play, and them getting a proper focus tree is fantastic.

I still haven't played a single game as Germany. There's something in my red American blood that just won't let it happen.

Tried playing this series. I love Europa Universalis, but Hearts of Iron is just too complicated for me. Played Brazil for a bit back in the first game, but as I recall I could never quite figure out the mechanics for politics or trade/resource management. Nowadays I think I lack the time or inclination to give it another try, especially considering they seem to have ramped up the complexity further. Shame, as this game has a lot going for it.

I've heard there is no timecap in IV (you can continue playing after 1948) which is a big improvement at least. No fun playing as a smaller nation like Sweden or Brazil, and not being able to conquer the world.

Starting playing this game and I love the effort they put into getting the history right.

So uhhh as a newbie to this game (I actually don't even own it yet), how does one go about learning the game mechanics and easing into this really complex system?

What fdswer said. It's a dry game, visually, but the details/strategic options are insane. It has a steep learning curve, but with youtube having so much HOI content, you're better off than I was back then.

I haven't played since HOI2, I'm kind of afraid to jump back in, you can lose your life in this. Seeing this thread bumped made me think there was a new DLC, or HOI5 had a trailer.

What's the mod scene like for this? Winter is a slower time for me, and with Company of Heroes 3 coming, I'll want more strategic WW2 options to complement the action in that. It was COH1 that got me into the HOI franchise.

There are a lot of good overhaul mods for HOI 4, check out the steam workshop.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=719416488 Millennium Dawn is a modern day conversion

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1521695605 Kaiserreich is a alt history mod where the central powers win ww1, very story focused so you are kinda pushed to play one way but really fun.

Been meaning to buy this as I keep getting notifications that it's on sale. Is HOI5 supposed to come out any time soon..or at all?

No, they are in the process of releasing an update for the Italy campaign/focus tree. This game is definitely not finished so if they do put out a new game it will be annoying.

The HOI franchise was fun. I never tried 4, but I tried the earlier ones. Paradox makes interesting games, but I don't understand all of the mechanics. HOI is one of their only games that I feel like I understand everything and can win. I like Europa Universalis, but I don't understand how to win. Stellaris I understand, but the late game is too hard, and I just quit after a horde comes, or whatever. I might buy HOI4, if it goes on sale cheap. As complicated as HOI is, there are more complicated war games.

The Blood-Alone DLC is both good and bad.

This game is already too complicated, has some extreme lag issues in the late game and is just generally pretty glitchy. This DLC fixes nothing and adds new problems.

But the Italy focus tree is way way better. Playing as Italy is actually fun now.

The treaty screen is still broken and terrible - this DLC made it worse. The airforce stuff was already too complicated and they made it fully customizable and a lot harder to make planes/understand the airforce mechanics of the game.

They corrected no issues, added some more, and made Italy playable. The KaserDux alternate history mod is still better than the vanilla game.
