Watching some of GSP's old fights.. just wondering why he was ever popular? The majority of his fights go to decisions (all of his last 7 fights went to decision), he got beaten by a midget Matt Serra and he doesn't know how to trash talk. Why did people ever like the guy? Was it just because he was Canadian?

He wasn't. His biggest draw was Brock Lesnar destroying Mir.

As for pre Serra 1, he wasn't drawing shit until 100 when Brock gave him the rub.

He was consistently over 700 thousand buys. Diaz fight did 950. Penn rematch was the same.. PPV these days without Conor or Jones is like 250.. And Jones will be long gone soon.

Watch him vs Hughes 2 and 3, against BJ part 2 and then watch his fight vs Frank Trigg to start with.

He had a country backing him I guess.

he was a big draw for canadian audiences but even with that, he's not that much of a draw outside Canada.

Canada baby

Canadians are not criminals Who stream fight illegaly.

He was not that boring. And people like watching greatness. Once you get a few defenses people will watch you no matter what, unless you're MM

He isn't the PPV king though, which is the statement being made.

because he won a lot and isn't a dwarf that weighs 125 pounds

That's how the UFC is marketing him as. He was supposedly the PPV king before McGregor that's the whole basis/angle that they're going to use if he fights Conor.

Because he kept winning? He seemed to have this odd knack for winning... people seemed to like that for some reason?

join date checks out

Been saying this since the fight was announced. The GSP hype is lost on Sherdog.

It would be interesting to know the actual percentage of Sherdoggers that were into mma when GSP first came up. It's probably about 50% that were even around when he retired. But how many were around for Parisyan, Hieron and Hughes 1 in 2004?

GSP brings an aura to the fight that you can't even really explain, even if you were there and remember it.

Context.

Consider the climate at the time.

He kept fooling them with sayings like "don't blink" and they ate it up.

I'm really not sure but he was considered badass perfection for a good time before he became boring ass avoidance.

Times and audiences change maybe? Not sure really.

Well I don't personally think he was boring but it can easily argued that from a casual standpoint he was. He was too technical and didn't like like to brawl a lot. Basically Canadian WW version of Mighty Mouse.
