Has a Fighter Who Didn't Know English Ever Been Penalized Because He Couldn't Understand the Ref?

In the first fight of UFC Hamburg, the ref was telling Liu Pingyuan not to hit the back of the head. I don't know if Liu speaks English or not, but some UFC fighters do not, obviously. So what happens when the ref warns the fighter, but the fighter doesn't understand, then gets penalized? Is that fair? Have you ever heard of this happening?

Romero lost a fight in fans eyes because he was talking about gay jesus

Matt Hamill "beat" Jones because he couldn't hear the idiot ref asking if he could keep fighting

100% fair. You're fighting for an American company on an international fight card. There're established rules for communication, for example, all pilots/air traffic control personnels on international flights must speak English. If you want to publish hair loss articles in internationally recognized medical journals, you must submit the article written in English. It is your responsibility as a fighter on international fight cards to be able to follow a ref's instructions in English.

Great answer. Thanks.

Tim Kennedy got KTFO because Romero's team couldn't speak English.

What was the idiot ref supposed to do? Learn sign language for this particular fight?

You'd be shocked at how low a level of English is actually required from pilots. Unless you've tried flying at an airport in British Columbia that has a flight school.

I agree with your post though - they know they have to speak enough English to understand the ref, it's not like this is just sprung on them as they enter the cage.

paul harris breaking peoples legs then pointing to his ear and shaking his head "me no understand". classic

Agree. I've met a few SA pilots that fly exclusively continentals and/or southern trans-Atlantics to Africa, and their English is ChuteBox towel-boy level. They can speak 5 languages, but their English is shit, followed by their French.

Many sports would do this. For instance, in judo all of the referee commands are in Japanese. You definitely don't need to speak Japanese to compete in judo. You just need to understand a few words and the hand signals that go along with them.

My McDojo Taekwondo was the same - you were expected to learn enough Korean to know when to stand at attention, when to start and stop a sparring match, how to count, etc. Fluency wasn't required or expected, but enough knowledge to participate was.

I was fighting with a Taco Bell employee the other day. Couldn't understand Taco Supreme... SMH

Maybe not rely strictly on verbal communication with a deaf guy...

* ask Matt's corner.

* take a fucking minute to think it over. it was a foul, he had no reason to rush.
he could have given Matt time to recover and dealt with the communication barrier then.

Phil "Pocket Guido" Baroni lost to Evan Tanner the first time because he couldn't speak Standart American English in an intelligible manner. Larry Landless could
n't get shit of what Phil was babbling.

Or, you know Jones could have not cheated. Although we know he has a problem with that.
